Garfield, CO (also known as Monarch), elevation 9500', is six miles east of the Continental Divide surrounded by the San Isabel National Forest. Garfield originated as a mining town in the early 1800's. In the latter part of the century a fire swept through town leaving only 3 original buildings, The School House, a log cabin and the Courthouse/Jail which is now known as the Old Timer Cabin. Scattered throughout the area you will find foundations of original mining cabins from 200 years ago.

Beautiful little get away cabin in the woods!
We’ve stayed here 5 times now and we always have a great relaxing time. Definitely worth checking out!
Awesome!! Very clean, super convenient and the owners were great to work with.
The property was clean and well maintained. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would use this place again if we make it back to Colorado.
The 1st Chair Chalet was the perfect place for our family of 5 to enjoy spring break. It is close to Monarch with a very easy 5 minute drive. The hot tub is a perfect end to each day. We had everything we needed in the house and truly enjoyed every second.
We had a great stay!
Very clean, great location. We loved the hot tub and the wood burning stove. Well stocked with linens and kitchen items. We would stay here again!
Easy and comfortable stay
We had a very nice 3-night stay. Check-in/check-out were simple, the condo had everything we needed, and it was great being so close to the Monarch ski area. We will hopefully be back next year!
Great cabin in great location
The Hayes' 1st Chair Chalet is ideally situated in the closest town to Monarch Pass so it is a quick trip (2 miles?) to the base of the mountain. The cabin is rustic looking from the outside, and basically brand new inside, well equipped and comfortable for 6 with a nice deck overlooking a woodsy glade and burbling brook, great Buck wood stove, large hot tub, and convenient entryway for ski and pole and boot storage. Bruce is great to deal with over email and I would highly recommend his place.
Winter time, enjoy fresh tracks for days! One of the largest annual snow falls and small crowds pair to make the Monarch area a powder hound's paradise. For the more extreme, they have hike-to expert terrain and snowcat tours. Across the street is Monarch Snowmobile Tours and a national forest full of great high-alpine trails and roads. In the warm weather enjoy epic hikes, world-class mountain biking, award-winning Fishing, motorcycling, ATV, and Jeep tours. The 4X4 road starts here, maps provided. One of the nation's top Mountain Bike trails, The Monarch Crest Trail, as well the Monarch Crest Scenic Tramway, and the Great Divide Trail start at the top of the pass, 4 miles away. Less than an hour away are 5 Hot Springs resorts, a dozen whitewater rafting companies, numerous bike rentals, countless Galleries, 2 whitewater play parks, and a Super Wal-Mart, plus Live music, nightlife, Sports Bar, Movies and more.
