The Black Hills are often under estimated because of the word “hills”. This fact becomes apparent as you wind your way up hairpin turns high up on Edelweiss Mountain. The 1500 sq. ft. 3 bedroom mountain cabin is located at 5600 ft. above sea level in the heart of the Black Hills and surrounded by National Forest. Located within minutes of Pactola Lake, Sheridan Lake, and the Mickelson & Centennial Trails.
The perfect area for boating, hunting, fishing, hiking, rock climbing, golfing, skiing, snowmobiling, mountain biking, off-roading and sightseeing - Minutes from Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument and Custer State Park. This mountain retreat is truly in the heart of the Hills, hidden away from, but easily accessible to all Black Hills attractions.
Approximately 25 miles west of Rapid City, SD. (Airport 14 miles east of Rapid City)
Please note that there are no lake-front properties in the Black Hills. The picture provided shows Pactola Reservoir which is close by but not visible from the cabin.

About Dean and Patricia Farr
My wife and I both grew up in South Dakota near Sioux Falls. We attended college at Augustana College. I have a business degree and my wife an education degree. We spent time in Germany while I was in the Army. Following that time my wife taught school and I worked for General Mills in Minneapolis and then in West Chicago IL. We raised our two daughters in IL. We also started our own business there. We are now retired and recently moved to northern Wisconsin where we are full time caretakers for daughter's family lake home. We are again South Dakota residents and rent our Black Hills House while we are care-taking in Wisconsin. We feel fortunate to have 2 beautiful places to spend our retirement.
Dean and Patricia Farr purchased this Cabin in 2000
Why Dean and Patricia Farr chose Mount Rushmore
This property was built by my uncle and his wife as a vacation home. Our family often visited and loved the Black Hills. We told Uncle Harvey that if and when he was ready to sell the property to keep us in mind. He did so and we are now the proud owners of his cabin in the Black Hills. Harvey and his wife Mildred are gone now but we keep a picture of him to remind us of the great experiences and scenery he provided our family.
What makes this Cabin unique
We love the Black Hills. Our home gives us a peaceful get-a-way and is located centrally to all the attractions the Black Hills has to offer. We never run out of things to do or see. When we get tired from all the activity we come back and enjoy pleasant quite times resting and relaxing on the deck or next to the fireplace. Because we are built into the side of the mountain the tall pines that surround us makes one feel like they are living in tree house. We often see deer, wild turkeys, and numerous varieties of birds. We have seen cougars, bobcats, coyotes and mountain sheep nearby (not too close - just nearby). We love going to Custer State Park and driving the wildlife loop where you see buffalo, pronghorn, prairie dogs, deer, wild burros and more.

Quite comfortable lodging, but a bit off the beaten path
We spent a week in the Black Hills area in conjunction with a trip to see the eclipse in late August. The cabin has all the essentials and a very nice deck to have breakfast on and to relax on in the evening. We arrived late on a Saturday evening to find no sheets on the beds, which was rather disappointing, although the owner states this was an anomaly.
Although the cabin was comfortable, it is several miles from the main road down a gravel road which is bumpy and dusty. It is also a bit of a hike to go out for dinner and you are half an hour or more north of most of the places you will want to visit. On the plus side, most of the rentals that are closer to the action are considerably more expensive. Dining in the area is pretty basic. An exception are the restaurants in the Lodges in Custer State Park which serve very nice meals.
Secluded yet close to all the Black Hills has to offer
This great cabin was perfect for our family of five. The house was very clean and stocked with all the essentials. The layout worked really well with one bedroom downstairs (my daughter loved the Native American Princess room) and two upstairs. Relaxing on the deck after a day jam-packed with activities was a highlight for the parents. The location was convenient to Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Hot Springs, Rapid City and only 1.5 hours from Badlands. The kids loved the drive each day back to the cabin as we saw loads of whitetail and mule deer and counted free-ranging cattle (#109 was our favorite). This home was our third time renting through HomeAway and each time our expectations have been exceeded. The owners are extremely easy to communicate with and provided tons of great suggestions on things to see & do. I highly recommend this home.
Great Place to Stay
We had a great time staying at this property. It was well maintained and clean. We very much enjoyed coming back to the home after a long day of visiting the attractions in the area. It was nice to relax on the wonderful deck and enjoy the scenery and wildlife. It's very quiet and peaceful at this property. WE would highly recommend this home for those looking for a nice quiet place in the mountains that is still close to all of the local attractions.
Very clean and comfortable. A little far from attractions but worth it.
They do monitor your usage of wifi and water. Good area for the kids to explore while dinner was cooking. A bit off the beaten path, that we liked. Peaceful place
Beautiful homestead in the Black Hills
We stayed in the Black Hills for the Sturgis Rally. It was a nice place and peaceful getaway. The only complaint we have is the 3 mile gravel road with tight turns getting to the home. Overall great place making memories with friends!
Great get away!! Had family of 8 and were glad to have comfortable place to come to after long day!
Was a very nice property. Needed a little updating but clean and comfortable. Near to a lot of vacation spots. Not many places for kids to play on property but we didn't spend any days just at the property so didn't effect us that much! Well stocked cabin and found everything very accessible. We love the Black Hills and really enjoyed the Badlands!!
