Le Rouquet is in the old part of Castelnaud la Chapelle which is listed as one of the most beautiful in the Dordogne. The picturesque village runs down the hillside from the medieval castle to the River Dordogne below and the property lies midway between the two. It is built in the local style of honey coloured stone, has a sunny South facing aspect and wonderful views across the valley from the windows and the terrace. Le Rouquet has been renovated to form two independent holiday gites which can be rented separately or together at a discount.

The house was built over 200 years ago and inside retains many of the old features including stone walls and beams. The outside walls are covered with roses, vines and climbing plants. The apartment has been refurbished to a very high standard and all furniture and fittings are new. It is light and airy and sleeps up to 4 people in comfort.

The apartment consists of a large fitted kitchen fully equipped for four people, appliances include oven and ceramic hob, fridge with freezing compartment, microwave, toaster and kettle.  The beautiful sitting room has stone walls and oak beam features and the sofa converts into a King size bed.  There is ample storage for linen and clothes in the wardrobe and chest of drawers. Lovely stone steps lead up from the sitting room to the modern tiled bathroom which includes a shower and heated towel rail which ensures it is always comfortably warm and towels are dry.  The bedroom is prettily decorated and has a double bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers and a lovely view over the valley.  It also benefits from its own outside door which is a great advantage when 2 couples are sharing and wake at different times!!  For your comfort the apartment can be heated by electric radiators during early spring or autumn holidays. Stone steps lead from the sitting room out to the garden. The gravelled area is for shared use with those staying in the Balcony apartment and the raised patio is for the Garden apartment use only. Here you will find a table and chairs for your sole use for al fresco dining. This is a wonderful place to watch the swallows and swifts swooping around and hot air balloons drifting overhead. It has a lovely view across the valley and shade when it is too hot.

It is possible to drive up the narrow lane to the house to unload luggage etc. but it is not possible to park the car outside the house. However there are several free parking areas a short distance away, the nearest being about 60 metres in the church square.

From the time you arrive at Le Rouquet there is no need to use your car as Castelnaud has all that you need. There is an excellent baker, a wonderful butcher (that also sells cold meats and some ready prepared dishes), a small general store and post office (with ATM machine) as well as an excellent restaurant and other eating places. However to get the best of your stay a car is essential in order to visit the many places of interest and savour the local markets and cooking.

There is excellent river bathing in the village and canoe trips can be organised from the office on the river bank.

The walking in the wooded hills behind the village along the marked trails is delightful and makes a restful alternative if you have had your fill of the markest and historic sites in the area. There are maps for all the local walks in the apartment.

We had an absolutely fantastic time in your holiday home. It could not have been more perfect. Sometimes when you see photographs of holiday homes and the surrounding area/views, I am a little disappointed with reality. Yours was much better than we could ever have imagined. The weather was perfect, absolutely everything was fantastic. It was true when we made an entry in the visitors book, 'we really don't want to go home'. Thank you so much for a very memorable time, the best holiday ever!

Wonderful holiday opportunity

We stayed in this holiday rental for a week, and wished we had been able to stay much longer. The owners, Judy and Paul, were fantastic in communicating with us regarding the rental. All went very smoothly in making the reservation and payment. This was great customer service.

The rental unit itself was superb. It was clean, well-maintained, very well furnished. The large kitchen was very modern, with all that was necessary to prepare meals. The beds were comfortable, as were the couch and chairs in the den. There was plenty of room for the two of us. We really enjoyed staying in the rental unit and would love to stay there again.

As for the location, it was also outstanding. We visited most of the towns in the area, and we believe Castelnaud was the best place to stay. We had nice meals in the restaurants, and had a fantastic visit to the castle. At the bottom of the village there was a boulangerie and post office that came in handy. Other major sightseeing venues were within an easy drive, as was the grocery in Sarlat.

This was our first visit to the Perigord/Dordogne, and we will return. When we do, we hope this rental unit will again be available.

Castelnaud is in an area of exceptional beauty with pretty medieval villages and castles to explore. Nearby Sarlat,La Roque Gageac, Beynac and Domme are outstanding examples of villages with beautiful medieval architecture and all within just a few kms. Other attractions include the colourful markets selling local produce, formal gardens and the many prehistoric sites including the famous Lascaux caves with their wall paintings.

No visit is complete without a canoe trip down the river which can be arranged from Castelnaud (you can choose how far you want to be taken upriver and then it is an easy paddle with the river doing most of the work and the chance to take a break at one of the riverside rest stops for refreshment and a swim).

There are also many well marked walks through the wooded countryside around Castelnaud for the more energetic. On a hot day why not walk down to the river and enjoy a picnic on the grassy bank in the shade of the trees and cool off with a swim.

All prices include linens and electricity. There is an additional charge of 50 Euros per apartment, payable locally to our housekeeper upon your arrival, to cover the cost of laundry and cleaning the apartment and outside areas.
