A fully renovated 15th century three-storey half-timbered stone house on the rue du Petit Fort, the cobbled street leading from the old port of Dinan to the town centre. As you climb up the ancient street and through one of the gate towers, you find yourself on the famous Rue de Jerzual, with its delightful creperies and art and craft shops, leading to the old town. Although the street is traffic free, apart from residents’ cars, you are allowed to load and unload, then park your car in a nearby parking lot for which we provide a pass.
This beautiful 15th century merchant`s house is situated just 75 yards back from the ancient river port of Dinan on the Rue du Petit Fort. It has a wealth of oak beams and exposed stone walls, including a magnificent open fire place and some lovely pieces of antique French furniture. Every room has an electric heater; you can also have a roaring log fire in the winter.
The accommodation is arranged on three floors and sleeps up to 8 people plus baby, so it is perfect for 2 families. Entering the house from the street reveals a cosy, oak beamed sitting room featuring an open stone fireplace and plenty of comfortable seating, a table, chairs, a T.V. which has some English channels, a sound system and a DVD player. Through a low doorway is the well equipped kitchen, including a dishwasher, microwave, a large fridge-freezer and a table and chairs. A doorway leads outside to an enclosed pretty terraced garden with patio furniture and barbecue.
A winding oak staircase takes you to the first floor where there are two huge double bedrooms, one having a door leading to the garden. There is a bath/shower room with toilet and washer and tumble dryer on this floor. Another staircase leads to the second floor and to two charming twin attic bedrooms, with a second bathroom with loo and shower between them. These are wonderfully cosy rooms, having the low `A` frame of the roof clad in pine and running the depth of the house so there`s plenty of space for 4/5 children to sleep and play. A cot, put-u-up and highchair are available if needed.
we are back in the us, but wanted to send along our thanks for your wonderful house in dinan. the entire 8 of us were enthralled with it and some have asked if there is any site that would accept favorable comments for your future rental.
Wonderful historic property in a fantastic location. Clean, well equipped and maintained. Short walk to the riverside port and to the town.
Not suitable if you are not all that mobile as it is on a steep cobbled street but otherwise perfect.
There is a parking permit for one car at a nearby public car park. Otherwise plenty of free parking about 200m along the quay.
A great experience.
We had the pleasure to rent this house for 6 weeks in Sept/Oct of 2013. This is by far the cleanest, best kept home we have ever rented in all our years of long term stays in France.
This is not just a rental home, it is the personal home of the owners and it shows. Fantastic and fully stocked kitchen, comfy furniture and all the small things that make a house a home. We felt more like we were watching a home for friends than merely renting a house. The owners, as well as the property manager are perfectly charming and friendly folks who went out of their way to make our stay memorable.
The outdoor spaces were our evening gathering places, many dinners, many drinks and much laughter and music was heard for all 6 weeks.
When we return to Dinan in the future, we will absolutely rent this charming house again. No doubts at all in our minds.
One or two things to consider...
The hill up to the old part of Dinan is formidable. Take good walking shoes. You will need to go up, as there are no grocery or atm available in the port.
One of the bedrooms on the top floor is much smaller than the others, but we just ended up storing luggage in different rooms while people were in the small room. While it is small, no one had any complaints at all!
As I said in my review title, this is the best we have ever rented. If you are very, very lucky, you too can stay in this gem.
We truly enjoyed having the opportunity to stay in this unique and comfortable house. Besides being beautifully appointed, the house was clearly set up to be "lived in." We loved the kitchen--with all of its useful gadgets and glassware. The location of the house, near the port and at the base of the town, made it a perfect spot for exploring the trails along the canal and the nooks and markets of the town, as well as finding tasty meals and treats (always key for our family). Besides the living quarters, the outdoor spaces (yes there are a few), with their lovely flowers and seating areas, made it the perfect place to enjoy games of cribbage, along with some local ciders and calvados (though not all of us enjoyed the calvados). The owners were attentive to our questions and needs. It is clear they take great joy in providing their guests with a wonderful experience. Were we to visit Dinan again, we would most definitely make The Merchant's House our home away from home.
The vacation home was everything depicted in the photos and narrative and more. Quaint, clean and homey. We were 2 couples in our early 60s who are not inclined to prepare our dinner meals, but for anyone who is, the kitchen is well-equipped for ablest of cooks.
We chose to occupy the 3rd floor room with twin beds ... so that both couples could enjoy the privacy of our own full baths.
It would be perfect for a large or small family vacation. I would not recommend it to anyone who isn't able to climb stairs easily.
My favorite restaurant was the La Lumachelle just a few doors down on the right. Order the poisson du marche... you will not be disappointed.
The house was every bit as good as we had expected on the basis of the information provided in the internet ad. It is stunningly beautiful, spacious, peaceful and ideally located for exploring the unique town of Dinan. On our arrival, it was scrupulously clean and the arrangements for picking up the key, availing ourselves of the car-parking permit etc. were straightforward and simple. In addition, a folder was left for us with loads of practical and simple information for making the most of our stay.
The house is beautifully furnished in keeping with its medieval character. It is also the best equipped house we have ever stayed in. The kitchen had everything you would ever need and it was a pleasure to cook our family meal in the evening.
I will certainly recommend the house to friends and relatives. It represented outstanding value for money to us, and it is very refreshing to come home with the sensation that the owners put so much effort into into providing top quality accommodation rather than just being interested in maximising their own return - as, unfortunately, has sometimes been the case in other properties we have rented.
