Book this if you want to get ripped off

  • 1 of 5

It's a nice enough property, sleeps 10 adults comfortably. We had a large group of people here and it was a pretty good time. Waterfall is great albeit a bit of a hike in the heat, with some unmaintained trail segments along the way.

First some background: One minor snag was that the A/C stopped working halfway through our stay. This is understandable because it was very humid out and we had the thing running constantly. It started working again after a few hours, but in the interim we left some windows and doors open to keep the place inhabitable. Airflow and all that.

So why the 1-star review? The property owner retained the entirety of our "refundable" security deposit, citing only trivial maintenance concerns as the rationale. This was a large sum of money which VRBO will for some reason not allow me to specify in this review. I assume if you attempt to book the place, you'll see the same amount.

Here is the complete list of reasons cited for retaining the deposit of multiple hundreds of dollars:

- Minor food splatter left in the microwave

- Lots of flies and mosquitoes in the house from having doors and windows open

- Small amount of trash left the fire pit: 1-2 cans & glass bottles

- Some furniture was moved short distances (within same room) and not put back

Now while I can understand anyone being annoyed by these issues, any reasonable person must agree that the resulting fee retention was disproportionately high. Each of these things can be resolved in a matter of mere minutes by an unskilled person with very little effort or resources.

Again, VBRO will not allow me to reference specific dollar amounts for some reason, but the headline here is that this property owner has clearly ripped us off and has now gone silent, not responding to any further inquiries for e.g. an accounting of exactly where all the deposit money went to.

Perfect location for those who love outdoor activities and privacy

  • 5 of 5

The place had a beautiful interior with all the amenities you needed, was perfectly secluded, and was within twenty minutes of everything we wanted to do. Perfect for a weekend of whitewater rafting or other state park activities
