Visitors comments....

Puffin Cottage is a magnificent cottage right by the sea: you open the sitting room curtains and there you are looking out to sea!! It is cosy and really well appointed-everything spotlessly clean and offered with a generous spirit. You open a drawer in the kitchen and all the things you could possibly need are there. A garden that is dog proofed is also really handy. Loads of hot water towels and linen provided, books games TV and DVD, it has all the feel of a first class hotel.

Johnshaven is right on the coastal path so it is easy to walk a few miles for fresh fish or in the opposite direction to miles of sand at St Cyrus. For the more adventurous there are the Grampians with their peaks and lovely glen walks and further afield again there is Royal Deeside.

This is definitely one of the best cottages I have ever rented and I have rented a lot!!

...and another

'We both loved this idyllic cottage in a magic spot. I was hypnotised by the view of the sea, the ever changing picture...the terrific sunsets outside the window....Fantastic cottage - there is nothing we wanted for - a real home from home and so much attention to detail. Look out for the Dolphins we've seen them a number of times - I imagine the novelty will never wear off! Johnshaven is a lovely place!'

No extra charges for towels, linen, electricity, oil central heating, dogs or visiting friends and relatives! This deceptively spacious beach front cottage is ideal, both for a couple wanting a quiet and relaxing break, and a fun base for a family holiday. Situated in the picturesque fishing village of Johnshaven, between Aberdeen and Dundee, Puffin Cottage provides an ideal base for relaxing and also exploring.

Accommodation: All accommodation is on the ground floor. (Although we have an accessible but undeveloped 'Dolphin Spotting Deck' in the loft, complete with telescope and binoculars!)

Heating is free and provided by oil-fired central heating, a coal fire and an electric stove. All oil, electricity and linen is included in the price. The dining kitchen is newly refurbished and fully equipped, with a fan oven cooker, washer/dryer, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and a microwave. A fire blanket and hard wired smoke alarms are also included. (As are flasks, torch, portable barbecue, small fan heater and hot water bottles.) (Hopefully we have thought of everything! Let us know if we haven't!).

We now have WI-FI!

The good sized lounge overlooks the pebble beach and the view from the window provides constantly changing sea-scapes as you enjoy the comfort of two large 3 seater settees, set in front of a cosy coal fire. The bookcase contains leaflets on walking, fishing, horse riding and golf courses in the area

You can relax further in this room with TV and DVD Player,

A charming double bedroom overlooking the garden, provides a comfortable and restful environment. The second bedroom enjoys a beach view and is furnished with two single beds and an Ikea single sofa bed with comfortable mattress. This spacious room can also double as an ideal play area. The bathroom has been upgraded and has toilet, washbasin and an electric shower over the bath. Towels are provided free of charge.

Outside:Garden chairs are stored in the front Porch and can be used in the front garden area, to sit and have a cup of tea or glass of wine and watch for passing Dolphins. The area of grass on the seafront opposite also belongs to the cottage.

The large enclosed back garden provides a safe and secure area for small children. The local park backs onto the garden wall. Garden furniture in the back garden can be used for a lazy breakfast or a family barbecue in the evening.

Sand beaches at Montrose, St Cyrus and Lunan Bay.

The beach in Johnshaven is a pebble beach with lots of interesting rock pools to explore with the bandy nets from the cottage. Lots of driftwood lands up on the beach in Johnshaven and it's good fun to find an interesting piece to take home as a souvenir of your holiday. We also collect many pieces of colourful seaglass which washes up on the shore.

Nearby St Cyrus has a superb sandy beach and is an ideal place for children and dogs to get rid of excess energy. You always seem to have the beach almost to yourself no matter what time of year you visit. Again lots of driftwood washed up,

Montrose beach is sandy and has the added attraction of the Splash paddling pool and play area for children.. Cheeky Monkeys indoor play area is ideal for wet days.

Lunan Bay just a little further south of Montrose is another sandy beach which has been much enjoyed by our visitors.

Have a look at our visitors comments in our reviews to see which beach has been most enjoyed.

About Mrs Lindsey Wardle

We are Lindsey and Chris Wardle. We live at the opposite end of Johnshaven to Puffin Cottage and are only minutes away if help is required. We live with our two Border Terriers, Cass and Midge and a very relaxed black cat called Gibson.

We think that we have provided everything in the cottage that would lead to an enjoyable holiday and are always open to further suggestions

Mrs Lindsey Wardle purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Mrs Lindsey Wardle chose Johnshaven

You can see from our reviews (and 6 visitors books in the cottage) that people love to come back to Puffin Cottage, year after year. You can tour from the cottage, look up relatives, ramble or just chill in the peace of the village.

Our guests love the friendliness of the village with complete strangers saying hello, giving a friendly nod or admiring your dog.

We have taken 3 well behaved dogs many times and are always surprised by the level of cleanliness in the cottage when they leave with their owners.

There are miles of good doggy walks around the village and along the cost towards nearby villages. St Cyrus beach has miles of golden sands and ideal for children and dogs to let off steam.

Johnshaven gives you the chance to have a great weeks holiday without leaving the village, Meals available at The Anchor, (Gary and Jan) Drinks at The Ship, (Bobby and Ed) and our very well stocked shop, Johnshaven Stores (Ewan and Kate) supplies everything that you would need.

What makes this cottage unique

Puffin Cottage has the advantage of having an enclosed garden, front and back with a tall side gate which makes the rear garden very safe and secure for children and dogs.

