About Mark & Sandy Mueller
We both grew up in the Pittsburgh, Pa area, and, after college and moving around for work experience, have lived back there for 31 years. We have 2 children and 4 grandchildren.
Mark & Sandy Mueller purchased this Cottage in 2015
Why Mark & Sandy Mueller chose Erie
This property has been in my family for over 45 years. My family always vacationed in Erie in my youth and actually rented a cottage right up the beach. My parents then acquired The Viking when it became available and passed it on to my siblings and I. My wife and I just completed the purchase of The Viking from them in May, 2015. We love the Erie area and actually have many friends here from spending week-ends and basically growing up with them in our youth. Properties in the Baer Beach Community rarely change ownership and are typically passed through the generations so everyone knows everybody. It is a very safe, tight knit community. The cottages are very close together as in most beach front communities, however, our neighbors are friendly. We Love Erie!
What makes this Cottage unique
The most unique feature of The Viking is it is located on the Lake Erie shoreline, 1 mile west of Presque Isle. This means some of the most spectacular sunsets in the world! A lot of mornings and evenings the only thing you will hear is the gentle lapping of the lake on the shoreline. Of course, you will also be entertained occasionally by storms, big waves and amazing lightning displays, all part of living lakefront on Lake Erie. The lake is within 30 feet of our beach deck. You will enjoy swimming, beach combing for lake glass, shore fishing, beach fires, and just plain relaxing. It is pretty bustling during summer with swimming, jet skiing, and laughter all day, with numerous beach fires as night approaches and quiet after 11 p.m. or so as everyone is usually pretty tuckered out from all the daytime activities. The mornings are quiet with the lake at it's calmest, sometimes "smooth as glass", as the locals will tell you. The sunsets along this part of Lake Erie are simply amazing, some of the best in the world!

Viking & Baer Beach Rules of Conduct • Check In Time: after 4:00 pm • Check Out Time: by 11:00 am • There are no lifeguards! Swim at your own risk! Never leave children unattended! • The upstairs loft and Lighthouse deck are locked and off limits to renters! This is due to insurance coverage. Please don’t attempt to access either. • There are several locked “owners closets & storage areas”. It’s simple, if it has a pad-lock on it or say’s “Owners only” it is off limits during your stay. Please respect our storage areas. • The deck railings and rope guides are for that use only and to hang towels on. PLEASE KEEP CHILDREN FROM CLIMBING OR SITTING ON THEM!! • Rental includes use of the beach directly in front of The Viking ONLY. Please do not spread out on the beaches in front of the neighbor’s houses. We understand that it’s easy to meander left or right with waves, etc in the water, but please try to stay on our beach. Failure to cooperate may result in forfeiture of deposit and/or termination of rental agreement. • Please turn any outside stereo’s off by midnight and keep volume at a reasonable setting during the day. • Please use the white plastic chairs or green Adirondack chairs on the beach ONLY. Do not remove deck furniture for use in the sand. It will scratch the deck surface when placed back on the deck. Please stack the white chairs and others on the east side of the deck at night or when leaving. Please don’t leave them out, at water’s edge, or overnight or after your departure. • 2 of our deck tables are umbrella compatible, however, you must bring your own or purchase during your visit. We just can’t seem to keep them intact from renter to renter and it has become a problem. However, it is your responsibility to secure them after sundown or during high winds. You may also remove them and bring them inside if high winds or thunderstorms are predicted. • Please don’t spray sunscreen while on the deck, especially on your feet, as it will stain the deck. (You can see several outlines from this practice in the past). Please place a towel down first to do feet, or spray them on the side steps. • No motor homes, campers or tents permitted. • Boats and Personal Watercraft and trailers must use community parking area. • No boat launch on premises, use Walnut Creek or Presque Isle boat launches. • Boats and personal watercraft must not be moored overnight at cottage buoy. • Bikes permitted but not on adjacent Kelso beach property. • No smoking inside the house. Cigarette butts must be disposed of properly, not thrown in the sand. Please use the ashtrays provided. • No pets allowed. Please don’t bring pets “just for the day.” A lot of renters have guests that come to the beach for the day, please tell them to leave their dogs/pets at home. This rule is strictly enforced and will result in forfeiture of damage deposit and/or termination of rental agreement if broken. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. • Please observe posted speed limits! 5 MPH is strictly enforced. • There is parking for 2 regular size vehicles or 3 small cars’ immediately behind The Viking. Please don’t use our neighbors parking areas! Please ask them if in doubt about parking areas, especially for your day guests’. • Our kayak is not for use by renters (sorry! Our insurance will not allow it!). You are welcome to bring your own, but please secure them overnight by pulling them alongside the cottage. • Rental includes use of linens and towels, life jackets, beach toys and beach chairs. • Please place used towels inside hampers. Sheets can be left on beds for maid to wash so she knows where they go back to. • If you use our condiments, please replace it with same quality, ketchup, dressing, etc. • No fire is to be left unattended day or night! Our favorite place to vacation with the kids
This is now our second time vacationing at the Viking Cottage and we have a great time every time we come here. We love that this is right on the lake and spent as much time as we could outside. The property itself has a ton of character and the kids loved climbing up to the top of the lighthouse to get a better view. It feels a little bit like an "I Spy" book - there's so much fun nautical-themed decorations throughout the house. Communication has always been great!
While we were still on vacation, we were booking the cottage again for next year! I would definitely recommend this vacation rental (although selfishly, I don't want to as it will be harder for us to reserve it too) :-)
It was fabulous
We loved staying at this beachfront home. Everything was as described and our extended family had a wonderful time.
Family vacation close to home
This property was everything we needed and exceeded our expectations. Where do I start?
Location: this is a private setting with a relaxing feel. I am not an ocean person. I don’t enjoy or relax there but you couldn’t tell me I wasn’t relaxing on the water on my raft off of some coast. My kids swam and played with other kids and never once was I concerned or anxious about their safety. You are literally a 2 min drive to Waldamere which was great for a day when we needed a beach break.
The Cottage: was warm and welcoming. Mark and Sandy have not missed one corner or one detail in this quaint but roomy place. There was even a small PFD for my 3 yr old to use and she loved the freedom of swimming as much we enjoyed watching her. Our girls slept in the front room right off the deck. They were comfortable and loved the sounds of the active lake right outside their window. We had a fire EVERY night and some mornings too. We have already booked next year for a longer stay!
The people: Baer Beach residents have given us new hope in humanity! I mean that with all sincerity. The people were so nice and the houses are just close enough that you can have your own private occasion but still say high or visit along the beach. We had company at our fire and we visited and made friends in the surrounding houses very easily! And when we didn’t want to we had our quiet time too. Our kids played with a variety of different children that visited over the week we were there.
This is how vacationing is supposed to be. Mark and Sandy provide a wonderful place to stay and relax. So much so that I didn't want to share this place with many people because we want to be sure we have it available when we come back. But I was so happy when I came back I had to share it anyway! I couldn’t keep this secret to myself. Everyone should experience what we did this past week.
Great, interesting beach home!
This property was very interestingly decorated with nautical items. The kitchen was more than well equipped. The sunsets were awesome. Great to have 2 bathrooms. Thank you Mark and Sandy for our wonderful vacation!
Really unique property in an awesome location. The owners were easily reachable with all of our questions and very attentive. Highly recommended
