This charming and comfortable house has the most perfect location in Lanjaron in the Alpujarras, Granada with free INTERNET - a quintessentially Spanish, no-through-traffic, sleepy plant-filled plaza (parking nearby). From the balcony, one can hear birdsong and the splashing of the water in the grotto-like fountain below and from the sunny terrace, enjoy the mountain and sea views. Both pretty bedrooms have comfortable beds (queen size in the main bedroom and the second bedroom has a large single as well as a single 'sofa-bed', actually a very comfy armchair if not being used as a bed in the top bedroom. In the spacious yet cosy sitting room, with its pretty 'pueblo' fireplace, one can watch TV, listen to cds or enjoy our library of very good books - both novels and non fiction.The bathroom offers a hydro-massage shower unit (hairdryer supplied as well as hand gel and shampoo). The modern though rustic style fitted chestnut kitchen has a four ring hob, stainless steel fridge freezer and is fully equipped. Breakfast or the evening meal can be had on the roof terrace, while enjoying the views. You might also enjoy a bbq on the terrace. The house is distinguished by its successful fusion of stylish design and sympathetic restoration of traditional architecture, with tasteful attention to detail and colour.

The terrace has a small bbq, sunchairs and a mosaic table where you can enjoy and while away the hours - a great vantage point from which to watch all the too-ing and fro-ing down below in the square.

Lanjaron and Casa Santa Ana are ideally located to explore not only the best of the Alpujarras but also the Mediterranean coast and Granada. We have both the med and what the coast has to offer and the ski slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains all within an hour's drive from Lanjaron.

The village boasts an Olympic-size municipal swimming pool with a bar, close by (also another public pool attached to a local hotel & very nicely landscaped). There is, in season, plenty of night-life and bustling cafes in the centre shaded by magnificent ancient plane trees and music groups including flamenco who come and entertain people while sipping a nice glass of wine.

At ones doorstep, you have easy access to wonderful countryside and spectacular walks. Should you want to treat yourself, the nearby historic Balneario (Spa) offers a range of treatments and massage. Massage treatments can also be arranged for you at the house.

For those without a hire car, Lanjaron has daily bus services to the coast and to Granada (only 35 k away) as well as to the mountain villages like Pampaneira, Bubion and Trevelez and a local taxi service is also available.

The town has a number of small supermarkets, a local indoor veg, meat & fish market, banks as well as ice-cream parlours, bars, cafes and restaurants. There are many 'specialist' shops selling local produce such as the locally cured ham, various cheeses and other cold meats, jams and wines - all of which are only a stones throw from the house.

There are many other activities available locally - horseriding and mountain biking, wild flower/herb tours, massage treatments and the village now has a 'water museum' and a 'honey museum' (local honey is also a speciality of the village). The Spa is open 10 months of the year and one can have a variety of treatments there including sauna at any time.

At the house over the winter months guests can enjoy our 'pueblo' style open fireplace (good for chestnut roasting!) creating a very cosy atmosphere in the sitting room. Wood is available for sale at the local petrol station.

The owners are long term residents who are very happy to assist in any way possible. We personally meet our guests on arrival to hand over the keys and answer any initial queries/questions.

  • There is an excellent hydro-massage shower unit as well as a hair-dryer supplied. Both bath and hand towels are provided as well as hand gel and loo rolls. The bathroom has a good sized mirror with light overhead. There is a good functioning fan/extractor in the bathroom which quickly takes out any steam/vapour. The bathroom is very well designed (although small) and functions very well indeed

    Bedroom 2 - 1 twin/ single , 1 sleep sofa /futon , large single/platform style bed and also a single sofabed
  • the main bedroom is a bright and airy room with balcony looking onto the pretty plaza below. and has a very comfortable Queen size bed with bedside tables on either side with ambient lamps.. There is a buit-in wooden cupboard and drawers so adequate space to store clothes. This bedroom has a wall mounted heater for winter use. The second bedroom has a 'platform-style' bed (large single) with a small ladder leading up to the bed itself as well as a single 'sofa bed'( this can also be a very comfortable armchair when not needed). There is adequate storage space for clothes too with wardrobe and chest of drawers and this room leads onto the terrace - a great place to sunbathe (there are sun loungers and small tables there) as well as a small bbq. We keep hot water bottles for winter use as well as extra wool blankets. Both bedrooms are very quiet at night. The kitchen is modern with all the mod cons - toaster, a juicer, coffee grinder, a sandwich maker, a kettle, a microwave and a variety of good quality cooking pots and pans as well as salad bowls and jugs. There is also an iron and ironing board available plus a 'fold up' clothesline kept on the terrace to hang out clothes. We also have an EXPRESSO COFFEE MACHINE available (as well as a percolator) for the coffee 'specialists'! The cooker has 4 rings plus a good sized oven as well as fan extractor over the cooker with plenty of lighting and space for cooking and preparation. The house has 2 gas heaters available. . The sitting room has an open fireplace ('pueblo' style) and plenty of comfortable seating and lighting. There we have an Internet connection so you can just sit by the balcony window on the sofa with a laptop.

