About Jim Casey
Caryn and Jim Casey have been married for 33 years (as of 2015). We have two grown daughters, a small dog and two grand-dogs. We love Lindstrom and being at the lake as a contrast to our busy lives in Burbank, CA. Jim has a background in architecture and sells real estate in California.
Jim Casey purchased this House in 1999
Why Jim Casey chose Lindstrom
It was love at first sight. We found the house quite by accident. Jim was doing research comparing different real estate websites back in 1999 for a seminar he was giving to a real estate board in Florida. Jim was an internationally recognized technology speaker and trainer in the real estate industry just as the internet and digital technology was changing the real estate business. Our dream house scenario was an older home with wrap around porches on a lake and within 45 minutes of the Twin Cities. Fridhem popped up on his computer screen and the family jumped in the car and drove to the property more out of curiosity than anything else. When we walked up the front sidewalk we were captivated. Because of the original condition of the home and the unfinished attic we knew we could make this a special home for our family and for our retirement (you can live entirely on the first floor if necessary). That same year our two daughters announced their dreams of acting so we packed them up and took them to Burbank to attend school and audition for television and film. Jim spent over a year remodeling the home and commuting back and forth to California until the whole family returned for summer vacation. We never imagined we'd be turning the house into a vacation rental, but it has been a wonderful experience for us sharing the house and still getting to enjoy it throughout the year.
What makes this House unique
Walk to downtown on our tree lined street and enjoy privacy and incredible views of the lake from our large deck. The house is large and yet features lots of little, intimate spaces to congregate or enjoy some alone time. Live in a historic home with all the amenities you'd expect from a 5 star hotel including an exercise room, free WIFI and a smart TV for your Netflix and Amazon Prime viewing pleasure. With a local winery, many restaurants, antique shopping, nearby trails, tennis courts and golf, not to mention the wonderful lake and trophy fishing, everyone can find something to pass the time. Fridhem is a local treasure which everyone in the community has heard stories about in its over 100 year history. We purposely do NOT rent the house for large events like weddings because we feel it is best for family get togethers and quiet vacations. Our friendly neighbors are there when you need them, but will give you your privacy. We hope you will treat them with the same friendly respect!

Wonderful and cozy
We, a group of 7, stayed here extremely comfortably. There were no concerns. Everything was well laid out and even labeled. Everything one could need was provided. It was comfortable, cozy and clean also very spacious.
We went on a boat ride down the Sioux River? in Taylor Falls, went to a winery, and a local coffee shop. It was a great weekend. Thank you for sharing your home. The owner was extremely responsive and easy to work with. We will definitely return with our children to enjoy the lake and out doors activities on the lake.
Abby, we are so glad you enjoyed your visit! The boat ride was down the St. Croix River. Looks like you took in a lot in just a few days. Please come back and explore more of what the area has to offer!
Comfortable, cottage home for fun family times
This cottage was the perfect setting for our family reunion. So great to have three families and a grandmother all in one place, for meals, games, movie-watching, dog walks and conversation.
We enjoyed our stay and would love to return.
Beautiful house and Location
Beautiful house and great location! We enjoyed our stay and explored the surrounding area of Lindstrom and St. Croix Falls, etc. Jim was very thorough and easy to work with. We would recommend this quaint house for anyone looking for a relaxing getaway!
We are so glad you enjoyed your weekend. Please stay with us again!

Lovely but old vacation home for 8 adults max.
