Departure Bay Beach~ Luxury B&B on the ocean with breakfast~ 3 steps to the Sea
About Taaja Kayler
I love to cook and entertain. Several years ago the city of Vancouver called upon the locals to help out with accommodations for a huge conference in the city. Here was my opportunity to use my talents. I enjoyed many guests from all over the world and did more than was expected as I got to use my creative cooking talents. I ended up getting referrals long after the conference was over and continued on for the entire summer. It was fun. As a former stewardess; a model of over 30 years and runway confidence coach I taught women: the walk, the look and how to own the room. That was a great experience of turning my profession into a workshop where women could allow their beautiful spirit out. 6 years of workshops culminated when I followed a whim. On a whim, I found myself standing in a stunning beach house on Departure Bay, Nanaimo that was for sale at the time. We bought the house and I set sail from West Vancouver with my husband and am now vacation rental owner and operator of Randle House By The Sea. An unexpected dream come true! My absolute love of cooking now offers my guests to taste some inspired breakfast alternatives and some updated oldies but goldies like me!
Taaja Kayler purchased this House in 2014
Why Taaja Kayler chose Departure Bay
Randle House By The Sea is beautifully situated in the heart of Departure Bay where you can see something interesting all day, every day. It is the only block in Departure Bay and Nanaimo that has immediate waterfront. I once swam 5 miles non stop, so my husband started looking for a place where I could swim. We didn't downsize, but upsized to our wonderful home where I could create something beautiful...a resort like setting. We traveled to the Island on and off for many years while our children were growing up. Coombs was one of our destinations to see the goats on the roof and enjoy their many flavoured ice cream cones. There is still no end to where we will go next on this fabulous island. One of its fascinating treasures is watching the beautiful BC ferries come and go, a relaxing sight. We call them "floating cupcakes". Another fascinating bird I love to watch is the Buffle Head, I call them "pop ups". They just pop up out of the water and then disappear and pop up again. Today I found a colorful dried star fish attached to a sea shell and that was my gift from the sea. Our private courtyard is full of flowering bushes, trees, azaleas and rhododendrons. Another peaceful option where you can settle into a garden bench and read your favorite book under the shade of a Japanese Maple. I have traveled extensively with my husband and family, but this is where I love to be most, my own beachfront yard here in Nanaimo relaxing to the waves, the scent of the sea, and a peaceful sleep.
What makes this House unique
I fell in love with this home the moment I saw it and there was no turning back after I opened the front door and was stunned by the incredible view of the sea from the enormous grand room window. The entire house was one surprise room after another. The ivy arbor was a dream to walk through and all was surrounded by pink flowers. I loved to walk out the door, 3 steps down and into the ocean for a swim. The outdoor shower fascinated me as well. There was so much potential to create a B&B and now I can nourish others living in this beautiful house and the guests can enjoy coffee/tea in the morning from their Adirondack chair watching always something interesting on the sea. You can watch the early golden sunrise in the morning, and in the evening enjoy the sunset over Newcastle Island. Rent a kayak and take lessons for a day, snorkel around the Bay. Neck Point Park has some of the finest scuba diving and snorkeling in the world, beautifully clear and clean water. I learned today that Nanaimo has been rated for divers, and is among the best diving in North America. Either alone or with a loved one or partner, you can enjoy the calm nightlife, stroll the beach, and collect shells. The otters, seals, eagles, the occasional Orca or grey whales and deer, frequent this area. This is an awesome place to live. The Nanaimo people are very friendly and soon you are on a first name basis. There is so much to explore on this Island and our B&B on the Beach is a good place to start. Hope to see you soon, Happy Travels!

10 STARS in Every Catagory!!!
Randle House By The Sea is by far the best B&B you will find in Nanaimo, Vancouver Island!! It rates 10 stars in every category: hospitality, breakfast, location, comfort, price. We spent five nights in Taaja's and Ken's beautiful home on Departure Bay. We were welcomed like good friends the moment we arrived at the door. The setting is gorgeous, which made it difficult to leave and explore the island each day. Taaja's delicious breakfasts were skillfully prepared and adorned with various herbs and eatable flowers from her garden. Our room was a sanctuary. The morning sunrises were spectacular everyday! We enjoyed having coffee each daybreak on the balcony overlooking the glassy bay before our day began. It was quite serene. The linens and bed were of high quality, also. In addition to a top notch B&B, Taaja and Ken were genuinely warm and hospitable, making us feel like friends rather than customers. Taaja called a friend and arranged a catamaran tour for us and Ken was extremely helpful in giving us tips on what sights to see and which restaurants were good. Nanaimo was a perfect location because we could take day trips to explore other parts of the island. Our entire stay on Vancouver Island was exceptional because of Taaja and Ken, and because we chose Randle House By The Sea as our B&B. Taaja and Ken went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful and memorable. THANK YOU Taaja and Ken!!!
