Oakside Cottage is situated in the small, friendly village of Braithwaite, only two miles from the centre of Keswick. There are three good pubs all of which offer excellent meals, a restaurant and village shop close at hand. Only minutes away is the Whinlatter Forest Visitor Centre, with its forest walks, children's adventure areas, tea room and shop, a great place for a family day out. Grisedale Pike, Causey Pike, Barrow and the beautiful Newlands Valley are all within easy walking distance of the doorstep.
Oakside Cottage is a cosy, centrally heated, well-equipped property, annexed to a former 18th Century farmhouse. Formally a barn, it has been tastefully converted to a high standard, retaining many original features including oak beams and vaulted ceilings on the upper floor.
Don't hesitate to call us on 017687 78092 for more information. Available Saturday to Saturday and for short breaks of 3 or more days in Off Peak periods or at short notice.
All of the main rooms have good quality oak flooring with rugs, the stairs are carpeted in local Herdwick wool.
The two attractive bedrooms, one double and one twin, are on the ground floor and these are traditionally furnished with pine suites, built in wardrobes, blinds and curtains. The shower room, kitchen and living room are upstairs taking full advantage of the wonderful views, Skiddaw to the front and the Braithwaite fells to the rear. The living room contains an electric wood effect stove, two comfortable sofas, dining furniture, Freeview TV/Radio and DVD/CD player.
The well co-ordinated kitchen has limed oak units, integral fridge, electric cooker and microwave. In the shower room, which is well finished, there is a large electric power shower, w.c., wash basin and shaver point.
Outside there is a small patio area with seating, parking for two cars and a covered alleyway where wet gear and bicycles may be stored. This cottage is ideal for families with older children or couples wishing to explore the fells.
Please note this is a non-smoking property and pets are not allowed.
I just wanted to say how much we enjoyed our week at Oakside cottage. We were so lucky with the weather and the cottage was very comfortable. We really appreciated the very comfy beds, the excellent shower, well-equipped kitchen and nice TV etc, not to mention the lovely view from the window. In fact, it was perfect, thanks very much again!
This lovely cottage is situated in an area which allows easy access to the beautiful Northern lakes. We received a really warm welcome from the owner Pam.
The cottage has been very thoughtfully renovated, furnished and equipped to a high standard with wonderful views of Skiddaw from the dining table.
There are 3 pub/restaurants in the village and all are worth a visit (we did)! The Royal Oak nearby, surprisingly, was NOT noisy at all.
If you would like to go on a guided walk these can be accessed from Moot Hall in the centre of Keswick, which is nearby (within easy walking distance or by bus)
It really is the most fabulous walking area including the lakeside path along Derwent Water ,or if you have the energy, up on to Catbells which overlooks the Derwent.Another option is the Allerdale Ramble, which runs along the side of Catbells (a flatter easier walk) but all with breathtaking views.
Thinking and writing about this review makes us wish that we were back in Braithwaite!
it is with pleasure that we recommend Oakside Cottage.
We will definitely be back.
This cottage was one of the few we found that was furnished in a modern way and very reasonably priced. The description and pictures of the property were really accurate so we were not disappointed when we arrived. The property is directly opposite a pub but in peak season there was absolutely no noise at all which was great.
The owner was really nice and very helpful. The internet access was really useful as we could check the weather every day for the latest forecast.
We were on holiday with our 2 year old and there was plenty of room in the master bedroom for his bed as well as room upstairs to move around. We did have to be slightly careful as the living room area was upstairs, but once he got used to it we didn't have any problems with the stairs.
I would really recommend this property for young families as the location is great for local attractions and walks and was really good value for money in terms of many other similar sized properties that we saw.
Would definiitely consider staying there again next year.
Would recomend this cottage to anyone wishing to visit the lakes, get up in the morning and have breakfast looking out a skiddaw, what more do you want?
The whole cottage is very clean, we had a good welcome from a friendly owner. We will come back here again, it's so central for the lakes, Scotland, Hadrian's wall, shops in Carlisle for the ladies on wet days, and a good pub next to the cottage for us males. The pub does good food, is friendly and sells JENNINGS ales mmmm.
We have been visiting the lakes and hiring cottages for over 18 years so we know what we are talking about.
It is always a pleasure to stay at Oakside Cottage. A very clean and well maintained property. The upstairs lounge/dining room is very comfortable, with character, and great views of the fells. The owner provides a great deal of information about the area with suggestions for local walks and other amenities. The cosy modern kitchen has everything you could wish for from making breakfast to full scale meals which can be eaten on the dining table. There is a modern bathroom with a walk-in shower which is just what you need after long walks on the fells. Ground floor bedrooms are nicely furnished with plenty of room for storage. The whole cottage has character and is a comfortable place to stay and use as a base. It is within easy walking distance of the village shops and pubs and near a bus route into Keswick. On foot from the cottage it is possible to access several fells including Barrow and Grisedale Pike. By car, Whinlatter Forest Visitor Centre is nearby providing an opportunity to check on the Osprey's. We always enjoy our stay at Oakside Cottage and are met with a warm welcome from Pam, the owner, every time.
Our stay in Oakside Cottage was a real treat. Cosy, comfortable and so well equipped. Everything has been thought of and what's more, it all works. A friendly welcome and lots of relevant tourist info to help you make the most of your stay. Braithwaite is an excellent location, close to several well known fells or there are a number of less strenuous walks in and around the village. We really enjoyed our stay and would be very happy to pay a return visit.
After more than 35 years of self catering holidays I have stayed in just about every level of quality both of place and property. Oakside Cottage is up with the best.
The owner's description is entirely accurate and the contents of the kitchen drawers show how much thought has gone into the place.
Braithwaite is a good spot from which to explore the Northern Lakes without the hassle of nearby Keswick's traffic. The proximity of three hostelries, all of which do good food if cooking becomes a chore, completes a cracking choice of places to stay.
In Braithwaite you will find the best of both worlds; a lovely quiet village but only two miles from the historic market town of Keswick where you will find a wide variety of shops, a cinema, restaurants, cafes, museums and galleries. Derwentwater is only a short walk from the centre and on its shores is the famous Theatre by the Lake.
With an impressive number of mountains, valleys and lakes so close at hand, Keswick is an ideal holiday destination. Not only is Derwentwater on the doorstep but also Bassenthwaite is only a few minutes away and Buttermere and Crummock Water a short drive over the wonderful Honister or Newlands Passes. The magnificence of this area can be appreciated throughout the year.
There is an abundance of outdoor activities; walking for all levels and ages, rock climbing, mountain biking, sailing, canoeing, and sailboarding. Keswick's 18 hole golf course can be found in Threlkeld, just outside the town, and fishing licenses are available locally.