We are a group of professional siblings who rented the cabin for a reunion week in August, and did have a wonderful vacation. Lindstrom is just idyllic for an easy get-together with folks coming from MSP or MN. My sister got married at Panola Gardens, which was a gorgeous venue. We rented nearby Beach Park for a reception afterwards. Pluses: the location (walkable to downtown, 2 blocks from a sandy beach for swimming), the kitchen well-appointed (nice pans, could use a few more; frig is failing, leaking water). Downside: In no way does this place sleep 14. There are 4 bedrooms with 4 beds, and one VERY uncomfortable air mattress. Only one bedroom is on the main floor. Linens and pillows are in sad condition. The air conditioning leaves some rooms freezing and some hot. Finally, it is a very old house that is extremely well used (rented something like 200 times in the last 4-5 years), so shows a lot of wear and tear. The outdoor photos must've been taken 20 years ago, after the last paint job. There were several things that the cleaners noted after our visit that I SWEAR were not our doing, for which the owner wanted to retain our entire damage deposit, so I would certainly advise taking photos of anything that is stained or wobbly or about to break. (Good luck with that -- it's a very well-used house so you expect some marks/wear-and-tear, but if you don't document them you may end up paying.) In order to keep the place from falling apart, there is a list of rules that reads like an OCD-person's-handbook (understandable but a bit funny): NEVER open the windows, NEVER open the blinds, NEVER move a stick of furniture. I would add NEVER be outside after 9 pm (even if you're an alcohol-free respectful group of docs and lawyers) or you'll get reported by the neighbors, who have an ax to grind about this being a rental. Pontoon rentals are no longer available from Frankie's. Overall, still a wonderful vacation, but we had left the house in what I felt was wonderful condition, all towels washed, all food cleared out, etc. etc. and were incredulous when we were told he was keeping our damage deposit. We compromised, but it was quite unpleasant. We've rented a newer bigger place for next year.
Imagine my surprise seeing this review after the email you sent me the day after your departure:
"Hi, Jim. Thanks again for a wonderful vacation at your Lindstrom property... I will post an excellent review once I hear back from you. I won't detail the upkeep issues -- I just wanted you to know these things."
I'm sorry that after discovering considerable staining on the carpet and furniture as well as permanent damage to our dining room table we withheld $50 from your damage deposit. We also overlooked the noise complaint we received from our neighbors assuming THEY were being unreasonable. You are only the second group we've received a noise complaint about.
Yes our home is approaching its 120 year mark and in keeping with the original wood siding it requires constant and almost surgical repair. As an historical home we also cannot replace windows and siding with more contemporary imitations. We do our best to keep up.
Finally, the number of people a home sleeps is recommended by the VacationRentals.com website based on the number and square footage of the bedrooms NOT the number of beds. Before anyone rents our home we send them our 26 page HomeBook which includes floor plans, photos of every single room and a description of the number and sizes of all the beds. I'm sorry if you missed looking at that. I believe you also missed the updated location for pontoon rentals that we emailed you a month before your arrival.
We think after 200 plus rentals and a 5 star rating, the vast majority of our guests have enjoyed their stays and many of them are annual repeat guests.
I hope you find another property that suits your group better,
Swim off the dock out to the swim raft or take the little ones a block down the street to the town beach with swingsets and playground. There's plenty of pizza places, Chinese food, a Sports Bar and grocery stores in the immediate area. Dairy Queen is a short walk from the house. Forest Lake is only 11 miles west and features chain restaurants, Cub Foods and a movie theater. Fishing licenses, rods and live bait are available just a few minutes away at Frankie's Bait and Marine in Chisago City. Jump in the car and go 11 miles east to Taylors Falls for more restaurants, quaint shops and a Scenic Paddleboat ride down the St. Croix River. There's plenty of hiking and scenic views on both the Minnesota and Wisconsin sides of the St. Croix river. On your way to or from Taylors Falls make sure to check out the live Buffalo at Eichten's Cheese & Bison Store and the Franconia Sculpture Garden. The area features miles of bike trails and hiking as well as a waterslide and Go Karts at Wild Mountain Resort about 7 miles north of Taylors Falls. Downhill and Cross Country Skiing make this a hot spot in the winter months too! Golfers! There's "18 Holes of Pure Playable Fun" just 2 minutes from the house at The Chisago Lakes Public Golf Course. More restaurants and antique shopping are 27 miles south in historic Stillwater. You'll love all the little shops and candy store. Don't forget the Mall of America (50 miles) and all the attractions of Downtown Minneapolis (40 miles) and St. Paul (37 miles) less than an hour away. The Minneapolis Airport (MSP) is 45 minutes away.
