About Karla Nava
We are Joel and Karla Nava. I'm 54 and he's 49. Joel and I have been married for 20years and we have one son between us, Lakota, who is 20. I also have 3 other adult children in the mainland and 5 grandchildren. Joel works in I/T and I have been a homemaker for the past 10 years. We took our first vacation to Kauai in 2006 and decided then that we had to live in Hawaii - but which island? So from there we vacationed on Maui in 2010, and Oahu and the Big Island in 2013. We decided that the Hilo side of the Big Island would be home. After a lot of saving up, we returned to the Big Island in Feb 2015 to purchase our new home!
Karla Nava purchased this Studio in 2015
Why Karla Nava chose Keaau
We chose this property because it is central to Hilo, Volcanoes National Park and Pahoa. It also had a separate guest cottage that we could turn into a vacation rental for extra income. It is unique in that it has 4 separate structures on the property - the main house, a detached carport, a work shop, and the guest cottage in the back. (The work shop will not be used while guests are visiting.) We love the tropical lushness and the affordability factor compared to the other islands.
What makes this Studio unique
Unique benefits for this location is being so close to an active volcano and having 11 of the 13 climate zones right here on one island! You don't have to travel far to be in a whole new world and we love that. If you wake up to endless rain in Hilo, go spend the day on the Kona side or make your way above the clouds and watch the sunset on Mauna Kea! Tip: You will be told that you need a 4WD vehicle to go to the summit of Mauna Kea and this is true, but only after you've reached the Visitor Center at the 9000ft. level. You can drive a non-4WD up to the Visitor's Center but the ascent can be very rough on vehicles, so I recommend that you stop and rest the car every mile or two for about 5 or 10 minutes. The Visitors Center is at the 6th mile. Things to see and do at this level are walking a path through the rare silversword plants and hiking to the top of a cinder cone hill to get a view of Mauna Loa, the clouds below and the sunset. The Visitor's Center also has a gift shop and hot drinks for sale. As for the property itself, we fell in love with the spacious lanais that allow you to enjoy sitting outside in the cool breeze and just taking in all the sounds of nature, no matter if it is the heat of the day or if it is pouring rain. All of our dinners are had out on the lanai! Another great feature is the tankless hot water heaters - no running out of hot water!

Perfect Hawaiian Getaway
Karla's guest house is perfect for getting away and unwinding, Hawaiian style. We came for our anniversary and would definitely come back again if we ever return to the east side of the Big Island. We were 5 minutes from the closest beach (Maku'u Point: rocky, good for fishing but not swimming), 20 minutes from downtown Hilo, 1.5hr from Waipio Valley, 45 minutes from Volcano, and just under 2hr from South Point. All in all a great "central" location for the east side of the island.
When we arrived (late, after 10pm!) Karla greeted us at the front door, showed us where we could park and gave us a tour of the guest house. She answered the questions we had about island wildlife and gave us recommendations on places to eat as well as places to see the beach (that's where we learned of Maku'u Point!). Inside was a bag of chocolate covered macademia nuts, as well as a bottle of wine and 6 farm fresh eggs... those were DELICIOUS! The lanai was perfect, the hammock was a bit weird as it doesn't stretch as I'm used to but Karla explained this to us when we arrived. The mosquito net around the dining table was much appreciated, as I'm allergic to mosquito bites and got eaten alive our 3 days on the east side of the island... if this is a concern of yours, invest in bug spray day 1. The geckos were cool to watch crawl around the lanai, but we never had one inside. We even started naming them!
The bathroom was just what was needed, with enough towels & important papers to get us through our stay. The kitchen comes stocked with some essentials (ketchup, butter, spices) as well as plenty of dishware, tupperware and pots/pans for cooking. We made breakfast and dinner twice during our 3 day stay with no issues (just pay attention to Karla's instructions on water usage, as well as food waste!). The bed left a little to be desired, however I've got back issues and am particularly picky on the type of bed I like.. my partner had no issue at all with the bed during our stay.
All in all 5 out of 5 stars, and we would definitely return. Thanks Karla for such a lovely home. Mahalo and aloha!
Perfect Vacation Home
Serenity's Hideaway was the perfect vacation home for us. It was spotlessly clean and Karla thought of everything we would need. The towels and sheets were great. The information about the area was very helpful. We used it to find a great snorkeling beach and used the provided masks, towels, and boogie boards to have a great experience. We would definitely stay again.
Nice, Peaceful Atmosphere
This rental is excellent. It looks just like the picture & does not disappoint. Karla has thought of everything! It is very tastefully decorated--not thrown together with left over furnishings. It is extrememly clean & neat. Karla goes above & beyond to make things nice & comfortable. The only thing I marked down slightly was difficulty to find--especially in the dark. The rental is not very easily seen from the road. Karla did give explicit instructions (number of telephone poles past the turn to the driveway) & it was our own fault that when we went out in the evening & forgot to start counting. I would not let this stop me from renting this place. It is secluded & private.
Great home away from home
We stayed with Karla and used the hale as a base while we explored the east side of the island. It was everything we needed. I also really enjoyed the coqui lullaby and rooster alarms, but Karla provides a white noise machine if you don’t.
This place was the most beautiful villa, it was located in a quiet place, makes it good for families who want to vacation. The owner was very nice and attended to all our needs. There villa is family friendly, esp for people with children, they have a trampoline which our kids enjoyed playing in it. We would love to stay again when we go back.
An absolute paradise!
Oh...what to say. We just had the most amazing stay in Keaau. This little cottage is absolutely perfect. It was so comfortable and just decorated so beautifully. I loved being able to leave the doors open and have the hawaiian breeze blow through and listen to the coqui frogs at night. The table and chairs on the deck with the tea lights and the fun hammock were great places to spend some romantic evenings. The way the cottage is situated, when you look outside, all you see is beautiful jungle greenery and flowers. It really made us feel like we were in a secluded Hawaiian paradise. Writing this now makes me miss it so much! Karla was a wonderful hostess, taking the time to show us around and she was quick to reply when I had messaged her before our stay. I would stay there again in a heartbeat and would recommend it to anyone.
