About Peggy Shaughnessy
The ranch has been in our family since 1924. My grandparents, both attorneys, built the Main House as their country home in 1929, completing it just before the great Depression. By the early 1930's, the ranch had evolved into a guest ranch as a place for their friends, movie stars and others to escape Los Angeles. We operated the guest ranch until 1975. Since then we've been doing what we can to preserve the whole place. We continue to bring our friends out to share, and are always asked whether we ever consider re-opening as a dude ranch. So many people love the place, and come to visit whenever they can, that we've decided to open as a vacation rental. The ranch is close to everything in Southern California, yet when you're on the ranch, you'll think you're in another world or another time. We've always loved to share this special place.

Why Peggy Shaughnessy chose Victorville
The ranch and its adobe buildings are amazing. When one drives over our hill and down in to the river valley, everything changes as you enter into a timeless era. The ranch is a green oasis in the desert, with cattle grazing in its pastures, and a riverine Cottonwood forest following the Mojave River as it flows through the Mojave Narrows. The ranch was first settled in 1858 when enterprising settlers built a hotel for travelers on the Mormon Trail. That hotel, now a private residence, remains on the ranch. By the end of the 19th Century, the owners had added two bunk houses, a dairy barn, a creamery and smoke house made of carved stone from the nearby rock formation. Our family took over in 1924 and by 1929 my grandmother decided to build her home on the ranch. My grandparents chose to build with adobe, and using clay dug from what is now "Pony Lake" all of the adobe bricks were made and cured on the ranch. The ranch became a welcoming place for actors, artists and writers, and guests of all stripes. Families and friends would visit year after year, spending their time eating fabulous ranch food, riding horses, swimming, water skiing, birding, playing tennis and horseshoes, and probably most notably, conversing with one another in our patio, large dining rooms or the spectacular living room of the main house. We've kept the ranch, even as my grandparents and parents' generations have passed. The guest ranch, long closed, is ready to encourage and welcome new friends and visitors.
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
The ranch boasts award winning architecture by the famed John Byers. The Main House and the guest rooms that are adjacent are all made from 18 inch thick hand-made adobe bricks, topped with hand-crafted Mexican Tile roofs. We are adjacent to the Mojave Narrows Regional Park (once the other half of our ranch). Because we are on the river valley, at the one location where the Mojave River runs above-ground year round, the ranch is a special place for bird watching. More than 250 species have been spotted on the ranch. The BNSF Railroad runs through the ranch's eastern border. We are on the main line between Los Angeles and Chicago. Visitors, initially put off by the sounds of the trains, soon find their rhythmic rumble and tooooot-tooooot-ta-toot horns to be soothing. The ranch is a place of reflection. Mrs. Kemper Campbell wrote her 4 published books of memoirs there. Celeste DeBlasis wrote her 10 published novels there. J.B. Priestly wrote Midnight on the Desert there, and Herman J. Mankiewicz wrote the screenplay for Citizen Kane while "drying out" under the stern eye of my grandmother.

What a unique place!
As you drive in to this place you are amazed by this beautiful ranch property. The house takes you back to 1929 and you feel like you have left everything to come rest and enjoy a very unique place. Peggy was the best host. She was very helpful and was always available if we needed something or had a question. I loved how our big group could have each meal in different dining room areas to create fun new experiences for everyone. They have ACs in every room so even though it was very hot outside, we were very comfortable inside the house. And the grand pool was a great spot for our big group. I would recommend this place to anyone!
