One ground-floor and one first-floor apartment in a 13th century house converted with the maximum attention to comfort and in excellent taste while preserving all the original features including beamed ceilings, stonework and terracotta floors. Warm and cosy in winter and delightfully cool in summer owing to thick walls and a hilly position, these apartments, in the truly unique little village of Monticchiello, are the ideal base all the year round for discovering this wonderful corner of Tuscany, rich in artistic treasures and set in some of the most beautiful and unspoilt countryside in Italy, within the protected area of the Val d'Orcia National Park.
The village and its facilities: Monticchiello has 2 restaurants, 2 cafés and 2 general stores. There is also a post-office and a cash dispenser. Ideal for those with young children as there is hardly any traffic at all, picturesque strolls can be enjoyed in its little squares and gardens, as well as scenic walks around the walls and up to the tower at the top of the village.
Every summer between July and August the famous 'Teatro Povero di Monticchiello' stages a locally produced open-air drama every night for a month in the village square, and supper can be eaten in the crypt of the village church (turned into a taverna for the occasion). Booking is advisable as this event is very popular!
For those visiting in winter there are chamber music concerts through the Christmas season in the ancient granary.
Nearby places to visit: Only 3 kms away is Pienza, jewel of the Renaissance, and also within easy distance are San Quirico with its beautiful Romanesque collegiate church, Montepulciano and Montalcino with their world famous wines, Bagno Vignoni with its hot springs and ancient Roman bath....and many other little-known historical spots. Siena, Florence and Perugia are all about an hour's drive away, and there is an excellent train service to Rome, or as a change, you can take a boat trip to the islands on Lake Trasimeno (40 mins away).
Other activities: Whether you are an enthusiastic hiker or just wish to explore the countryside on foot, there are numerous beautiful walks in the area. In summer, there are several pleasant open-air swimming-pools all about 20 mins drive away, and it is possible to spend a day at the beach - a longer drive (60 mins) but worth it. The owners will provide information on open-air summer concerts and various traditional local events. Last but not least, good food and wine abound in this region and there are restaurants, trattorias and wine-bars to suit everyone.
Monticchiello is really a special place: a small village closed inside old walls where you can feel an atmosphere which reminds to a far kind of life.
The apartment (we stayed in the one at the first floor) is very cosy, well equipped, furnished with attention and charm. There is also the air conditioning, but we didn't use it, because the large walls defend from the hot of outside.
We want to come back the next year for the same occasion: Incontri in Terra di Siena, a festival of camera music in wonderful lacerations in Pienza, Montefollonico, La Foce and other places in the area.
Le Maribelle was one of the best places we stayed on our European adventure. Impeccably restored and absolutely beautiful the apartment was everything we hoped for. Barbara is just delightful and was so easy to work with. The town of Monticchiello is so fun to explore and a great place to start day trips throughout the region. Just can't say enough good things about the apartment and the town. If you are planning to visit Tuscany this would be the perfect place to stay.
Le Maribelle was the best place we stayed during our three week vacation to Europe. Located in the delightful village of Monticello it perfectly embodies everything that is wonderful about Tuscany. Impeccably remodeled and graced with views of the Tuscan hills this is a hidden gem. We could have stayed a week or more. Barbara is absolutely amazing!
It was va very nice appart, very quite; the small town is beautiful; we come for the second time; there is a lot of things to do or to see in south toscana. the only little problem is for the car (no parking near the house, since a few year).
thanks to Barbara.
With only 90 inhabitants living within the walls of this delightful, truly medieval village, and with two good restaurants within about 50 meters of the apartment, this is just a great place for a 3, 4 or 5 night stay to calm down from the hotel jumping that ensues from touring. The apartment was more than adequate, the large bed was quite comfortable (the smaller bed less so for an adult couple) and the restaurants obviate any need to leave Monticchiello in the evening in search of dinner. Or, if you want, visit Montepulciano, Pienza or Chianciano during the day for a stroll in a wine-besotted Tuscan town and easily shop for more than you will need to make yourself a great picnic, or even a hot, dinner in the apartment's kitchen.
In the spirit of full disclosure, the hilly city just might be a little much for
people who have difficulty walking. For the rest, it is simply a pleasant little workout to circumnavigate the village.
Barbara, the owner of the apartment, is a great resource and as open and friendly as you could possibly want. She loves talking and learning about her guests. It is a place you will likely want to return to.
