About Gilly Newell and Charlie Lamb

Charlie and I have been together for 14 years now and we are still working on several projects! Love adventure - Charlie is a huge sailing fan, has his own racing boat and sometimes, when the weather is good (calm no big waves) I will join him on a trip to France. Personally I prefer to ski, and made him learn just a couple of years ago. Now I can laugh at his antics! We love Bulgaria it is such an unexplored place and such big spaces with few people in it. Great place for families to learn to ski and the house is big enough for everyone to have a good time together or just sit and quietly read. Come and join us!

Gilly Newell and Charlie Lamb purchased this chalet in 2006

Why Gilly Newell and Charlie Lamb chose Samokov

Its good for big groups and families. Away from the commercialisation of the ski resorts and great for getting to know the local way of life. Private swimming pool and bar so you can relax and keep an eye on the kids!

What makes this chalet unique

We have a swimming pool and bar!You can see the mountains from every room (except some loos!) The rooms are spacious, we are child friendly, we have games to be played, books to read, movies to watch. What more can you ask for. Oh and we are not too pricey.

We had such an amazing stay. Gilly and Charlie were great. The best hosts. A real home from home!

  • 5 of 5

The property was perfect for us. Everything we needed in a great location and perfect for children. Even a tub of Lego. Great hospitality. We felt welcome before we even arrived and my children definitely didn't want to leave! Gilly and Charlie were great hosts and couldn't do enough to help us. We loved the skiing at Borovets. A brilliant holiday all round. Thank you Gilly and Charlie. The French's

Fab Family Ski Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We were a party of 8, made up of two families with mixed skiing experience. Although there was a lack of snow which was unprecedented, the Bulgarians coped well with the help of snow cannons and we were able to ski every day.

Gilly and Charlie were brilliant at making all of our arrangements with the ski school and transfers etc before our arrival. The only trade off was that we arrive with The Telegraph and its crossword puzzle !

We arrived at the Rila Mountain Lodge to a warm welcome from Gilly and Charlie and a welcoming bowl of soup and fresh bread. The lodge was warm, clean and cosy with plenty of bathrooms for everyone. There was a lounge and kitchen in each apartment but we preferred to gather downstairs in the bar/snug.

Gilly and Charlie couldn't do enough for us and treated us like family. The food was delicious and plentiful. We sometimes felt we were letting Charlie down by not finishing his huge breakfasts! The children were especially fond of his chocolate pancakes.

On returning from the slopes in the afternoon, it was lovely how Gilly and Charlie invited us to go for a walk with Tam and Tukka (the dogs). The company was great and we never felt the need to go out or leave the 'honesty' bar in the evening, It just felt like home!

We can't recommend this lovely holiday home enough and am sure we will return again and again.

Owner's Response: It is always heartwarming to receive such kind thoughts on our reviews. It helps us plan for the future knowing our guests thoughts, and what splendid guests they were!. Charlie and I so love the area exploring the many beautiful walks, especially in the spring or a bright, sunny winters day. We pack a picnic and head into the mountains, so many places to just sit quietly and be overawed by the beauty of the snowcapped mountains. Bulgaria has lots of mineral spa's and we have been happy to introduce new guests to the nearby spa's, indoors and outdoors some with mountain views, what more could you ask. Hot mineral jacuzzi, warm swimming pools and beautiful clear blue skies and fabulous views - winter, spring and summer. The beauty of it all is there are so many places you can visit by mountain bike, horse or 4 x 4's and hardly see any people. Last summer we finally got to see the Seven Lakes high up in the Rila Mountains. We took the chair lift (about 25mins from our house) and spent the day wandering around and still came away saying we must return as we only managed to see 5 lakes - bit of a walk to the other two so we thought we would leave them for another year. Can't wait to show future guests all the memorable places we have found ....the wild orchids are high up there amongst my favourites in the spring. Look forward to meeting new guests and welcoming back our regulars. Cheers Gilly and Charlie

The Best Ski Holiday Ever!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 4th fantastic trip to stay with Gilly and Charlie at Rila Mountain Lodge.

Why do we go back, because we love it! It is the easiest holiday in the world, Gilly and Charlie organise it all, coach transfers, ski rental, ski school, food games and long walks with the dogs!

They cook magnificant meals and the the evenings are so much fun we never go anywhere else.

Nothing is too much trouble, including weird kid food fancies like chocolate pancakes for brekky!!!

The homely rooms are spacious and contain everything you need to relax and enjoy your stay.

I'd suggest trying out the cheap local spa which has thermal pools and fab treatments.

I can't recommend the Rila highly enough and is worth the 20 min transfer to the slopes. It is available at other times of year for self catering and you can bike, walk and boat locally. Bulgaria is beautiful and unspoilt a real gem as it is cheap too.

