Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great family vacation last year at Spider Lake cottage. This year our summer will be busy with my daughter's wedding and our high school reunion trip to Hawaii so we won't be able to take a cottage vacation.

Beautiful setting

  • 3 of 5

Our family spent a week at 2 Lakes Cottage from July 4th through the 11th. The cottage is older but is fine for a group wanting to enjoy the great outdoors and access to both lakes. The 3 bedrooms upstairs are tight, low ceiling and no A/C. The spiral staircase is small and a little treacherous with infants and luggage. The master bedroom is lovely but not A/C. We were able to sleep comfortably with a fan and open windows once the night air cooled off. Again, the purpose of our trip was to provide a week of boating, fishing, kayaking, and sitting around the campfire at night. This is a great place for all of those activities.

The owner had a maintenance man stop by about an hour after arrival. He asked if everything was OK and left his name and cell number in case we had a problem. Sunday afternoon, my husband called him as we did not think the A/C was working. The man came out and was only there 5 minutes and said everything was fine. The owner texted that maintenance calls were $50 but he would only charge us $25.

We had a major issue with the payment process. The owner insisted that I had not paid the total amount due. I had booked this 9 months in advance! I had to make numerous phone calls as we were 8 hours away from home. He also demanded payment of an $800 security deposit. I have no problem with security deposits but my paperwork said there was an $800 hold on my credit card that I had given him when I booked the house. After many phone calls, text messages, and conversations, all was taken care of. My bank was able to email a copy of the initial deposit check and I paid the security deposit by credit card. I have rented many a rental home and this has never happened. His accounting system is non existent!

The appliances in the kitchen are old but do work. Three days into our week, I noticed that there was a small piece of glass missing from the cook top stove and a crack. I did not call the owner because I was sure it had been this way since we had been eating out and grilling. By Friday, it had gotten worse so I made my husband to call the owner. He texted us on our way home that he charged my credit card $311.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately our guest broke the stovetop, we graciously charged only the cost. She lost track of what and how much she paid and what she owned and was easily confused very likely due to medical issues. Finally, another family member took over and everything was resolved quickly.

Vacation Nightmare!

  • 1 of 5

I contracted and prepaid a rental fee and deposit for the pontoon boat and 3 kayaks. When we arrived the owner told me the pontoon boat was unavailable (he still had my boat rental fee and deposit). The kayaks are cheap -8’ Lifetime Lotus model. First time out on the lake, one of the kayaks began to sink due to a worn bottom with a whole in it. We emailed the owner with no apology and no response. Later he lied to me that he offered me an additional kayak and the kayak wasn’t broken.

First time we used the gas grill, the propane tank was empty. We emailed the owner – no apology and no response. Later he told me there was an extra tank in the garage but again no apology.

On our last day he dropped the off the pontoon boat while my family was out shopping. I was surprised he left the key in the boat clearly visible from the dock.

In the house is a “Departure Instructions” sheet and an extra housekey. On it are 19 violations with $500 in fines. If you leave any dishes in the dishwasher it is a $25 fine; leave a widow unlatched it is a $25 fine; don’t sweep the decks it is a $25 fine (they were dirty when we moved in); don’t lock the housekey and the boat key in the lockbox outside the front door it is a $25 fine.

The boat key will not fit in the lock box so I left it locked in the house next to the extra house key in plain sight.

We checked out at 10AM. At 7:39 PM he texted me that “I used the pontoon boat without authorization and took the key” and to “call ASAP prior to contacting the authorities”. I texted him back at 8:33PM that I never used the boat and where the key was.

He then accused me of “tampering with the pontoon” for removing the key and demanded $375 in damages. He emailed me “I will file a police report” and that he was delaying my reimbursement for the deposits I paid until I agreed to pay.

Fortunately, I paid with American Express and was able to get my deposits back by filing a complaint with them.

The lakes are gorgeous but the inside of the house is old and run down. The three upstair bedrooms are in an attic/ not suitable for adults. The house is minimally equipped: no dishsoap or sponge in the kitchen sink, no salt/pepper, no wastepaper baskets, no towels (he advertises that), only one small TV and the only AC is one wall unit in the living room. We were surprised that none of the beds were made.

I am a cardiologist and have rented many houses on VRBO. This is the first time I have felt compelled to write a review.

Surprise Birthday retreat

  • 5 of 5

Got all the kids and grand kids together for Mom 60th birthday. There was 15 of us all together and the house had plenty of room for us. Everything about the place was fantastic, the kids could not get enough of the foosball table and the hot tub. Convenient places to hike, run and walk are a few steps away. We also brought our older dog he had a great time also, slept for days to recover. The memories bring a smile to my face its always nice to get the family together and this place accommodates large groups. Ray we appreciate your hospitality and generosity.

