About John and Enid
John and Enid left Calgary, Alberta and moved to Cuenca at the end of 2014. Along with us came two wire hair daschunds - they were the heroes of the exhausting trip. After months of research and preparing for the move, we made an exploratory visit in September and at that time, we found the place that would be our new home. After returning to Calgary, we sold all our belongings and made plans for the day that we would leave Canada and arrive in Cuenca. We arrived near to the end of 2014 and have not looked back since.
John and Enid purchased this Condo in 2015
Why John and Enid chose Cuenca
Casa San Sebastian is history - it is the first colonial building to meet UNESCO requirements and to be rehabilitated in the El Centro area. The building was developed by a well-known Cuenca developer - Juan Heredia. It is just a short walk to Parque Calderon ... the centre of Cuenca and a hub of activity, especially on the weekends and during holidays. The outdoor flower market and San Francisco Market, along with food mercados, shopping and small tiendas are all close-by. The San Sebas Plaza is 2 blocks away and with that comes a popular restaurant/coffee house as well as a beer house and a cafe/gallery. Loft #1 is perfect for either a couple or single person who wants to make Cuenca their home - whether it be a permanent or a temporary stay. Along with being in a safe area, Casa San Sebastian is well maintained and all who either stay there temporarily or live there permanently, take pride in being part of Cuenca's history and have the luxury of being in the perfect and convenient location.
What makes this Condo unique
Loft #1 in the Casa San Sebastian building was our choice for many reasons ... . it is in a safe and convenient location . it is in a secure and safe building . it is part of Cuenca's history . it is in a well-managed small building/condominium with only 8 units . it has 2 outdoor areas that are available to all tenants . Loft #1 is well maintained and the owners live in Cuenca . it is a suite where we would live (but we have 2 dogs) . it is close to all amenities . it is within walking distance to Parque Calderon and the historic centre of the city . it is nearby schools for learning Spanish . full-time residents live in the building, as well as people who are visiting Cuenca . has welcoming and comfortable outdoor space and view of the city from the rooftop It is the ideal place to 'hang your hat' when you are in Cuenca ... see you there!

Such a charming city and great location from which to experience it. We loved staying at Enid's loft. On an inside courtyard, it was a peaceful place, but right outside the door the beautiful city unfolded. Great (and reasonably-priced) restaurants in all directions. The people were warm and friendly. The Simon Bolivar Spanish school is right around the corner. The loft has a fully equipped kitchen, washer/dryer, and powder room downstairs and a comfortable king bed and full bathroom upstairs. The upstairs shower always has hot water. The loft was spotless when we arrived and Marisol came to clean it every two weeks which was wonderful. Grab a cheap taxi to go to a full-size grocery store (Super-Maxi) and you're all set. Our favorite walk was along the Tomebamba River which winds through the city. Enid has lots of great ideas for side trips and prepared a binder of useful information for you. Our favorite trip was to Hosteria Dos Chorreras near Cajas National Park 45 mins from the loft. Our favorite restaurant was Le Petit Jardin in the hills just outside the city, but we also enjoyed dinner at El Mercado in town and San Sebas for breakfast. We stayed in the loft for almost 3 months and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Thanks, Enid, for your great hospitality. Can't wait to come back to beautiful Ecuador.
It was a pleasure having you both stay in the apartment. It was great that you were able to take in some of the activities outside the city. For sure you are welcome to return when you are ready to explore more of Ecuador. Thank you for choosing Loft #1.
Great apartment in a great location.
Clean and safe apartment close to parks, cafes, and bus lines. Very walkable to many cool places. Apartment is as advertised!
You had some memorable experiences during your visit ... you met lovely people, had fun with the owners of the leather shop at their home, had leather boots and a fabulous leather jacket custom made and a whole lot more! Let us know when you will be returning to Cuenca.Thank you for choosng Loft #1.
We LOVED this place!
John and Enid’s place in El Centro is clean, quiet, comfy and secure. It is the ideal set up for 1 or 2 people. If you want to take advantage of the fresh local food and cook, the kitchen has all you could need and more including: utensils, pots and pans, cutting boards gas cooktop, oven, microwave etc. There are ample towels and sheets. We stayed a month, and a maid service came in to clean halfway through. The location is great; in El Centro, but quiet. Very walkable location, but busses and taxis readily available.
Pick up and return to the airport are included. We were greeted by Enid. John and Enid are very responsive and friendly. On our arrival, there was a basket of fresh fruit and fresh flowers. Enid has collected all sorts of helpful information in her black binder. (I needed a haircut and found Hilda on Av of the Americas!)
There really are not enough words to say how much we enjoyed our stay in Casa San Sebastián! John and Enid are super hosts. Very highly recommended!
Cindy and Richard ... It was a pleasure having you as guests and we would love to have you come back to Cuenca. You sent such kind words and it is because of people like you that make it enjoyable for us to do what we do.
Well stocked with everything one would need in the kitchen, great shower to get us up every morning.
The property is very well maintained and exceptionally quiet. We were able to keep a window open every night an never heard a sound. One day was sunny and warm enough to go to the roof top and read without hearing anything. This is amazing considering the apartment in the centre of town and it is noisy once outside the building. The fabulous location allowed us to walk to shop in the market, walk to many terrific restaurants and walk to several parks to watch the passing scene. We'd highly recommend this apartment to anyone visiting Ecuador and wanting to get to know Cuenca.
Clean and Comfortable Loft
The Loft is exactly as pictured, lovely and clean and is fully equipped with anything you could possibly need. It is situated in a nice part of historic Cuenca with shops and restaurants all handy and Parque Calderon a 10 min walk away. The building is secure and the rooftop terrace is wonderful. We were here for a month and cleaning ladies came in after two weeks here and did a great job. The hosts were kind enough to leave us water, coffee and fresh fruit when we arrived and even arranged and paid for a taxi to take us to the airport on our departure. We would certainly recommend staying here.
Thank you Dianne and Tony. Glad to know that you enjoyed your stay and you were able to visit with your cousin and his wife. Enjoy your stay in Salinas. When you are ready to return to Cuenca, let us know!
I hit the jackpot with John and Enid's place. I have rented apartments while traveling overseas for almost forty years and it just does not get better than this. The apartment was exactly as represented and the hosts were exceptional. I hated to leave but will be back next year if John and Enid will have me.
The apartment is located in a wonderful Cuenca neighborhood which I knew from previous experience in Cuenca. The number of units in the building was small so privacy was ensured. The apartment contained everything I could have asked for had it been my own home. Enid thought of everything, from the beautiful and warm hand crocheted Afghan quilt, to scissors and a wine opener in the kitchen.
The hosts were easy to work with and fun to interact with, giving me privacy when I wanted it and availing themselves of their experiences and expertise when I asked. This was the perfect month away from the hot US Summer I had hoped. My only regret was my last minute change which cut my visit from two months to only one.
Thank you John and Enid for a wonderful time!
Thank you for taking the time to submit the 5 star rating. You were a great guest and we are already looking forward to welcoming you back to Cuenca.
