Two cottages in stunning rural setting - Casita del Sur

Bedrooms 1
Space 753 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

Casita del Sur

Casa del Sur is a one bedroomed cottage. It has a well appointed kitchen/dining room with an old bread oven/fireplace, a comfortable lounge with two sofas, and a bathroom with a Roman bath and powerful shower. The bedroom is large and has stunning views to the south and east. Outside there is a vine-shaded terrace with a large granite dining table and room for sunloungers. A garden and young orchard abut the property, and there are views to the mountain in the south over grapevines and maize fields.

About the property

O Curralino

O Curralino is a lovely old stone farmhouse standing on an acre and a half of mixed meadow and woodland situated in the middle of a beautiful valley in the province of Pontevedra. It has two independent parts available for rent - Casita del Norte, with two bedrooms and Casita del Sur with one bedroom. Both cottages have terraces and views of mountains, forests and vineyards, and the property adjoins a woodland of oak and chestnut on either side of a small river, ideal for cooling off on hot summer days. Mount Acibal, just behind O Curralino, has miles of tracks perfect for walking or mountain-biking. O Curralino is situated 55 minutes from the airport at Santiago de Compostela, and 25 minutes from the beautiful and unspoiled medieval town of Pontevedra. The beaches of the Rias Bajas are within half an hour, where there are many choices ranging from protected coves to ocean facing surfing beaches.

O Curralino is a 300 year old Galician farm house which has been lovingly restored using traditional materials and techniques resulting in charming, characterful rental cottages with a truly rural Galician feel, but with modern comforts. The meadow and woodland that surround O Curralino offer plenty of shady retreats, sunny spots, or space to kick a football. Beaches, mountains, towns and cities are all within 30 min of the house, and if you want to visit two countries on your holiday, Portugal is only an hour away.

The two cottages of O Curralino are independent of one another and each has its own private outdoor area with terrace and garden. Though ideal for individual bookings, the two cottages booked at the same time by a larger group would give up to nine people the opportunity to share a holiday together without being in each other's pockets.

Getting There: O Curralino is 55 minutes from the airport at Santiago de Compostela, 1.5 hours from La Coruna and 2 hours from Porto airport (Portugal).

Ryanair flies to Santiago de Compostela from London Stanstead, and Frankfurt.

Ryanair flies to Porto from London Stanstead, Liverpool, Bristol and Dublin.

Vueling flies to La Coruna from London Heathrow.

TAP (Air Portugal) flies to Porto from London Gatwick and London Heathrow.

Easyjet flies from London Gatwick to Santiago de Compostela and Porto (Portugal).

Check summer flights to Vigo from London airports Heathrow and Gatwick. Vueling and easyJet have had summer schedules in the past.

lovely place near Amil de los Milagros

  • 5 of 5

My friend and I stayed in casita del sur for 8 days. we didn't have a car. We came from the airport in santiago and got to Padron by train. There we took a taxi to this casita.

This casita is beautifull renovated. It has all the luxury you want, but the old typical Galician style is remained. Renovated with a Galician heart. Perfect kitchen, all tools available, great bathroom, great terrace, garden, great livingroom too which we didn't used because of the great weather. Ow yes, and a supurb sleepingroom with a great bed!! Never slept better on a holiday! The casita is surrounded by a great garden, the back yard is nice to chill in, with a nice open view, the front yard is full of plants and flowers. Nice small gardening details. :-) We had no car but two mountainbikes were available. We did most by feet. In Soar, a small village nearby (4km) is a small grocery. All basic food we needed we found there. A very nice shopkeeper as well, had a small bar inside where we tasted Albariño and Ribeiro. Too much in fact. Nearby is also a great pub: bar Giao, typical Galician bar. Nice owner as well, Javi, and very good wine and food. Had a lot of fun there.

Nature is lovely there, we made loads of walks, all nearby because we had no car. You don't have to go far to enjoy the beautifull nature en small villages. The owners of the cottages were on holiday, so we had all information and help from Pili, a neighbour of the owners. She was lovely, she took very good care of us. She gave us a lift to Rio Jerez, a 15km from Rebon the Arriba. What a spot, what a place, what a river. Thank you for that Pili. We spend there one day completely alone... it was magic. And also many walks to make alongside the river.

We walked also to Santa Lucia de Moraña (7km) , where we took part of the festa do Carneiro. And at night we enjoyed lifemusic of Milladoiro, a popular Galician Band, which was a great surprise. Great party in the town. Then we got back by feet, which was a bit harder. Luckely we got lift.

