Ripple Lodge: A Family Lodge on Long Lake since 1928.

Bedrooms 9
Space 3,800 sq. ft.
Property type lodge
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

3 Houses & 2 Cabins: 9+ Bedrooms, 5 Bathrooms, 2 Kitchens & a Beach - Sleeps 20+

Ripple Lodge is a one-of-a-kind set of four houses and two cabins - only five of which we typically rent to ONE Party in the Summer, as well as possibly renting our various spaces to multiple parties during the Spring & Fall. Being located on about one acre of beautifully wooded land on the N.E. corner of Long Lake and having over 275 feet of lake frontage and an expansive sandy beach ideal for the kids, Ripple Lodge still manages to retain its charm and atmosphere from the 1920's: the perfect spot to escape from the frantic pace and relax in comfort and seclusion, and a great place for a family reunion.

During the late Spring, Summer and early Fall - the dining house and charming white cabin are added on to the Big House, blue cabin and boat house that are available year-round. Our outdoor wood furnace (see last picture) insures that you never run out of hot water well as delivering in-floor heat to the bathrooms, and hot water baseboard heat elsewhere in the Big house & Blue Cabin.

Being central to everything the Big House also has the majority of the bedrooms(5+), & two and a half luxurious bathrooms, not to mention a large living room w/Fireplace! When you add in the other 4 buildings that makes for more than sufficient space into which large family groups fit comfortably. The porch on the West side of the Big House is a perfect spot for watching sunsets over the lake, as too are the porches on the dining house and, most particularly, the one on the boat house which is right on the water's edge.

Speaking of 'lake' - do note the clarity of Long Lake's spring-fed water, much better than many other lakes in the area! Historically a bass lake, one is more likely to enjoy walleye after spending a night trolling, though perch and other small fry are out there. The setting couldn't be better what with the sandbar, the plenitude of birds (Loons, an eagle, a crane, ducks and geese, and many smaller birds, finches), towering trees, fresh air and delicious well water (please, pretty please! - don't bring plastic water bottles!), not to mention a great view of the Milky Way - the most natural of settings - Pure Michigan: it's right here.

If you are looking for something unique, not the typical modern hoopla but charm that goes back to 1928 - and lots of space, and lots of privacy, plenty of room for kids on the beach front, a large Dining Room in the Dining house (seats 16+), etc. - Ripple Lodge is it. We are particular about to whom we rent and have a list of 'rules' that make instant bookings impractical, moreover the price varies according to the number of adults, teenagers and kid overs 5, something that home-away's sites (VRBO, etc.) cannot deal with - so please BEWARE the Book Now feature, I prefer that you book the lodge directly through me - Call if you have any questions (231) 944 5755.

Of course we have a Verizon WiFi hot spot, fully stocked kitchens, a dock and buoys, but bring or rent your own boat(s), the boat launch is right across the lake, about 1 mile away. There's a TV but no reception out here, so bring your favorite DVDs if you wish.

Spring, Fall and Winter offer the utmost in quiet and affordability, and you might be amazed at seeing the ice freeze around Christmas - as winter can be serene as well as brutal. Crystal Mountain Ski resort is 28 miles away offering generally impressive snow conditions. Lodging is limited to about 8 adults and 6 kids once the thermometer dives below the freezing point.

Ripple Lodge is ready and we do advise that you book far in advance, particularly if you desire a week during the Summer Peak Season. If you book direct you won't have the 60 day cancellation with full refund offered by the website, rather monies are only returned IF I am able to rent the week to another party--normally the Summers are fully booked 6-12 months in advance! My policy is 1/3 down, 1/3 3 months out and the final 1/3 on arrival. It's much easier to book for the Fall or early Spring.

About Phillip Lundberg

My wife and I bought out my cousins a few years back and have been busy fixing up 'the lodge' to make it one of the best spots on Long Lake for large family reunions. For now Ripple Lodge is a rental business as well as our home, in 5 or so years it may only become available for repeat customers who know and appreciate its unique virtues.

Phillip Lundberg purchased this lodge in 1928

Why Phillip Lundberg chose Northern Michigan

The best of the old and the new - the charm from almost 100 years is still evident, along with lots of new ideas and, not to forget: a great location on the NE corner of Long Lake: Ripple Lodge - the place to be.

What makes this lodge unique

Having 3 houses and 2 cabins means that there's lots of spaces for families to spread out: So join the crowd down on the beach or be alone in your own house or cabin.

Dinners tend to run late - 9PM? - and getting up late after a long refreshing sleep happens quite regularly, it's because the air Up North is so much better than downstate...

Our Boat House really is special--the only one of its kind that you will find on the entire lake! - one that includes a porch and family room (520 sq. ft.) right on the lakefront where you can watch your kids on our private beach (see picasaweb pics!). Surrounded by woods at the end of a 1 mile dirt road, get away from the crowds and enjoy the seclusion. The perfect spot for large family reunions or collegiate symposiums.

Perfect Labor Day Weekend

  • 5 of 5

Ripple Lodge is the perfect place in Michigan. We spent the Labor Day weekend at this beautiful place: perfect to relax, beautiful, perfect for outdoor activities.

