About Dena and Patrick Mackay

We have been married since 1982 and have two adult daughters. We have travelled extensively and have spent many summers in the Dordogne due to my husband's French side. We had been looking on and off for two years for a home to retire to, and as of July 29th, 2014, became the happy owners of La Rosiere. We love the location with it's stunning beauty within a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Dena and Patrick Mackay purchased this barn in 2014

Why Dena and Patrick Mackay chose Perigord Noir

We wanted to be situated in an area that offered a wide range of historical, cultural, sporting and leisure activities, all within a short distance of our property. The magnificent Perigord Noir region, the world-famous Vezere Valley with its unique prehistoric sites and caves, the beautiful Dordogne and Vezere river valleys, the thousand and one dazzling chateaux, the stunning bastide towns and pretty villages, the remarkable local food and wine, the equitable climate, and the friendly people.

What makes this barn unique

In 2017 the Dordogne hosts the 2017 Tour de France, from July 10 to 12 and our guests will be able to enjoy the experience whilst lodging in our secluded holiday cottages. We are only 6kms from the nearest small town, Les Eyzies de Tayac in a ‘protected zone’ at the end of a small but well-maintained road with no passing traffic. Our lovely property has 20 acres of private land consisting of gardens, meadows and a small stream, surrounded by hundreds of acres of woodlands with abundant footpaths and wildlife (deer and boar), birdlife, and flowers. Our two spacious self-catering gites have been lovingly converted from spacious rural farm buildings that reflect our property’s varied and fascinating history – a Tobacco-drying Barn and a Water-Mill all with private gardens, ample parking and a 12 x 6m shared and heated pool. The whole property is a secure and adventurous haven for children (and grown-ups!) of all ages.

Well equipped, spacious house in beautiful quiet surrounding.

  • 5 of 5

Great swimming pool and trampoline that the children thoroughly enjoyed. Parents loved the table tennis space outside and like the kids also enjoyed getting in and out of the pool and just generally lounging around.

The user friendly space in and outside the house made staying here a great joy. Two families with their own "wings" meant that we could go in and out of our own bedrooms and bathrooms unhindered. Downstairs provided space for cooking together in one area and sitting together for dinning and general entertainment (games and tv) in the other.

There was no need to do anything else but rest in this fabulous location but we did. Our first family experience of canoeing down the Vezere was the best.

Lots of great activities to do within easy reach of the house and there is a large intermarché with a fantastic boulangerie about a 10 minute drive down the road.

Thanks also to the owners, Dena and Patrick who gave us a very warm welcome and provided a well considered welcome pack of bread, cheeses, milk etc. and tasty chocolate covered walnuts, yum!!

We loved it and would definitely book again. We have no hesitation in recommending this house to others so enjoy!!

Lovely property in the heart of the countryside, very peaceful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We visited La Rosiere, Les Eyzies de Tayac in August 17 for the second year running and stayed at Le Sechoir which sleeps 10. It has one room with 2 sets of bunk beds, 2 x double rooms and 1 twin room, 2 shower rooms and 1 bathroom which is downstairs. Beds are comfortable. The swimming pool is spotless and is in a beautiful setting this is shared with The Cottage.

Our hosts were Dena and Patrick (who live in the Le Moulin) who are very helpful and make you feel very welcome. Nothing is too much trouble.

There are plenty of places to visit from Medieval towns to the Dordogne or Vereze rivers that are brilliant for canoeing with children as they are shallow and slow flowing. There are plenty of restaurants in the town of Les Eyzies but with a limited menu of local specialities, mainly duck. There is a Lidl, Aldi and Intermache in the next town which is 6km away.

There is wifi at the property but we all had trouble getting a mobile phone signal and had to move around the grounds to find one.

Idyllic surroundings, lovely accommodation and a superb host

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 7 stayed in Le Sechoir for 9 days and loved the accommodation and amenities available to us. The house was immaculate and we had everything we needed. The pool was a bonus.

Dena Mackay, our host, was kindness itself and could not have been more helpful.

The surrounding area has activities for all ages, lovely scenery, affordable restaurants and all of the local people we spoke with werte welcoming.

Can't wait to come back.

Home from Home but with peace and tranquility

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely beautiful gite in amazing surroundings. Every need catered for. Lots of things to do as well as watching the wildlife. We saw deer chasing each other in the area just in front of the house. Enjoyed many walks from our front door and it is ideally situated for visiting many of the beautiful castles and towns locally. Went with husband, daughter son in law and 3 grandchildren aged between 1 and 4, everyone of us felt it was an amazing holiday. Would definitely recommend and hope to go back again next year. Thanks Dena.

Très belle propriété au coeur du Périgord noir

  • 5 of 5