We will be going back for trip 5 very soon

Owner's Response: What can I say, you are fantastic guests and we always look forward to your arrival despite all the big suitcases! The Rila Mountain Lodge ski season would not be the same without you guys, and we are now working on persuading you there for Spring/Summer - get you on the mountain bikes and back to the thermal spa's. Promise to show you where the wild orchids grow as well, and take you to a picnic spot that will rock your socks. 5 star rating for our most loyal visitors. Cheers and here's to the next time. Gilly and Charlie (Tam and Tukka)

WOW - what a wonderful trip

  • 5 of 5

Just back yesterday from Borovets, Bulgaria. 12 of us - 6 adults and 6 kids ages - 5 ->12yrs. We were lucky with the snow - it came down just before we arrived - and continued off/on through week. Skiing was excellent - Hunters Ski School pulled it out of the bag after a shaky first day for the kids (however, the rest of the week was superb). Ski school was generally 10 - 4pm but we could pull them out when we wanted if we wanted to ski with them.

My wife and i + another couple had skied a lot but we still enjoyed Borovets - the friendly resort. Only a couple of blacks but enough variety to keep intermediates happy & with really friendly people (everywhere). However, the best thing about this trip and I would recommend to anyone thinking of coming, would be Gilly & Charlie's Rila Mt Lodge - simply made the trip. OK it is 20 mins drive with a provided bus (a great experience in itself) to the resort of Borovets - but it is seriously worth it. Charlie & Gilly (+family) are wonderful hosts - you really felt included into their family - the kids hardly watched TV because they were too busy playing games; the adults chilled in the bar with great conversation, games a plenty and Zagorka Bulgarian Lager (hmmm!!! - excellanto). The food is plentiful, wonderfully prepared and gorgeous to taste - I will miss the home made soups we receive moments after arriving off the bus after a long day skiing. The accommodations are wonderful - this is a great place for a large family or as with us 3 sets of families getting together for a good time.

My advice if you go - learn how to play Risk (the board game), Cheat (the card game) and/or take a board game + crosswords - you'll be friends forever.

I read some quite negative reviews about Borovets before we left for Bulgaria - i am now convinced those people had just had a bad experience - most people I spoke to were loving the place - and I tell you what - although a little out of the resort - you cannot go wrong with Rila Mt Lodge and Gilly & Charlie - thanks guys - for a fantastic, never to forget trip. The Baskervilles xx

An amazing week for all 13 of us!!

  • 5 of 5

A must for anyone wanting a warm, friendly, clean, homely environment. Our first experience of a skiing holiday and it all went smoothly. The accommodation was ample size for a group of 13 with an age range of 5-65yrs. Transfers were arranged by our host Gilly to/from Sofia airport and also to/from the slopes of Borovets daily. The food was amazing - full breakfast, homemade soup when you return from the slopes served in the 'honesty bar' where the beer/spirits and mixers were sold at very reasonable prices!! Then dinner served around 7.30pm which was always good english home cooking... We had to fend for ourselves for 1 night and Gilly recommended a nearby restaurant which was excellent value for money and she also arranged our transport to/from. Gilly was the perfect host and it was great to meet her and her friend Jill and partner Charlie. Gilly put us in touch with 'the race bulgaria' for our ski packages, with English instructors and very reasonable prices it all made for a fantastic holiday. We are all hoping to do it all again very soon. XX

Best Winter Holiday Chalet Ever

  • 5 of 5

Where can I start: Rila Mountain Lodge and the magnificent hospitality shown by Gilly and Charlie made for the best skiing holiday that I have ever had. The accommodation was top rate, extremely comfortable and welcoming; the food was exceptional and more than ample - excellent breakfast and dinners and a welcoming bowl of soup, accompanied by a beer upon return from the pistes were fantastic. The bar in the chalet provides a very good selection of alcoholic beverages and has a fantastic atmosphere. Views from the chalet are simply stunning and are very unspoilt indeed. Transfer to and from the Sofia airport and daily transfer to the Borovets (15 minutes) were prompt and timely.

Skiing and Snowboarding in Borovets are both very good indeed, with boarding off piste being exceptional and no limit to the possibilities of where to go. The local restaurants suggested by Charlie and Gilly all provided very good food that was inexpensive to say the least and good value. A day trip to Malovetsa made for a fantastic day off from skiing and provided a lovely winter hike in the snow. The Guide and Skiing instructor who has been recruited by Charlie and Gilly is an extremely amiable chap and very good as both an instructor and guide.

I would recommend staying at The Rila Mountain Lodge whole heartedly and sincerely. It has a wonderful welcoming atmosphere, the owners are more than first rate - extremely friendly and welcoming indeed, the food and beverages are fantastic and it is exceptional value.

Rila Mountain Lodge is situated in the rural mountain village of Govedartsi, known as the Gateway to the Rila National Park.(featured by Michael Palin) The main ski resort of BOROVETS with beautiful scenic ski runs, bars, restaurants and nightclubs is just 20 minutes away - you will be driven there each day. Govedartsi has its own ski slope as does Malyovitsa, which are within the National Park. Plenty of opportunity for having fun in the snow! The mountain walks , along well marked paths in, are peaceful and breathtakingly beautiful. For lovers of mountain biking it's a must! After all that adventuring there are some wonderful spa's with indoor and outdoor pools- all fed by warm mineral water. The pace of life in the village will charm and relax you, and time spent in local cafes will afford you the opportunity to watch the world go by as it has done for centuries! In the nearby town of Samokov the bars and restaurants are less expensive than Borovets, with plenty of choice. There are also many individual shops and market stalls offering the opportunity to 'buy something a little bit different' at prices that will astound you!

Other Activities: Wake boarding, jet ski, mountain biking, hiking
