Come visit our Cedar Key island getaway and truly embrace nature's paradise! Cedar Key Island, the clam capital, is far enough away from the hectic outside life but close enough to airports to make this escape possible. It's a wonderful, quiet town with a lot of character - they say it feels like the 'old Key West'. Our home has been fully reconditioned with a gorgeous new kitchen island, appliances, colorful stools...to put a smile on your face. Decorated in tasteful, simple style with airy colors to kick back and let the stress fade away. Loft with 2 full beds, 2 queen bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, large couch with a pullout bed and outside deck positioned perfectly to take in the BREATHTAKING VIEW and GORGEOUS SUNSETS. New exterior and clam shell driveway, located at the end of a private, quiet road. The spectacular, quiet beauty of nature gently caresses the back of our home. When you are ready to explore the town or pop over to the tiny airport to watch the visiting planes, it's the perfect bike ride or to take a leisurely walk. The best way to start the day - sit on our deck with a cup of coffee in hand, with the breeze gently blowing. Be a part of the peaceful atmoshphere - you will WANT to turn off the cell phone and just be in the moment. Walk down to the nearby nature walk for a quick swim and enjoy a bird watching paradise!

Are you familiar with Cedar Key?
We absolutely enjoy any time we can spend in the home there & have worked very hard to restore it in the last couple of years. It's a great place - really cute as a button. It's "bright" with decorations to really make you smile.
We purchased items from local artists to decorate. Every time we go there, it's like putting real life aside and we really adore it. The view is beyond gorgeous from our deck . Folks in the neighborhood really stay to themselves so it's like having your own road to the home. We recently installed a outdoor shower on the deck overlooking the salt marsh. It's lots of fun to wash off at the end of the day while watching the sun set. We just installed a gate up on the deck so a pup can enjoy a nap in the sunshine. Each morning birds from around the area feed on the fish in the shallow waters at low tide not far from the deck. The view from the deck changes each day depending on the weather and tides.
The island has a great golf cart rental place so lots of people enjoy that unique experience and park their cars :) while they are visiting. The nature walk is very close to our house so we like to walk down there. Sometimes we swim at the end of the path. We enjoy the town "beach" but prefer a few quiet spots we've found, to splash around and enjoy the quiet. I believe the town beach and most places are really pet friendly. On more than one occasion we've seen dolphins while we were swimming! For kayaking, we go over to the nature watch or throw them in the back of the car and go off the town beach.
It's fun to ride over to the little airport. Folks travel from far and wide to fish in CK, bird watch or take photographs. We totally look forward to taking boat and or small Plane tours while in CK, learning about the little islands nearby or better yet, renting a boat and exploring them ourselves! The islands are great - they are quiet, undisturbed and it's awesome to picnic as we sit in the little pools of water or at the water's edge. There is a nice mix of artists locally which is neat. There are interesting little shops - jewelry, paintings, clothes, hot sauce - all kinds of cool things to purchase or look at. There are several small churches that welcome visitors. The small library has a computer for use and it's easy to get a card to take out books (and they have piles of donated books to keep).
There is a huge pier in the center of town for fishing. Go to the hardware store to ask any questions - they know everything there!
CK is the clam capital of course, so you are in for a treat. We visited one of the clam places (on the right as you enter town, but before you go over the little bridge to get to the gas station) and they do little tours inside their building about growing clams which is interesting. You can buy tons of clams at a super reasonable price and have a clam feast!
Restaurants - The best burgers are at Island Hotel (and it's rumored it is haunted there!). It's also fun to grab a burger or sandwich at the big deck (outdoor restaurant w/live music sometimes) right in the center of town. Steamers has good food (especially the sea food pasta dishes) and sometimes live music. Kona Joes has good sandwiches and delicious smoothies. The pizza place (the one as you leave town) is pretty good and is take out only. Their wings are popular. Our favorite grownup hang out is the Tiki Bar on the right hand side a little before you enter town (sign says Low Key Hideaway and there are brightly painted doors) for an inexpensive drink, great sunset in a casual atmosphere. (Tony's clam chowder is amazing! However, our secret is that you can ask the waitress for "the big bowl" of chowder - it's not on the menu but locals know about it & they honor it, eat in house only no take out. It's worth it.)
The little hardware store in town has a helpful staff and there are 2 small markets - there is a fair selection of misc items. We try to plan ahead though and stop in Crystal River or another larger town on the way in, to get supplies we will need during our stay like suntan lotion, bug spray, foods we can't live without...There is also a dollar general just outside of town that is handy to have nearby.
The kids and I spent 5 weeks in Cedar Key a few summers ago. We weren't sure if we'd "get bored" but the time flew by and we cried when we had to leave! It's truly a pleasure to visit. We've tried to make our home into a retreat - ready for relaxation and enjoyment. The place just makes us smile. One of my favorite parts of CK, is to have morning coffee or an afternoon margarita out on the quiet deck, enjoying one of most glorious views imaginable. Seriously, our view is terrific - wildlife, gorgeous sunsets and the open sky. It's so private and calm. I thought I'd be on laptop nonstop being so far away from civilization but within days, I stuck it in a drawer and just enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere! Hopefully you like seafood - the kids dream of going back to CK soon to get their fill. We bought a 100 clams for $20 on our last night there during the last trip and cooked them up in white wine and garlic - it was a wonderful celebration of our new kitchen!

