Guestbook comments from the manager

we are all looking forward to returning to Gialla Casciana next summer for our 3rd visit....says it all !!

The property is in a lovely location overlooking the village of Piazza al Serchio, about a 10 minute walk away downhill, but 20 minutes back, uphill, great Bakers there, and Bodega for the puchase of local wine. The cake shop on the edge of town is something else, and basics are available from the 2 supermarkets.

Plenty of local eating places all very resonably priced.

This is an excellent property for a holiday with rustic old world charm, with adequate facilities.

Large grounds surround the property with the bonus of the owners large vegetable patch, and in season you may be provided with produce from here, and from the fruit trees in the grounds.

A great feaure is the large open sided covered area adjoining the house which is good for eating/playing out of the sunshine and there is a BBQ for use here.

Large swimming pool, same depth throughout (5 feet) in the raised area adjoining the house and plenty of garden furniture in the surrounding paved/decked area.

Property is ideal for children as it is completely enclosed, and a great spot for an off the world holiday......no neighbours, small bar in the village up the hill 10 mins walk away, with fabulous views.

Idyllic setting

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week at this villa after a hectic few days in Pisa, Florence and Lucca and the peace and tranquility in comparison was wonderful. There was some confusion upon arrival which Lorraine and the owner were very quick to sort out.

We walked up the hill to the bar in Casciana which was only about ½ a mile away, and the owners Maria and Franco made us feel very welcome, even though they couldn't speak a word of English, in fact they made us a lovely home-made meal on 2 x occasions without the need for a menu !! All the locals here were very friendly.

We also ventured downhill to Piazza Al Serchio for the local market on Tuesday morning (about 1.2 miles) and bought some of the delicious chicken and chips which was very satisfying after the hot climb back. We ate at a few of the restaurants here over the week, most of which only seemed to do pizza.

We had a few trips out to local villages which had magnificent views, particularly San Romano and the fort at Verrucole, Barga and the Chiesa at Gramolazzo which is quite difficult to find.

All in all a brilliant week.

Quiet and secluded

  • 4 of 5

The villa is nestled on a very quite road that brings great privacy and fabulous night skies. The villa was spacious and had the essentials. You do need a car to benefit most from visiting the surrounding sights and doing the shopping due to its remoteness and hilliness! We walked into Piazza Al Serchio a few times and had a good value and tasty meal at the pizzeria, we also got the train to Lucca for a day out which was very straight forward with a regular service.

We have been to the area before and it is very pretty and everyone was friendly.

Was a great break away reading, eating and sleeping!

Nice house with lots of privacy

  • 5 of 5

Paolo was very helpful showing us the way to the house and inviting us to use vegetables from the garden behind the house.

The house is very nice, completely equipped (dishwasher, washing machine etc.), spacious and very clean.

It is on a quiet road; especially on the backside you have lots of privacy.

The pool is great and there is a lot of space for children to play.

The only disadvantage we could think of, is that there are no shops or restaurants nearby; you always need to go by car.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. Great to hear you enjoyed the house, the area and the pool and we hope to hear from you another time! NB: Just for future guests, you can walk to a bar/basic shop in village of Casciana, which is 900M away (but it is uphill!). If you like walking then you can walk down to a larger village which is 2.2km away (again it is hilly!) where there are 3 or 4 restaurants, all shops, bars, bank , small Tuesday morning market, train station etc. Lorraine at tuscan-retreats

Perfect

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this house for a full week. It's a lovely house. Everything you could possibly need is there. It is just a lovely area. Nobody bothers you. It's fantastic. We complete unwound there. We felt so relaxed after the week. The local shops are perfect have everything you could possibly need. On our first day it rained but that didn't matter as we sat out under the huge canopy which is huge. We would definitely recommend this place to unwind and chill.

Spacious House in private location

  • 3 of 5

A lovely two weeks spent in this very private house. Although at the side of a road, it was not a problem. Not many cars passed by. The property was well equipped and the owner lived nearby so if there is any problems he is there in a few minutes.

From this property you can walk to a quiet village up the hill (10 mins) there is a bar and a shop. Down the hill to Piazzo Al Serchio, (20/25 mins) a bigger village with restaurants and bars and the Train Station if you wish to travel to other places. We took the train to Lucca. I would recommend this property to friends and relatives. The swimming pool was great and the garden was well kept.

Gialla Casciana

  • 5 of 5

We have had two wonderful weeks in Giall Casciana in June 2013 . The location of the house is rural, quiet – but still close (walking distance) to surrounding villages. Waking up and sitting in the front yard with an espresso and enjoying the sound of the birds, then continue relaxing by the pool and enjoying the views . If you like cherries: you can just pick them from the trees ... how good is that?! :)

We have discovered lots (!) of good restaurants and enjoyed a lot of stunning views whilst exploring the area during our stay . This was our 2nd year in the Garfagnana and we're still not finished exploring , so we will come back again. This is an ideal place to relax quietly and in pricavy but also a good place from where you can discover Garfagnana . The people are very friendly , patient and helpful , the food is delicious and the nature is amazingly beautiful .

The house is very spacious and equipped with everything you need (a hidden gem - especially for that price!) , although we have lived outdoors most of the time, in the garden and by the pool , as the weather has been great !

Many thanks to Lorraine for her help, if we needed anything she was quick to be of help.

Hope to visit again in 2014 !

Map

This house is situated a 15 minute walk (less on the way back, since the area is hilly!) from an ancient village which has a bar and shop, and a 20 min walk (much more on way back!) or less than 5 minute drive from the larger village of Piazza al Serchio with all facilities.

Facilities include, traditional shops; supermarket; small Tuesday morning market when village really comes alive; river; station for easy exploring; bars and some restaurants.

In the depths of the countryside, high in the valley the house is a 1 hr 15 minute drive north of Lucca. The market town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana is a 20 minute or so drive; Barga is 40 minutes.....

The real beauty of this area is the dramatic mountain scenery, and the hundreds of hilltop villages to explore......
