Secluded Modern Mountain Bungalow - 2 Miles To Ski - Pet Friendly

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,500 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 1 - 5 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible Bed, 2 Baths (Sleeps 6)

Our 1,500 sq ft, 2 bedroom (queen beds), 2 bath, customs home was built in 2007 and offers the most privacy and seclusion of any property near Purgatory Ski Area as it sits on 132 acres, yet is less than 2 miles from the ski resort, and 25 miles from downtown Durango.

The gourmet kitchen has stainless steel appliances. The main living space and master bedroom feature 52 inch flat screen TV's with 5.1 surround sound. The leather couch in the main living space converts to an incredibly comfortable and supportive queen bed. The large covered porch is a great place for lounging and watching the sun disappear over the mountains in the evening. The house is surrounded front and back with Colorado Rocky Mountain Wildflowers.

The property boarders the Weminuche National Forest to the North and East, which is the largest and most unused wilderness area in North America. There are numerous lakes and ponds on the property, and a road to higher elevations where the views of the surrounding mountains and lakes are spectacular.

If you bring your dog, it will have a great time chasing wildlife and playing in the forest.

If you need more space, we have a 3 Bedroom 3 bath on the property about 1/4 mile from this house.

Please check the availability Calendar as it is updated and current.

A 4WD/AWD with good tires is required December through March. If you plan to drive a vehicle not so equipped, please book elsewhere. Although the roads are extremely well maintained, we want to ensure our neighbors are not adversely impacted by our guests who may not regularly drive on snow packed roads.

We love dogs, as long as they are well behaved, and get along with people and other dogs. Lucy runs free on the property.

Very beautiful place tucked away off the road and literally right down the road from Purgatory Ski Resort. The house was very cozy and had everything we needed. We will be back to stay again this summer!

Owner's Response: Ryan, Bring your side by side back in the summer when you come. It is the perfect vehicle to explore all of the old mining roads around here. You'll have a blast!

Great Getaway for our Family over Thanksgiving

  • 5 of 5

Thank you McCormick's for providing such a beautiful and quaint home in such quiet seclusion. It was exactly what our family needed to get away from the craziness that life holds for us daily. We stayed in this lovely bungalow for 6 nights with our 3 teens and 2 Labradors, and we really loved our trip! Luci and our dogs had a blast chasing our son's remote control truck around the property...:) We want to thank Sean for the advice on locations to hike and places to visit. The Animas River trail and fish hatchery made for a great day trip. Also the Animas Brewery was fantastic! But we really enjoyed coming back to the solitude and quiet of the bungalow. We had almost everything we needed to make all of our meals during the week. I guess the only suggestion we'd have would be for a cookie sheet and pie plate in the kitchen. Because we were there over Thanksgiving, we found we needed these items... It worked out OK, and I still give this place 5 stars. We drove back home to California and our kids wouldn't stop talking about what a great vacation this was!

Thanks again for the memories! The Difilippo's

Owner's Response: Damn, wish you had asked about the cookie trays and pie pans. They are in the drawer below the oven along with the stove top griddles. Same goes for the three bedroom, so when you come back next Thanksgiving with your folks, you know where they are. Glad everyone had a good time! See you all in 2018.

Beautiful contemporary home

  • 5 of 5

The house is amazing. It is very large and has all the amenities one could want. Large screen TV's with great sound system in the living room and master bedroom. All the appliances were the latest design. There was even a washing machine and drier and a garage.

What a location for those who want to go skiing at Purgatory. It's literally just across the street. This place is quite a distance from Durango (45 minutes) but we enjoyed getting away from at all. And the ride to Silverton and Durango were very scenic. The property is huge at 132 acres with endless hiking trails.

Our host, Sean, was very personable and really came to our assistance when we needed help. We definitely recommend this home to anyone.

It was just as it looked. Very clean and pretty well stocked with what was needed in the kitchen and even some extra things from previous vacationers. It was cozy and relaxing. We wanted to stay longer!

Tranquility Amongst the Aspens

  • 5 of 5

Recently, enjoyed a week’s vacation in beautiful Colorado (Durango). This energy efficient home offers comfort, beautifully appointed bedrooms and several furnished supplies ( some by the owner, some by thoughtful guests). I certainly enjoyed this “home away from home”, priced reasonably in a beautiful location. Close to the city of Durango and a short distance to ski slopes, Silverton and Ouray. Thank you Sean for making your house available.

This was the first time that we stayed here! Sean (the owner) stopped by to make sure we had everything that we needed. The beds were comfortable! The cabin was clean, and looked great! Would definitely stay there again!

About Sean McCormack

Sean grew up in the area, skiing every weekend at Purgatory, and graduating from Durango High School before leaving to experience life outside this rural community. After 25 years, he and Leslie decided to move back to the mountains of Southwest Colorado to be close to family and all of the outdoor activities they enjoy.

Sean McCormack purchased this house in 2007

Why Sean McCormack chose Columbine Lake (Purgatory Lake Drive)

This area is the Saudi Arabia of solar energy, with plenty of water and lots of trees. It is easy to build a comfortable and highly sustainable life here. All of the houses, barns, and greenhouses were built using wood harvested from the property. The 27' x 110' greenhouse provides fruits and vegetables not only for Sean and Leslie, but for a number of other families in the area. Standing dead trees are harvested and provide a backup heat source for all the homes and buildings, with an additional 120 cords of wood harvested for sale, providing a carbon neutral source of heat. The trees are harvested primarily to improve the health of the forest.

What makes this house unique

There is nothing better than cozying up to a real wood fire after a full day of skiing, watching the snow fall during the winter, or lounging on the covered deck and watching the sun disappear over the mountains during the summer. The kids will have a great time exploring the forest, fishing in the nearby creeks or lake, biking, horseback riding or the many other activities close by.

In addition to all the summer activities at Purgatory, the narrow gauge train runs between Durango and Silverton spring, summer, and fall. There is horseback riding less than 2 miles away. The nearby mountains are criss-crossed with mining roads left over from the area's rich mining history so the 4-wheeling is fantastic. During the winter months there is snowmobiling, sleigh rides, snow shoeing, ice climbing, down hill and cross country skiing.