And it was always nice to get back in the casita, where we could sit at the table, outside, or laid back in the garden watching millions of stars. After one week, my friend and I realised we had to come back to see more... for the lovely casita, the area, the walks, the food, the wine the Gallegos, the culture.

Thank you Pili for taking care of us, and thank you Anna and Roger for the lovely casita on a lovely spot.

We come back. Sylvie and Hilde

Lovely old stone cottage in pretty valley

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Casita del Sur in early September and had a wonderful time. The property is ancient, but simply and carefully restored. It is well equipped, quite spacious and spotlessly clean. There is a large bedroom, with a very comfortable bed (up a steep but short stone staircase) and a powerful shower in the bathroom. A pretty and fragant front/side garden leads round to a shaded vined patio which gives way to a larger meadow leading down to a lush river and wooded area. The surrounding valley is really beautiful and there are plenty of things to see and do both nearby and a little further afield. Pontevedra has a beautiful and very lively medieval centre and Cies Islands are a little slice of tropical heaven just off Vigo. Local seafood and wine are exceptional.

Roger and Anna were lovely hosts and the information pack provided in the villa (local attractions, routes etc) was very helpful.

A real gem - we were sad to leave.

10 days in August 2010

  • 5 of 5

The house far exceeded our expectations - it was a total delight! The owners had thought of everything from a well equipped kitchen to a BBQ to a DVD player and selection of films to watch. Anna & Roger made us feel very welcome and filled us in on local places to visit. They provided a folder of suggested places to visit and we went to many of these. You definitely need a car and buying a map before you go is really useful. Shop keepers & restauranteurs very freindly & helpful, especially if you attempt to speak in Spanish (despite locals' first language being Galician). We were really lucky with the weather- a heatwave for our entire stay with temperatures in the mid 30s and no rain - we gather this is not necessarily the norm! For days at the house we spent most of our time playing games at the outdoor marble table under the vine-SO relaxing! The house sits in a valley around which the sounds of daily life echo, so it is not a silent place but we enjoyed hearing 'life' going on around us. Due to the heat we went to the coast many days, prefering beaches beyond Sangenjo or beyond Noia (which was our favourite town). Buildings all of granite which seems stark when you arrive but within a few days grows on you. Eucalyptus forests were beautiful. Only came across 1 British family while we were there - the area really is an undiscovered gem well worth visiting. Would recommend this accomodation to anyone who likes a slow pace of life and is willing to drive to explore the varied countryside.

Casita Del Sur

  • 5 of 5

I would recommend this property for a peacful holiday. It is clean and comfortable and well equipped. It is a delight to sit outside and eat under the vine covered pagoda looking at the view of the mountain. We enjoyed walking, days out at the coast and going to the markets. In the evening, Bar Giao is a short walk away and you will be made welcome with tapas with your beer. For livelier entertainment, Pontevera is reached along good roads. We will return soon.

Review of holiday in O Curralino - September 2008

  • 5 of 5

The information on the website is accurate, and that provided by the owners before the holiday and at the cottage was very helpful. The old farmhouse has been beautifully restored and was immaculate. The gardens are interesting and there is a lovely view of the surrounding fields and hills. If you like a quiet, relaxing holiday, this would suit. The main roads through the area are excellent, though the local roads quite challenging. I would recommend this property to anyone who will appreciate the peace and quiet of rural Spain, and is happy to drive off to Pontevedra, Santiago or A Corunna for interesting historical and architectural gems.

Galicia is an autonomous region in the north-west of Spain, divided into four provinces namely A Coruna, Pontevedra, Lugo and Orense. Pontevedra is home to the Rias Baixas, coastal inlets similar to fjords boasting not only the best weather in the region, but also incomparable seafood and the world class white wine, Albarino. The coastal district of Pontevedra where O Curralino is situated has a landscape that has been described as one of the last remaining examples of medieval strip farming in Europe, with a patchwork of vineyards, pasture, maize and vegetable fields. Atmospheric tapas bars abound in the streets and plazas of the old town of Pontevedra and the villages that line the coast, where delicious regional specialities can be sampled. Across the valley in the village of Amil the fiesta of Los Milagros De Amil occurs on the second weekend in September, where wooden platters of octopus are served with large bowls of wine, and the dancing goes on till dawn.

Other Activities: birdwatching, wine-tasting, prehistoric rock carvings, natural swimming pools