You have everything you need: beautiful cabins, beautiful beach, fully equipped kitchen, nice and friendly owner who wants to make sure your stay is just perfect.

We'll be back .

Unique Historic Cabins and Lodge--Perfect Summer Get-Away

  • 5 of 5

I can't express how much I love this place. To me, it's the perfect summer vacation spot for large extended families and friends--especially if you have children. The beach is easy to get to, and there aren't dangerous, steep stairs to navigate to get to the beach. The cabins and lodge are all rustic so you don't have to demand that children be super careful with all their surroundings--for example there's very little carpeting etc.

I personally love the historic charm of the place--it really feels like you've gone back in time. The screened in porches in the dinning hall and the boat house have great views of the water. The little cabins are super charming and fun to stay in. The dining hall is nice because you can seat such a large group of people together. Long lake is perfect for boating especially since there are cute little islands that you can explore. Another aspect that is nice about this place is the way it is surrounded by tall trees, so you are always in a cool breeze rather than baking in the sun--unless you want to go down by the water. There is also a nearby park that you can walk to which is great for a daily hike.

Because this place is so large, it is perfect for a big group. If I had the opportunity, I would return here every year with my family because I love the experience so much. The only critique that I can write is that the place is a little rustic, so renters should not expect the most updated decor or amenities (although there are new bathrooms, one new kitchen, and new washer, dryer etc.). But to me, this just adds to the historic charm. I wouldn't want it any other way.

Great way to enjoy a family reunion!

  • 5 of 5

Our host was very friendly & helpful. The fact that he resides on the property, made our visit that much more enjoyable. We have four families, so each was able to have their own cabin/house & not only enjoy each other, but have their privacy as well.

Building a fire on the beach at night was an added bonus & enabled us to tell family stories as we came together for this much needed reunion.

Ripple Lodge is now a memory that we all will cherish.

Owner's Response: Ripple Lodge has always been a Family oriented vacation spot where 3 or more generations can gather comfortably and enjoy the lake, the sun and the stars. It was wonderful to be accepted into the gathering and do my part to make everyone feel at home - and of course I also have my own spot and kitchen as we all need a space into which one may retreat as the situation warrants. My wife & I look forward to facilitating family gatherings in the years to come, though the "book now" new feature of Vacation Rentals (/vrbo) is not our preferred method of bookings, something with a bit more back and forth communication I think best to insure a good fit for a beautiful vacation.

Awesome Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect setting for our large family reunion. Beautiful lake views, lots of space so that you never felt cramped and it was very clean. The owner was very responsive before we got there answering questions and very helpful while we were there. There are plenty of things to do in Traverse City and the areas close like Glen Arbor. The location is ideal for just relaxing with a wonderful deck, beach, boat house to hang out in & two nice fire pits. It was an ideal vacation/family reunion.

Owner's Response: This year we have added a dishwasher and new double oven stove to the dining house, not to mention rewiring the dining house, white cabin and boat house. The most important feature, however, will remain our beautiful setting on Long Lake, the fresh air and delicious water that flows from out of our well. We very much appreciate those customers who help make Ripple Lodge a great place for family reunions.

Ripple Lodge Visit Summer 2013

  • 4 of 5

Our family (6 adults, 3 children, l dog!) stayed a week at Ripple Lodge. It was terrific! The cottages were clean, no shortage of hot water, with comfortable beds and lots of them as we were a smaller group. Lots of dry firewood provided for the fireplaces and the "fire pit" on the deck which was our place for story telling and smores. We all appreciated the cottage atmosphere with lots of easy walking in beautiful surroundings of mature trees and meadows. The use of the motorboat was a bonus. The location could not have been better as we were a few minutes from groceries, Traverse City, Lake Michigan beaches, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Leland (Fishtown)and plenty more activities that we will explore next time. Great sunsets. Phillip (owner) was available if needed and promptly returned our security deposit. It was a fun filled family week! We will recommend this to our friends and look forward to returning. Paula and John, London, Ontario

Owner's Response: It is always a pleasure to see renters who appreciate the unique charm that Ripple Lodge offers. I am hoping that more Canadians cross the border and experience all that Northern Michigan has to offer.

Rustic Private Resort

  • 5 of 5

Ripple Lodge felt like home as soon as we arrived, from the furnished bedrooms and kitchens to the welcoming owners. The Lodge is made up of several buildings, so my extended family was never tripping over itself. We brought our bikes (watch out for the hills!) and an inflatable boat--pretty much everything else we needed was there. The beach was totally private (we played all day and had campfires at night on the beach), and the beach house was right there (my nephew chose to sleep in it all weekend). There were several large gathering areas, and we all had the privacy we needed as well. We brought our dogs, who were in heaven (they're part of the family, after all!). We were minutes away from Traverse City and the sand dunes, and when we could tear ourselves away from the lodge, we did go visit. We'll definitely be back, and I plan to look into it for my son's Cub Scout pack--it would be perfect.