We so enjoyed having you every one of those 4 days. And yes, guests often become friends. You made our summer time feel like we were guests at our own resort. It often feels like that. We are always happy when our guests are happy. It makes our work fun. We did share a late evening dinner with candles, ocean waves and lots of laughter. Now special friends, do come back anytime.....we will be waiting.
We would recommend this B&B to everyone. Our hosts, Taija and Ken were wonderful. The room overlooked Departure Bay with the ferries coming and going and the geese, and other sea life were fascinating to watch. Breakfast everyday was unique and amazingly delicious. We actually hated to leave and would go back again for sure.
Thank you for taking the time to write us a thoughtful review. You are lovely guests. We are finding more and more that our guests are like friends coming for a visit. It's wonderful. Hope to see you again.
Gracious hosts, beautiful setting
We couldn't have asked for a better experience. The Audrey room has a stunning view, the house and grounds are charming, and hosts Taaja and Ken were a delight. Our breakfast was delicious and Taaja was very accommodating of our food preferences. She also provided a wealth of information on the area. I'd recommend a stay at the Randle House for anyone looking to visit the Nanaimo area. Top shelf!
Very nice home and great hosts. They werevery helpful helping find points of interest to me.
Loved exploring the parks and trails of B.C.
East coas. Neck park in Nanaimo and English Man Falls / Park were especially nice.
Great B&B Right on the Bay
We had a great stay. Wonderful property, great hosts, central location. Taaja created some wonderful breakfasts, and we'll likely use the ideas next time we are hosting family at our place. We were able to eat outside every day except one - the weather was wonderful during our weekend getaway. While here, we saw seals, various sea birds and eagles, and even a family of deer walking down the beach! The B&B was handy to the city and many local attractions - being our first visit to Nanaimo we tried to take it all in. Ken's recommended locations were great, and we found a couple of our own. Be sure to check out Neck Point Park, Cathedral Grove, Cuckoo's, Bamboozle, Qualicum Beach Farmer's Market (Saturdays), Courtyard Cafe, Mon Petit Chou (unbelievable Nanaimo Bars), Dinghy Dock Pub, Troller's, and Crow & Gate Pub.
This was a wonderful place to stay while preparing for and on my wedding day. Taaja was a very nice host.
We were married on August 12th and found that it was a great experience and wonderful place to return to. Well-kept and a beautiful balcony overlooks the harbor. We would love to come back and spend more time.
My first groom for the wedding planned across the bay on New Castle Island. Everything close at hand. Ferry terminal, everything. Well planned. Loved having you and being of service. Would be very happy to have you and Tamara back any time. Blessings,
Hoping to plan a wedding page on my new website with my first bride and groom in the near future.
A must go-to for those that like to hike - Neck Point Park and Piper's Lagoon, 5 minutes from Randle House. Nanaimo Harbour Seawall leading to fishermen's dock, floating restaurant - Penny's Palapa, small ferries to Newcastle Island (no cars on Island), swim, easy hike around the entire area.. Perhaps see some white racoons. The Dinghy Dock Pub you can reach by a small ferry for lunch or dinner and enjoy Friday nights entertainment. Our beautiful home with your private room will become your oasis from the busy world. The setting is idyllic as it provides the best of both worlds. Minutes to down town shops, restaurants and parks. Make this your home away from home.
Take a 20 minute ferry ride to Gabriola Island and walk through nature's spectacular Malaspina Galleries.
For a fabulous outing for the ladies, join the frequent outings to Bamboozle and House of Leaves, set in the forest, for what I call a Shopping Convoy. Then off to Coombs (Goats on the Roof), for lunch at Cuckoos and meander throughout the small intimate shops in this popular area.
Explore Cedar and the wonderful Farmers Market near the Crow and Gate, an amazing old English Pub where you can stroll the grounds in the summer or eat inside with two roaring fire places. Loved by all. In November and December there are many Christmas Craft fairs in Nanaimo area. There are markers at the side of the street so you can follow your map to over 25 locations all within the area of Cedar. Have dinner at the Famous Mahle House, a short drive from the city.
There is so much to explore that we have only begun to take in the many treasures on land and sea. This is where you can come to relax and find yourself coming back again and again. Many of our guests want to move here after their visit! So happy we did!