My wife and I spent a wonderful week in Cedar Key. Needless to say we can not wait to return again next year. Here's the scoop about the "Cedar Key Island Getaway Home". The sunsets are spectacular from the deck! We really enjoyed the unspoiled nature that surrounds the home. There are many birds that visit the marsh at different times of the day keeping the views ever changing. During high tide there are fish swimming below the deck. The pictures of the home are a true representation of what to expect. The colorful decorations throughout the home made us smile. Loved the pic's in the master bedroom. The beds are most comfortable and the interior throughout was super clean. We were so happy that dogs are allowed in the home which was very important to us. We enjoyed the Kayaks and bicycles during our stay. Taking a hot shower on the deck while watching the sunset was so relaxing after a day of kayaking. The owners are super responsive to questions and provided good suggestions of where to dine and shop. This vacation rental exceeded our expectations!! :>
Thank you, A&A
We needed a quiet break and Art and April's house was just what we needed. ! The house was charming, fun and colorful, and it was spacious and comfortable for hanging out. The deck was our favorite place to be, however, watching the myriad of birds coming from all directions throughout the day. I also enjoyed the breezeway underneath the house for lounging in the hotter parts of the day. Their home is so perfectly located and easily accessible to downtown on the bikes they provided. We explored downtown, the airstrip, the parks, etc. Our favorite times were riding bikes home at night in the cool evenings. We probably only used our car once the whole time. We also kayaked, using the kayaks they provided. Art and April were very helpful with dining and activity suggestions as well. So much fun, relaxation and activity all rolled into one visit. Definitely will be back!
One never knows what one is going to get when one books a home on VRBO. You will not be disappointed by Art & April's supremely private & perfect home & their hospitality. We were welcomed at every step & they were more than attentive to any problems that came up. Even ones that I didn't mention to them! Their competent Property Manager conveyed a small comment we'd made in passing about drinking glasses. Within days, NEW GLASSES arrived!
We saw Golden Eagles every day from the deck, along with ibis, herons, egrets & a million other birds I can't name. We even saw Bald Eagles from time to time. There was a flock of Storks that roosted in the tree next to the house. We came to feel that we were a part of the wildlife, not invading observers. The deck overlooks what has to be 100+ acres of marsh, which is amazing because...NO PEOPLE to screw up or disturb the wildlife!
We spent most of our 4 weeks there on that deck, sunning, bird-watching, eating, listening to music, reading, chatting, napping & even painting w/ watercolors. How many different colors of green can you see in the Marsh? 100's, 1,000's, more? Practically across the street on Gulf Blvd there's a Nature Walk, small beach, park & playground that we walked to almost every day. This helped out with all of the extra calories we were consuming at the many local restaurants. All awesome. I recommend the oysters! We were also able to walk back and forth to town easily, particularly as the island is flat! (it's about 1.5 miles away.)
The house was comfortable, well appointed, convenient to everything & private, a very rare package indeed. Though we ate out a lot, we did put the kitchen through it's paces a few times & of course ate on the deck!
For gardeners, there are one or two bald cypresses (trees) on the property, out of only two or three on the entire island! The neighbors we met were friendly.
We were sad to leave. We can't wait to return to Cedar Key & this particular rental. We were lucky to talk with the woman who maintains the property before we left. Her family is originally from Atsena Otie, an island off of Cedar Key which I think is no longer inhabited. She talked about "old Cedar Key" & what it was like. We felt so privileged to hear about Cedar Key from a true native, deeply rooted in this most remarkable community.
So truly, thanx Art & April. You have a singular property which I will covet for all my days! And thanx for coming to OUR aid after we left!
The housekeeper was there working when we arrived, doing all of the linens. She had probably cleaned the main areas of the floor and wiped down the bathroom sinks. However, we found crumbs under every item in the kitchen, mats of hair in the showers and behind the toilets in the bathrooms, and the home had probably not been dusted or the cracks cleaned of grime and trash in at least a year. The balcony has a lovely view of the marsh and we spent many hours watching the birds and the sunset - lovely! But don't touch the balcony railing as it is very rickety and dangerous! However, the high speed wifi worked as advertised and the interior furnishings were also as advertised. However, the bicycles are all broken and unusable. We did not check the kayaks but suspect the same. Overall, this is a house that started out, probably, as a lovely rental. It appears, though, that it has been rented out for a long time without any maintenance or true cleaning. We did enjoy walking from the house to various trails (Cemetery Trail) and in to town.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Property and amenities were just as described. Owners are wonderful to work with. Could not be more pleased.
Our family absolutely loved this property, not far from the beach and great views of the marsh. This is a great little town if you want to get away from the tourist traps of Florida. The owners were great at answering questions and the only complaint we had was the Mosquitos. So bring lots of repellant.

It's like time stood still in Cedar key! The island has a small, quaint 'downtown' that feels relaxed and friendly. Enjoy a scrumptious breakfast or keylime pie at a number of places, a cigar bar on Dock Street, the best chowder in the the world at Tonys, or live music with steamed clams and a juicy burger at the outdoor Big Deck. The most adorable store to visit is The Dilly Dally with mermaid trinkets, t-shirts and darling sundresses. Then cool off with ice cream and souvenier shopping at the shop next door. The local art stores provide wonderful pieces to view or purchase. The local hardware store has a helpful staff and a good selection of items. Stroll toward the town beach to cool off, or rent a golf cart (a lot of fun!) or a ride on a horsedrawn carriage. Hop on a boat tour (it's so neat to learn about the history of the area) or rent a boat for your own adventure. See dolphins frolicking in the water, birds everywhere and explore the little nearby islands. It is a photographer's delight - it is just gorgeous! Visit Kona Joe's for a cup of hot coffee or refreshing fruit smoothie and next door is a shop that makes lovely, local canvas bags for purchase. There are churches for worship, 2 little markets, take out pizza joints, and 5 mins up Rte 24 is a neat watering hole w/ an awesome sunset called The Tikki Bar. The local police is visible and friendly. The pier in town is terrific to relax on or fish off. Folks travel near and far to fish in Cedar Key!