Being right down at the seaside, means that you can sit in the lounge and watch the constantly changing seascapes.

We have a telescope and binoculars upstairs in our undeveloped loft which has two Velux windows, ideal for doing a bit of bird and dolphin watching.

There is a seat to the front of the cottage where you can sit and read or enjoy a glass of wine in the evening. There are also two picnic areas in the garden, one with a table and 4 chairs near the back door and another picnic bench with fitted benches at the rear of the garden.

There is a very well equipped children's play are at the back of the large park behind the cottage. There are also tennis courts and a putting green.

Our Jewel in the crown in Johnshaven is The Anchor Hotel where you can have delicious food both downstairs in the bar (doggies allowed downstairs) and in the comfortable upstairs restaurant. After your meal of course you can go and sit in an alcove beside the stove, over at The Ship Inn and enjoy a relaxing drink in the very friendly pub.

In nearby Gourdon 3 miles away, we have an award winning Fish and Chip Restaurant..

Inverbervie just 4 miles away has an excellent Chinese and Indian Takeaways.

Inverbervie has a good sized Co-op, a chemist and a bakers.

Montrose 10 miles, has a Tesco, Co-op, Lidl's, Boots and many more High Street stores.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have had a truly wonderful weekend at Puffin Cottage - excellent accommodation - homely and very comfortable. Enjoyed the fantastic views and the doggy walks. The visits to St Cyrus Nature Reserve and then on to Lunan Bay were outstanding. The beautiful sunny day added to the spectacular views. we thoroughly enjoyed the good food at The Anchor hotel. Thanks to Chris for his warm friendly and helpful welcome. This has been our first visit and will definitely not be our last, to Puffin Cottage. Many thanks to you both for your hospitality extended to us during our stay!

Lovely Holiday Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We received a very warm welcome from Lyndsay and Chris. A lovely warm and cosy {Large} cottage on the sea front with everything you would need in a home away from home {apart from a tumble dryer}. Bearing in mind we had nice weather i had our washing out on the line to dry so can't complain. Lovely walks with our dog Spangle and a nice warm cottage to come home to after our long walks. Especially liked the fact that there was plenty cleaning products to tidy up after ourselves and plenty condiments {salt. pepper, oil, teabags, coffee etc.....} We've stayed in many holiday homes all over Scotland and always take our own supplies with us so was a very nice touch to have everything at hand. Many Thanks Lyndsay & Chris for letting us stay in your lovely holiday home by the sea.

Owner's Response: Delighted you and Spangle enjoyed your stay in Puffin and Johnshaven. It is such an ideal spot for dogs to enjoy an amazing holiday. Most don't want to go home at the end of their stay! We have had a couple of washer dryers fitted in the last few years but they don't seem to stand the pace so last year we opted for a washer only and as you say a good washing line, hot radiators and a large indoor clothes airer soon take care of a holiday wash. Looking forward to seeing you again soon.

A little piece of paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Have just spent a week at Puffin cottage - it was idyllic! Fabulous sea views, cosy cottage (everything you need is available), dog friendly, lovely welcome from the owners (Chris & Lindsey) with advice on sightseeing & good walks/beaches. Chris has marked areas of interest on an AA map which is really useful. Village pub has really good food and is very welcoming. Walked along the seafront to the next village - lovely. Visited Lunnan bay which is a lovely sandy beach - didn't manage to visit Cyrus beach but we were told that this is also a lovely beach. Thanks Chris & Lindsey for sharing your lovely holiday let & piece of paradise with us.

Relaxing break

  • 5 of 5

What a fantastic cottage in a wonderful setting. The cottage is spotless and cosy. Everything that you might need is provided for, both for human and dogs. The cottage is ideal for coastal walks. The views from the cottage are perfect for spotting birds and sea life. Unfortunately the dolphins were in short supply ! The locals are friendly and welcoming. You can get beautiful food in the Anchor Inn which is only a five minute walk from the cottage.

I would recommend Puffin Cottage to anyone looking for some time out in a great location with all your needs catered for, and you don't pay any extra for your furry friends !!.

Owner's Response: We are so glad that you enjoyed your 2nd visit to Puffin Cottage. The dolphins appeared two days after you left, so hopefully better luck next time. I will pass on your comments to Gary, the chef at the Anchor, he will be delighted!

Puffin Cottage - A perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Puffin Cottage is everything it is said to be. The cottage was very clean, well equipped and our welcome from Chris and Lindsey warm and friendly. If you want a holiday with your pets this is the place to come. Miles of interesting walking straight from the door, two pubs which are dog friendly, excellent food in one of them and a very well stocked village store. Wander along the harbour to watch the lobsters being landed and go to the pub and order one for your evening meal.

Once you have arrived in this beautiful fishing village there is no need to get in the car again until you leave. You can spend hours weather watching from the warmth of the cottage and if you are lucky you will even see the dolphins.

If, however, you want to wander further afield visit Gourdon for fish and chips or to buy 'smokies' from the smokery, A trip to Dunnottar Castle or Howe of the Mearns via the scenic routes are interesting outings, take a picnic and enjoy the scenery.

We will definately be revisiting Puffin Cottage and would highly recommend it as a perfect holiday venue.

As you say, the cottage and village are very dog friendly with many walks in either direction along the coast. We agree that it is so handy to have really good food available in the village,as it makes for a more relaxing holiday, with lots of 'no cook' nights. Looking forward to seeing you on your next visit. Lindsey and Chris
