House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible Bed, 2 Baths (Sleeps 6)
Our 1,500 sq ft, 2 bedroom (queen beds), 2 bath, customs home was built in 2007 and offers the most privacy and seclusion of any property near Purgatory Ski Area as it sits on 132 acres, yet is less than 2 miles from the ski resort, and 25 miles from downtown Durango.
The gourmet kitchen has stainless steel appliances. The main living space and master bedroom feature 52 inch flat screen TV's with 5.1 surround sound. The leather couch in the main living space converts to an incredibly comfortable and supportive queen bed. The large covered porch is a great place for lounging and watching the sun disappear over the mountains in the evening. The house is surrounded front and back with Colorado Rocky Mountain Wildflowers.
The property boarders the Weminuche National Forest to the North and East, which is the largest and most unused wilderness area in North America. There are numerous lakes and ponds on the property, and a road to higher elevations where the views of the surrounding mountains and lakes are spectacular.
If you bring your dog, it will have a great time chasing wildlife and playing in the forest.
If you need more space, we have a 3 Bedroom 3 bath on the property about 1/4 mile from this house.
Please check the availability Calendar as it is updated and current.
A 4WD/AWD with good tires is required December through March. If you plan to drive a vehicle not so equipped, please book elsewhere. Although the roads are extremely well maintained, we want to ensure our neighbors are not adversely impacted by our guests who may not regularly drive on snow packed roads.
We love dogs, as long as they are well behaved, and get along with people and other dogs. Lucy runs free on the property.

About Sean McCormack
Sean grew up in the area, skiing every weekend at Purgatory, and graduating from Durango High School before leaving to experience life outside this rural community. After 25 years, he and Leslie decided to move back to the mountains of Southwest Colorado to be close to family and all of the outdoor activities they enjoy.
Sean McCormack purchased this House in 2007
Why Sean McCormack chose Columbine Lake (Purgatory Lake Drive)
This area is the Saudi Arabia of solar energy, with plenty of water and lots of trees. It is easy to build a comfortable and highly sustainable life here. All of the houses, barns, and greenhouses were built using wood harvested from the property. The 27' x 110' greenhouse provides fruits and vegetables not only for Sean and Leslie, but for a number of other families in the area. Standing dead trees are harvested and provide a backup heat source for all the homes and buildings, with an additional 120 cords of wood harvested for sale, providing a carbon neutral source of heat. The trees are harvested primarily to improve the health of the forest.
What makes this House unique
There is nothing better than cozying up to a real wood fire after a full day of skiing, watching the snow fall during the winter, or lounging on the covered deck and watching the sun disappear over the mountains during the summer. The kids will have a great time exploring the forest, fishing in the nearby creeks or lake, biking, horseback riding or the many other activities close by.

Great privacy with lots of comfort and easy access to all the area has to offer
It's been our second stay here and I can only highly recommenced this place. There's total privacy, all the comfort you need and easy access to skiing, National Park, scenic hiking, exploring pueblo history... So much to do. It's also a great place to just kick back and relax, sit in front of the fireplace, or grill on the patio while enjoying the peace and quiet.
Trutz and Julie,
Thank you for your flexibility in allowing the electrician to fix the fan while you were here. Super nice of you both. Thanks for coming back for another visit!
Private and peaceful with amazing views. 25 minutes to Durango.
Would definitely stay here again.
Beautiful home, great amenities and very well maintained.
This was our second time staying at this beautiful home. It looks just like the pictures only better. It feels like you’re alone in the mountains but you’re only 5 minuets from Purgatory Mountain ski resort and 30 minuets from downtown Durango.
Tom, sorry we missed you and the family this trip. Leslie and I had a great time in Mexico however. We are probably the only two on the mountain with a tan right now. Glad you all had a great time with the property all to yourselves!
Wonderful Accommodations. Would stay again!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Everything was perfect and we enjoyed the feeling of being away from it all. This home was perfect for my family of 5. We prepared and ate most of our meals at home, enjoyed the warm fire, and time walking the property. The drive to Purgatory is very short. Highly recommended!
Quite the snowman you all built. Well done! Thanks for the heads up about the loose shower door handle. Got it tightened. Thanks for visiting!
Beautiful home and property
We had a wonderful time skiing, very close to Purgatory. Our dogs loved the fields of snow and plenty of room to explore. The owners dog Lucy came for a few play visits as well ! The house is exceptional and very clean. Comfortable beds and furniture. The kitchen is a cooks dream and very well supplied with great top quality cookware, knives , dishes and glassware .
Leslie and Mark,
Thank you for doing such a great job cleaning up after your pups. Because of people like you, people like us are willing to rent our homes to guests who like to travel with their dogs. We are looking forward to seeing you all, including “Kota and Rebu”, again in the fall.
Safe travels to Flagstaff and home!
the pictures did not do it justice
The cabin was better than I expected from the pictures that were posted. The cabin appeared very clean and was nicely located for privacy. The snowfall and the great view of the outdoors through the expanse of windows along the one wall was truly wonderful. We also enjoyed going for walks in the area and noted a book on hiking in the area but did not have the time to experience. I did find the pots and pans to be a little well used and would bring my own if I knew. I did not find a scour pad to give them a good cleaning. When we went to got to bed we found hairs on the sheets which we promptly stripped and washed before retiring for the night. We then discovered the pillows to be nasty. They were badly stained and did not use them during our stay. Perhaps pillow cover protectors or washable pillows should be used.
We are glad you and your husband enjoyed our home. The sheets on the bed were freshly cleaned and the bed remade. After each guest departs, I head down and strip the beds and start the laundry if the guest hasn’t already done so. Tiffany and Diane have only a five hour window to clean the house between guests, so laundry is the critical path. I’m sorry one of them shed a hair that ended up on the bed while they were making it. I’ll let them know, so they will be more careful going forward. The kitchen and laundry is stocked with consumables including dish soap, laundry and dishwasher detergent, a fresh roll of paper towel, dish towels, and a scrubby pad located under the sink. If you required another, I wish you would have asked. We store extras of all of these items in the “barn” on the property.
In addition to all the summer activities at Purgatory, the narrow gauge train runs between Durango and Silverton spring, summer, and fall. There is horseback riding less than 2 miles away. The nearby mountains are criss-crossed with mining roads left over from the area's rich mining history so the 4-wheeling is fantastic. During the winter months there is snowmobiling, sleigh rides, snow shoeing, ice climbing, down hill and cross country skiing.