Lovely house in great setting

A very well appointed house in a quiet corner of town. The house is well equipped with everything you might want for a comfortable stay. The photos do not do it justice. Mary was an excellent host, and nothing was too much trouble. The area is great for walking, with plenty of walks from Lanjaron, and also further afield. The town is a nice size, with plenty of shops. Cannot comment on restaurants as we did not eat out. If you want a glimpse of Spanish life in a little Spanish town, then this is for you.

A little piece of heaven !!

We stayed in Lanjaron for ten weeks.😁 Mary and Brian were wonderful hosts who helped make our stay in this beautiful place a very enjoyable experience.The local people of Lanjaron were very welcoming and friendly.Casa de santa Ana is an exceptionally wonderful place to stay,very relaxing and central.We would highly recommend this property for families and couples alike who would like to experience a little bit of real Spanish life and traditions.Many thanks Mary and Brian for helping us to make some wonderful memories.

Not enough time

We only booked one week for the October half term holiday, to get some late sunshine before the winter sets in (in England). We had a fantastic week and only wish we could have stayed another week or more.

Mary made it very easy to book the property and provided good information about Lanjaron and how to find the property. Mary is a lovely friendly lady and called in at the start of the holiday to make sure we had settled in and make sure any problems were sorted out.

There is so much to do and see both in the local area and further afield.

It only takes about 40 minutes to get to the Alhambra in Granada and just over one hour to get to the high Sierra Nevada mountains for the more adventurous.

There are plenty of well signposted walks in the area and the town is well stocked with Restaurants. The House is well located in the town centre but away from the main road on a peaceful little square. The house was clean, tidy and well equipped with good internet connection, British TV channels, books and dvds, so plenty to do if you stay in on an evening. There is a nice roof top seating area with nice views over the rooftops to the mountains beyond.

We really enjoyed our stay and feel like there was so much we didn't see and do that we should come back in the future. Thanks again Mary.

Perfect stay

Casa Santa Ana is beautiful, Mary and Brian are friendly, helpful hosts, and Lanjaron is a perfect base from which to explore the Alpujarras or the coast.

We had a great fortnight here - helped by the mobility that a hire-car provides. When the hire-car became unexpectedly immobile, Mary took to the phone and - in perfect Spanish - proved what a formidable asset she can be for he guests.

We would thoroughly recommend a visit!

Charming house and perfect location

We rarely go back to the same place but after a wonderful stay in 2013, we fell in love with the area and with Casa Santa Ana, and have recently returned from our second, equally enjoyable holiday there..

Walking back into Casa Santa Ana it was just as lovely as we remembered and we immediately felt relaxed and at home. We loved having breakfast and taking in the late afternoon sun with a glass of wine on the roof terrace - where you can find areas of shade and sun all through the day. If it gets too hot there are two very comfortable lounge areas inside. Spread over three floors (plus the terrace) there's plenty of room, and the house is equipped with all you need. On a practical level the wi-fi connection is good and there's even English TV available (not that we had much time to watch it).

The house is in a perfect location away from the road in one of the prettiest plazas in Lanjaron, complete with its own 'fuente' (water fountain) for which the town is famous, yet just seconds from the high street. As Lanjaron is 2km long from start to finish each district or 'barrio' has its own feel, and it's fascinating watching different parts come to life at different parts of the day and evening.