Life changing :)
A group of 12 family and dear friends rented out the main house and an additional adjacent suite for our annual New Years getaway. We’ve done this for years elsewhere and gone from the mountains to the desert to the ocean and stayed in many beautiful places but never have we experienced somewhere so magic. The moment you come through the gate you transport through time. Our contemporary troubles faded behind us with the rest of the world, our adventurous spirit awoke and our children’s faces and minds lit up with fun ideas and potential. Those feelings lasted the duration of our stay. We were planning our next trip to the ranch before we even left. Peggy the manager was the kindest and most accommodating facilitator I’ve ever worked with. From booking request to checkout she made everything easy and seemless. Jimmy the warm ranchhand met us upon arrival and gave us an informative tour before handing me the keys and saying “it’s all yours.” It was such an incredible time that looking back at it now it almost seems like a dream we all had. One that we’ll be having over and over again for the rest of our lives. See you soon, KC Ranch ;)
You and your guests were simply charming and lovely! My staff and I loved having you here! Thank you so much for the wonderful review and we so look forward to many more stays from you.
Kemper Campbell Ranch
Cannot recommend this venue enough!! It holds its age which makes it feel like a second home you've visited your whole life. We were incredibly impressed at how the rooms dealt with the extreme heat which was unusual for that time of year! The pool is huge, the patio is perfection, the kitchen is fun and very accommodating and is equipped to feed an army , but what makes the ranch so special is Peggy. She is the manager and her love for the ranch is infectious. We left respecting its history, enchanted by the powerhouses that had stayed there and looking forward to our future visits. We filled the place up and there was not one need that wasn't met. We would use it winter spring summer or fall because it offers many different charms. It can be used as a blank canvas that dresses up gorgeously or kept to its original rustic beauty. We HAD to play a live action game of "Clue" because the rooms are so amazing you want everyone to see them all! The train does run all night but most didn't even hear it (thanks to thick adobe walls). Out of those that did hear it, there was not one among us that didn't think it was cool, if you want you can bring earplugs. The Ranch is part of the family now and because our children fell in love with it as well, we hope it will be available for generations to come.
Having this wonderful family stay with us was just a great pleasure! They had the best time and enjoyed every single thing that our beautiful ranch has to offer.
I am so glad to hear that they will be coming back for many stays with us as you just can't ask for a more fun and considerate group of people.
They will always be welcome here and I'm certain would be wonderful guests at any where they go.
Hidden Valley Ranch
One minute you're driving along the 15 heading to Vegas, the next minute and just a few quick turns, you find yourself in a hidden lush sprawling oasis. Surrounded by green pastures teaming full of life (cattle, jack rabbits, frogs, crows, lizards ...) with the ranch house tucked up into the hill looking down over it all. The house itself, I'm calling it The Nancy Drew house, is awesome. Every room is more charming than the next and if you love books ... there are books in EVERY room, even the bathrooms! A kitchen outfitted with everything you need, comfy beds, 4 dining areas, 3 indoor and one beautifully lit outdoor seating area. Tons of fire places, lots of windows. We had a group of 20 women for an annual get away, 10 of us stayed in the house and the rest of us took up some guest rooms. We had a great time, it was perfect for being together or breaking off into groups. We did yoga on the lawn, went for walks down to the pasture to visit the cows, see the train up close, we swam in the giant olympic pool, cooked lots of big meals, and played board games and puzzles. It was a real retreat. I absolutely loved it and want to go back as much as I can! Thank you KC Ranch for being available for rent and being so easy to work with. PEGGY IS AWESOME!!! - Heather
Lovely Getaway on a Charming Ranch
We have returned to the Kemper Campbell Ranch for 3 years in a row because it is such a unique, serene setting. Tucked behind a hill, opening up to the Mojave River, we love how in just a few minutes you are out of the hustle and bustle of the city and spending time on a peaceful ranch. We have our annual holiday party here every year and everyone loves it! The management and staff are so wonderful. This is an experience not to be missed!
Incredible, hidden gem!
This is our second stay at KCR. Such an amazing place with so much character and charm. The view is beautiful and even the train added a historic touch.
Our ministry team hosted a Women’s Retreat and Peggy couldn’t have been more accommodating to us. When we had either questions or a need, either she or her helper Brittany, were on it immediately. Amazing customer service!
Looking forward to the next time for sure...Susan and the C4C Ministry team.
