About Dena and Patrick Mackay

We have been married since 1982 and have two adult daughters. We have travelled extensively and have spent many summers in the Dordogne due to my husband's French side. We had been looking on and off for two years for a home to retire to, and as of July 29th, 2014, became the happy owners of La Rosiere. We love the location with it's stunning beauty within a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Dena and Patrick Mackay purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Dena and Patrick Mackay chose Perigord Noir

We wanted to be situated in an area that offered a wide range of historical, cultural, sporting and leisure activities, all within a short distance of our property. The magnificent Perigord Noir region, the world-famous Vezere Valley with its unique prehistoric sites and caves, the beautiful Dordogne and Vezere river valleys, the thousand and one dazzling chateaux, the stunning bastide towns and pretty villages, the remarkable local food and wine, the equitable climate, and the friendly people.

What makes this cottage unique

In 2017 the Dordogne hosts the 2017 Tour de France, from July 10 to 12 and our guests will be able to enjoy the experience whilst lodging in our secluded holiday cottages. We are only 6kms from the nearest small town, Les Eyzies de Tayac in a ‘protected zone’ at the end of a small but well-maintained road with no passing traffic. Our lovely property has 20 acres of private land consisting of gardens, meadows and a small stream, surrounded by hundreds of acres of woodlands with abundant footpaths and wildlife (deer and boar), birdlife, and flowers. Our two spacious self-catering gites have been lovingly converted from spacious rural farm buildings that reflect our property’s varied and fascinating history – a Tobacco-drying Barn and a Water-Mill all with private gardens, ample parking and a 12 x 6m shared and heated pool. The whole property is a secure and adventurous haven for children (and grown-ups!) of all ages.

We rebooked immediately for the following summer!

  • 5 of 5

The first thing we did on returning from our first trip to Le Cottage was to book a two week stay the following summer. That probably tells you all you need to know about how much we enjoyed our holiday. Le Cottage is spacious and comfortable and well equipped with everything needed for a family holiday. Dena & Patrick are warm and welcoming hosts who clearly take immense pride in their lovely property. The location is quiet and idyllic and yet within easy reach of all the best sights of the Dordogne. Our young family thoroughly enjoyed the immaculate pool and play areas and toys/sports/pool equipment. Many thanks for a thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable holiday, we look forward to returning next year.

Always a Fantastic Holiday

  • 5 of 5

La Rosiere is a wonderful place to stay. The house is situated in it's own beautiful valley. There is a very large swimming pool, which the kids and adults love. We have stayed at La Rosiere on and off for the last twelve years, since our children were tiny. It's safe for very young children and equally, older children can roam around the valley and have some independence. Every so often we decide to branch out and try somewhere new, but have never found anywhere better. There is a so much to do in the surrounding area, canoeing, museums, cave paintings, pony riding, restaurants etc etc. Dena and Patrick are great hosts and nothing is too much trouble. I thoroughly recommend La Rosiere. We love it!

La Rosiere, what a great place!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at La Rosiere for two weeks, out of a six week trip to France. La Rosiere was our base for visiting the Dordogne area and we found it to be convenient to many of the local caves, chateau's and castles, medeival villages, open air markets and beautiful drives. Because it is in the country it offers a quiet environment, a swimming pool and a lovely 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom character, stone cottage. The cottage is stocked with everything you will require, it is comfortable, has a working TV and if the weather cools it has good electric heating and a fireplace. We found the cottage very clean and everything worked! Dena and Patrick (the owners) are on-site and were very helpful with ideas for local sight seeing and answering any questions. It was a 15 minute drive into Les Eyries de Tayac Sireuil (closest town) that offers restaurants, tourist shops, pharmacy, patisserie, charcuterie, a small grocery market (limited selection) and the Prehistory Welcome Centre and National Museum of Prehistory. For a larger town (Le Bugue) that offers more amenities, including a large grocery store, it's about a 20/25 minute drive. We would definitely recommend La Rosiere to friends and family.

An ideal country cottage with every detail arranged!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at "The Cottage" to find the warm, welcoming greeting of Dena, the owner, and Sophie and William the caretakers. A beautiful welcome tray with edible (and drinkable) delights from the Dordogne region were also waiting for us in the spacious kitchen. The cottage is very well provisioned with everything a cook and a large family could want, including an outdoor barbecue grill, crib, and high chair. The cottage is well appointed with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and tables. Furnishings are tastefully down (Dena obviously has good taste!) and in keeping with the charm of a country cottage. William built us a fire in the wood burning stove as a special favor. We didn't use the swim pool but it's very well kept and looks enticing! Overall, a wonderful escape into the countryside and a good base from which to take day drives through the Dordogne.

A beautiful cottage in the middle of the countryside but close to the pretty town of Les Eyzies

  • 5 of 5

I have just spent a week at the Cottage with some friends and two children aged 12 and 10 years old. The Cottage has a pool included which is shared with a second property on the site. The properties and the pool are surrounded by countryside and if you want to get away from it all I would highly recommend it!!

There are three properties in total the third being the owners home. Dena and Patrick who own the holiday lets were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble and they made us feel very much at home.

The stone Cottage was very well equipped and lovely and cool in the 36 degrees heat as it had 2ft thick walls.