There's loads of choices for eating out ranging from tapas to full meals. We did not have a bad meal and compared to the UK it's amazing value. The most we paid for a glass of wine was 2.50 euros, a coffee is about 1.20 euro and you can often get a 3 course 'menu del dia' for around 10 euros. For a special meal or even just a drink make sure you find the Hotel Alcadima, with its beautiful views especially at sunset. For a lively atmosphere and people watching try the Bodega.

As a thriving small Spanish town, we really liked being out and about with the locals, not just tourists, and were lucky enough to be there at the start of one of their big annual fiestas.

Lanjaron makes a perfect base for visiting Granada and the beautiful Alpujarras villages. We love walking and there are plenty of options right on your doorstep or easily accessible by car.

Finally I cannot complete this review without mentioning Mary, the owner, who once again was a joy to correspond with ahead of our arrival, and who made sure we had everything we needed while we were there. Thank you Mary - it was great to see you again!

Best holiday rental

This has to be the best rental equipped property we have stayed in. Mary is by far the most considered owner we have every dealt with, and easiest. Nothing was too much trouble for her, even if it was'nt to do with the property. The locals in the Plaza were just wonderfully. The best part of the holiday was "People watching" in the Plaza, this could continue until the early hours if you wished, but was not intrusive. A great home to get away from everything. We would love to return in the future.

About Mary Meade

My husband and I have lived in Lanjaron for 30 years (we are both Irish) - our two children were born here and are bi-lingual. I have been teaching English to both children and adults in the village for 24 years and continue to work at the school in the afternoons. I also work as a part time administrator at an alternative holiday centre in a nearby village (for the last 23 years). Brian is a massage therapist whose practice is mainly based at the same centre. We enjoy a high degree of integration in the town and are known by most of the villagers. Our home is a few kilometres up a country track where we cultivate fruit and olive trees and enjoy the tranquillity of country life.

Why Mary Meade chose Lanjarón

We built and desgined this wonderful little house for its perfect location. The neighbours are very proud of the plaza and their plants which they lovingly maintain and think we have done a wonderful job of designing this house. This is a place where you can get a great insight into an authentic Spanish pueblo where the concept of community is still alive and well. And of course you will meet the ladies of the plaza while on holiday with us..They tend to speak only Spanish but are so friendly and try and adapt to 'communicating' with all our guests. The plaza Santa Ana also has it's very own Saint Ana and her nameday is celebrated every year in the square on 26th July.

What makes this house unique

I never tire of the views onto the plaza and the sound of the running water - it's quite picture-perfect. The house itself has a very cosy feel to it and has everything you might need for easy living as well as the fact that it's also very central.

The spa town of Lanjaron with its picturesque Moorish castle has a lively ambiance and all the amenities. It boasts several public swimming pools, tennis courts and a fragrant eucalyptus park. The dramatic countryside/ National park on its doorstep is perfect for walking. Local activities include mountain biking, guided walks, horse riding, rock climbing, Spanish lessons, yoga classes, spa treatments and massage. Lanjaron, famed for its mineral waters, healthy environment and the longevity of its inhabitants, is known as the 'Gateway to the Alpujarras' offering easy access to high mountain villages. Equally accessible is the Costa Tropical with golf courses & beaches. Inland, discover Granada's lively flamenco scene & the spectacular Alhambra or ski resort at the Sierra Nevada.

At home follow the natives and pass the time in one of the many bars or restaurants or watch life go by in this traditional, unspoilt, authentic Spanish village where locally grown produce is still sold from the houses. Many restaurants in the village serve 'menu del dia' each day at lunchtime (a 3 course meal for between 8/12 euros often with a drink included) if you don't feel like cooking at home - evenings are good for drinks and tapas. You can visit the artesan shops in the village selling local produce including serrano hams, cheeses, confitures, wines etc as well as locally made wickerwork baskets.

Orgiva, 7k from Lanjaron is the administrative centre of the Alpujarras. It has been settled by a large number of expats of all types to the detriment of its local character. Lanjaron by contrast, with its wonderful location, is an authentic "pueblo" community with a long tradition of being a welcoming and attractive spa town.

Ski: the ski resort - Sierra Nevada - is very close to Granada city itself and only an hour's drive from the village of Lanjaron - you can combine both an authentic village experience with a skiing holiday.

Lanjaron's location offers the most convenient access to Granada, Lecrin Valley, the coast and the Alpujarras (Pampaneira, Capileira, Trevelez etc) and is only 6 minutes by car to the motorway
