The Black Hills are often under estimated because of the word “hills”. This fact becomes apparent as you wind your way up hairpin turns high up on Edelweiss Mountain. The 1500 sq. ft. 3 bedroom mountain cabin is located at 5600 ft. above sea level in the heart of the Black Hills and surrounded by National Forest. Located within minutes of Pactola Lake, Sheridan Lake, and the Mickelson & Centennial Trails.
The perfect area for boating, hunting, fishing, hiking, rock climbing, golfing, skiing, snowmobiling, mountain biking, off-roading and sightseeing - Minutes from Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument and Custer State Park. This mountain retreat is truly in the heart of the Hills, hidden away from, but easily accessible to all Black Hills attractions.
Approximately 25 miles west of Rapid City, SD. (Airport 14 miles east of Rapid City)
Please note that there are no lake-front properties in the Black Hills. The picture provided shows Pactola Reservoir which is close by but not visible from the cabin.
My wife and I both grew up in South Dakota near Sioux Falls. We attended college at Augustana College. I have a business degree and my wife an education degree. We spent time in Germany while I was in the Army. Following that time my wife taught school and I worked for General Mills in Minneapolis and then in West Chicago IL. We raised our two daughters in IL. We also started our own business there. We are now retired and recently moved to northern Wisconsin where we are full time caretakers for daughter's family lake home. We are again South Dakota residents and rent our Black Hills House while we are care-taking in Wisconsin. We feel fortunate to have 2 beautiful places to spend our retirement.
Dean and Patricia Farr purchased this cabin in 2000
This property was built by my uncle and his wife as a vacation home. Our family often visited and loved the Black Hills. We told Uncle Harvey that if and when he was ready to sell the property to keep us in mind. He did so and we are now the proud owners of his cabin in the Black Hills. Harvey and his wife Mildred are gone now but we keep a picture of him to remind us of the great experiences and scenery he provided our family.
We love the Black Hills. Our home gives us a peaceful get-a-way and is located centrally to all the attractions the Black Hills has to offer. We never run out of things to do or see. When we get tired from all the activity we come back and enjoy pleasant quite times resting and relaxing on the deck or next to the fireplace. Because we are built into the side of the mountain the tall pines that surround us makes one feel like they are living in tree house. We often see deer, wild turkeys, and numerous varieties of birds. We have seen cougars, bobcats, coyotes and mountain sheep nearby (not too close - just nearby). We love going to Custer State Park and driving the wildlife loop where you see buffalo, pronghorn, prairie dogs, deer, wild burros and more.
The home was beautiful.
It was a prefect getaway from the craziness of the bike rally. Really appreciated you letting the house to us. It really worked out well. It was great home away from home!
The house was perfect. Dean and Pat left great recommendations for hikes and restaurants. The location is ideal. Close to everything we wanted to do. Be sure to catch a sunset from the top of Mount Edelweiss. This house exceeded our expectations.
Dean and Pat,
Thank you for making this property available for rent. This was our first experience with VRBO and we were very pleased overall. The location made it convenient to see all the Black Hills sights and come back to the comforts of home. We shared our vacation with friends from another state and it was like sitting around our own dinner table, visiting and sharing home cooked meals. The driveway was a little bit of a challenge, but no problem once we learned how to shift down and get a run at it. We felt at home the minute we walked in. Prior to our arrival you promptly answers our questions. Your instructions and descriptions were complete and very helpful. We had great food at The Purple Pie in Custer and The Sugar Shack makes a delicous burger. We rented a pontoon boat at Pactola Reservoir for a day of fishing. Great people there. We would recommend this property to others. House was well furnished and maintained. Thanks for a great experience.
Very pleased with communication with owner, house was perfect
We arrived at our vacation house after getting groceries in Spearfish. We got settled in no time and had an evening to look around the area. We spent the next 6 days Razor riding the trails around Nemo, Hill City, Harney Peak, Custer Peak, the 1880 Train Ride, the Silica sand mine, and even the Horse Thief cave! All of these sites were just a short ride from this vacation home as it seemed to be situated right in the center of all the sites we wanted to see. The home was comfortable and accommodated 3 couples perfectly. There was a very nice living area, very clean, air conditioned, roomy kitchen, and beautiful wrap-around deck perfect for our morning coffee and evening glass of wine while dinner was cooking. Having the washer and dryer available was also a huge benefit as we did get dusty on the trails and it was nice to put clean clothes on every day. We would highly recommend this vacation home for anyone planning to spend some time in the Black Hills.
We had a wonderful stay at this home away from home property! It was absolutely perfect and we highly recommend it to anyone wanting to see the Black HIlls area. The owners have all kinds of information ready for you when you arrive at the home that can help make your stay easier. They have information on all of the attractions, and some hidden treasurers as well. The home was very clean, and a great place to end up at the end of a tiring day. We could not have asked for a better vacation! The only thing that might be a concern to some is the driveway to the house. It is steep, but very manageable!
Thanks to Dean and Pat for opening their home for our first visit to the Black Hills. Location was great, close to all major attractions. The home was neat, clean, well maintained, well stocked and well decorated. Dean and Pat have laid out instructions for everyone to follow upon arrival and departure which insures a care free stay. The living room and kitchen area are set up for 4 people and we had 8 so we had to spread out onto the deck, which really wasn't a problem because the deck was a place we all enjoyed. Most mornings and evenings were spent on the deck, the wind blowing through the pines was just as comforting as the ocean waves hitting the beach. Made an excellent place to come home to after a long day of sight seeing. The driveway was a little tricky for us simply because we had a 15 passenger van, area at top of driveway didn't leave much room for a large van to turn around but for a car or a small van there shouldn't be a problem. The home, even though other homes are nearby seems isolated, quite and peaceful. I only talked to Dean and he was always very helpful and friendly and would answer all questions, would have been a pleasure I'm sure to have met them personally. Would recommend this home to anyone wanting a great place to stay while at the same time putting you close to everything you might want to see. We visited Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer and Wind Cave National Parks, Spearfish Canyon with its waterfalls, Deadwood, Lead, Devils Tower and the Badlands, all the drives are beautiful and easy from the house. Thanks again, Dean and Pat.
