This property is 174 acres of untouched pine forests and woods. The property was purchased in 1910 by our Grandfather, Edmund Richard Polk and his wife Agnes. They and their five children established a summer resort, building the first cottage in 1911. That cottage is in use today and provides the owners many hours of summer fun.
In 1958-59, Arthur E. Polk, Sr. and Arthur, Junior dug a mile-long channel throughout the property, making the main section an island. A bridge was purchased for scrap, for $250, and moved by housemovers to the present location (22 miles from its original spot in Sumnerville, MI)
My family and I stayed in Heron's Nest Cottage for a week in July, 2015. We had a delightful time. The cottage was extremely comfortable and suited us just perfectly. The cottage was furnished with everything we needed to prepare meals, grill outdoors, and relax on the deck. We were provided with firewood and used the firepit numerous times while enjoying the views of the lake and the channel that backs up to the cottage. The lake was refreshing to swim in. My husband even fished a little with some luck. We are excited about staying again next summer. Thank you Cynthia for making this a memorable vacation.
We had a great time at Heron's Nest. We were pleasantly surprised with the overall condition of the cottage. The inside had recently been redone with new flooring, fixtures, bathroom, etc. The large deck outside was equipped with a large picnic table and plenty of chairs and tables which accommodated our parties of 20 or more nicely. Most of our people commuted from the South Bend area. We had more than ample parking for all of the cars and outdoor space to set up volleyball and corn hole. Our age range was 10 to 82 and the property was comfortable for everyone. There was also a nice fire pit that we used every night. The Mueller's were very generous with the firewood and would occasionally check on us to see what we needed. There was a nice sandy beach with pier 50 yards from the cottage for swimming and a dock behind the property on the canal where we docked our pontoon. The price was reasonable and Cynthia was flexible to accommodate our specific dates. Great week at the lake; looking forward to next year!
My bride and I hosted our wedding on Cynthia's three properties (turtle cove, frog hollow, heron's nest)...we had a bunch of friends and relatives come stay in the cottages for several days before the big day, and then had a big outdoor thing with many more guests the day of. Plenty of space...
And it's beautiful: quiet and peaceful, wonderful lake my little niece and nephew loved going out on, nice open lawn for the reception, beautiful tree covered area right in front of the lake where we said our vows, barbecue pits right in the backyard by a canal so you could dock your boat right next to them, the cabins had everything you might need with a grocery store and restaurants just a few minutes drive down the road...
Plenty of space for a big party if you go in for all three looking to throw a wedding, but if you rent just one of the three, plenty of space for a quiet getaway from the city with just the family, and everything you might need...
Cynthia was incredibly helpful whenever we had a need, which as you can imagine was often when prepping a wedding...She's kind and caring and responsive and unobtrusive...really, what more can you ask for?
I've never done this kind of rental before, and neither had my wife, but if you're looking for a peaceful beautiful midwestern spot to take a break or throw a big outdoor party, we can't imagine a better site or a better owner. We'll be going back some anniversary soon, you should too...
