About the property

Quaint Beachfront Cottage Minutes from Seattle

Bud and Joan welcome you to their private, no bank waterfront, two-bedroom, two bath, home, located on the first bay on rural Camano Island, Washington, USA; a nice drive, about 60 minutes north of Seattle. No ferry, no lines. Relax the moment you arrive.

Enjoy the Outdoors Every Waking Moment

Enjoy a pleasant beachside landscaping that blends into the sand and driftwood, complete with a cutting herb garden for your culinary experiments. Besides the kitchen there is a large briquette barbeque plus a private bonfire pit on the beach for roasting marshmallows. Beautiful sherbet sunsets at dusk make way to stars that light up a dark sky. It’s captivating.

A Beach Experience Right Outside. A few strides across the lawn and you’re at the waters edge. You can simply sit and sip your favorite beverage on the viewing deck or be more adventurous and launch the paddle board, swim to the raft, or try one of our “floaty” things in water that is often unbelievably bathtub warm. For birds, the bay is an important food rich stopover estuary in Puget Sound: owned by the Nature Conservancy. You can use our high quality “glasses” to spot birds and then identify them in our bird book library. (Well over 100 different species have been seen from the beach.) The thrill of walking among many of the smaller migrating birds, as you stroll the flats at low tide, brings a new meaning to communing with nature.

Generous Soothing Space Sleeps Six

Open space for gathering, eating and relaxing together with two private bedrooms, it’s perfect for families or couples. Each bedroom sleeps two with a first class, convertible couch for another two. It’s decorated in a comfortable and cozy style,

You can also relax in a library alcove with a thoughtful selection of books, bask in the sun-room or relish the view in a pair of most comfortable rocking club chairs next to the wood stove.

A Kitchen for the Weekend Gourmand efficiently fitted out with all the usual and then some. From a chain mail oyster shucking glove to a bag of tea candles for romantic dining. We’ve tried to think of everything you will need to enhance your stay. Nearby local farm markets stock everything from farm fresh organic vegetables, boutique cheese, grass fed beef and much more. We have developed a shopping map for all our favorite specialty food stores, stalls and farms nearby, waiting for your exploration.

Why Bud and Joan Searle chose Camano Island

We first choose Camano Island because accessing without a ferry made perfect sense. Then it became a puzzle to find the neighborhood that fitted in with our ideals. Those ideals were honed over many years, living on the beach in small old fashioned, dead end road, beach communities. We spent weeks looking at virtually every beach on Camano and when we found Sundin Beach it took us literally 2 seconds to decide we had found the best spot. As luck sometimes has it, we stumbled upon the Cottage two days before it was officially going on the market and made the decision to buy in less than five minutes. Clearly, we knew what we were looking for and and the idea we had found.

What makes this cottage unique

The Cottage was originally a summer 'camp' for a Everett business man: kitchen, bathroom and bedroom, (the boys slept outside in tents) Later the bedroom wing was added with the second bathroom in between giving each bedroom privacy. Both bedrooms were thoughtfully given outside doors so early risers could go for a walk without disturbing others.

The Cottage is small, about 1200 square feet, but nicely divided into small gathering areas: sun porch, library, living room and large old library 'dining' table. These small gathering spaces make it seem much more spacious. Likewise, outside there are numerous places to gather and enjoy the view and each other.

Sundin Beach is on Livingston Bay, a estuary, and important feeding stop for migrating birds. As you can imagine, the birding can be good to outstanding. The 12 foot tides cause the estuary to run dry at low tide which on its return makes for amazingly warm water on hot summer days.

Our favorite time is late fall and winter when we can go up and enjoy each other and the near empty beach, there are only six full time residents. Come back from a brisk beach walk to a blazing wood stove, good book...well you get the picture.

Cute beach house with great views

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Sundin Beach Cottage! Was a cute house right on the beach. Lots of places to sit and enjoy the view, both inside and out. We enjoyed sitting out on the little floating dock and soaking in the sun as well. The beach was pretty easy to walk along even at high tide. Bud and Joan were very helpful, and the cottage was well stocked with anything you could need. They do allow dogs, but if you own a hound like I do, just be aware that there are a lot of rabbits in the area (we saw a couple, and it drove my dog a little crazy). I had family on Camano to visit, but if you're new to the area, Bud and Joan left a long list of places to visit or things to do on the island or in Stanwood. Would definitely stay here again!

Clean, comfortable and quiet

  • 5 of 5

Its a great, tucked away place that is quiet and comfortable. Fully stocked and I loved how the kitchen window above the sink was wide and opened up to flowers. We really enjoyed how comfortable the king bed is! My husband was bedridden with an injury, so it was important for his recovery. The only heads up, which does not reflect on Ownership, would be the size of the showers (and there are no tubs). If you are a big or tall person, the showers are not for you. Very narrow to navigate. Otherwise they provide all soap, shampoo, etc as well as let us have a few extra hours before check-out. Very nice. Thank you for sharing!

30th Anniversary Magical Get-Away

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent 6 amazing nights at Sundin Cottage. 70 degree weather with cool fall mornings and warm afternoons reading on the beach and watching the Osprey's dive. We walked the beach each day and found agates and other beautiful stones, cocktails each night under the umbrella before cooking and eating in every single night because we couldn't bear to leave, not to mention the outstandingly equipped kitchen. The cottage is one of only a handful on a quiet lane and we met many of the neighbors and heard lots of history of this quaint location. Picked piles of blackberries just up the hill, slept like babes -- Hope to be back.

Some guests are content to hang out under the umbrella on the viewing deck and watch the beach unfold. Others are all over the beach experience which is almost unlimited. Great beach walks, agates, shells and surprises at every new tide line. The water is often very warm after coming in across the heated beach and even grandparents have been known to swim to the raft. There is a paddle board and numerous; floaty things to play with. If you bring your own kayak launch right there and explore some very interesting and remote areas within the bay only reachable by small boat. The beach has a gentle slope and is kid freindly. Thankfully no one has a jet ski at our beach so we avoid the distracting commotion so common elsewhere. There is excellent birding opportunity right from the viewing deck; glasses and books are provided.

Nearby Stanwood has all the benefits of a small town. Camano Island is noted for its artisans, many of which have open studios and Chihuly former school, Pilchuck Glass is nearby. There is one winery as of this writing and a great wine shop. Golf, boat rental, hiking, biking and sightseeing are all enjoyed nearby. Slightly further a field are the towns of Conway and LaConner with some fabulous restaurants, boutique shopping, antiquing and the famous North West Museum of Modern Art. We have a map and listing of all these locations and more. We have arrangements with some for a discount for our guests.