Owner's Response: That was another awesome American family. We put in a THIRD full bathroom and moved the Washer and dryer upstairs. Wow, big improvement. We do recommend families setup the fire-pit in the daylight because once John Thomas the ancient Native American shape shifter comes out, it gets a bit scary for those not accustomed to Up North. We suggest you sing to him, he really likes that and it makes him go to sleep.

Wonderful time with family in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

A week with 10 of us enjoying northern Michigan. The house was perfect for us and would be perfect even if our group was bigger. We enjoyed:

- Swimming at the beach on Spider Lake

- Pontoon Rides to all the islands on the lake including swimming island (this is a must do)

- Seeing the Loons on Spider Lake

- Playing on the floating raft

- Rowing the boat on Bass Lake

- Relaxing in the hot tub

- Smores at the fire pit

- Making family meals in the well stocked kitchen

- Hiking at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (a must visit)

- Sampling the fresh cherries (I've never tasted cherries with that much flavor)

- Geocaching on the trails around the lakes

- kayaking around spider lake and exploring the island right in front of the property

The house was as described in the descriptions and pictures and provided more than adequate space to relax and not feel like we were on top of each other. Renting the Pontoon boat was well worth it as we enjoyed many trips around the lake. The internet was blazing fast and handled all of our laptops and mobile devices. The house is clean and the air conditioning kept up with the hot temperatures (95+) outside.

Peegio's was a neat place to eat and they have a good pizza selection with many specialty pizzas. They will deliver to the house.

We were there over the fourth of July. The neighbors on Spider Lake put together a fireworks show that would rival many towns and cities firework shows. They launched them all from the small island directly in front of the house. It was amazing.

The owner Ray met us when we arrived and made sure that everything was to our satisfaction. He really made us feel welcome.

We made many wonderful memories. If you are planning a trip to northern Michigan, I recommend staying at this house. It met or exceeded all of our expectations.

Perfection at its Peak- Feels like HOME, you will want to move in and never ever leave :)

I arrived at the place just in time for sunset over Spider Lake. It was gorgeous!! I walked inside and my mouth dropped!!! The kitchen and dining and living rooms are ideally set up for either small or large gatherings. The kitchen is large with plenty of cabinet space, a large refrigerator and two ovens. There was also a small fridge that we did not use just outside of the kitchen. There is a large island between the kitchen and the reading area, and a breakfast bar with long bench for lots of seating on the other side. The dining area next to the kitchen has a really comfortable wooden table and chairs seating 6-8. The kitchen cabinets, lights and drawers are well labeled for convenience.

The reading area has a large leather overstuffed sofa with a couple overstuffed leather chairs. It is very, very comfy!!! The whole main floor has an open floor plan, but it is divided into a few areas as described that really make the space versatile and user friendly. The TV area is on the other side of the entry door has a large sleeper sofa and a few armchairs. A built in bookshelf makes the place feel very homey.

There are two bedrooms on the main floor. One has a F/Q bed with adjacent bath. The master has a king with a very comfy mattress. A second bathroom is within the master suite, and a door and hallway separate the master suite from the rest of the main floor. Every single room has a beautiful view of Bass Lake!!! There are extra futons in the Master Suite and in the basement bedroom. Michigan State fans will be excited to see the stairway leading to the basement! (Michigan fans may want to bring along a can of paint! jk Ray :) Please note that the basement does feel colder than the rest of the house, so remember to put on plenty of blankets if needed. The basement room would be ideal in the summer, no AC necessary!

I slept in the Master Suite, and I was able to enjoy a gorgeous sunrise over Bass Lake in the morning. OMG!

But the view from the main level was the best feature about the cottage. There are windows on 3 sides and over 210 degree view of pure lake! The house sits atop a hill, so it affords full unobstructed views of Spider Lake on one side and Bass Lake on the other side. There is a large deck up top, outside the kitchen, with a hot tub overlooking Bass. A smaller sun deck is down by the lake.

Also firepit, kayaks, fishing boat, pontoon and lots of kid sleeping space upstairs!

Lots of Good Memories

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay, the setting is absolutely beautiful, the beds comfy and the main floor is very spacious with large windows. Lots of extras here like the two ovens, big grounds and two lakes with sandy beaches. It was close to Traverse City but still had privacy, especially during the Cherry Festival. Thank you very much, we enjoyed this stay,
