This is our 5th year in Fundy. The first year we stayed in a cottage just outside of town, followed by: tent, camper, motel. Basically, we have done it all!
We are so pleased to have found Lee's house this year.
In reading the other reviews, we had small reservations based on those reviews and I don't feel they were fair about the house so I'd like to tell you about our experience.
The minute we walked into the house we were smitten, the sun porch at the front become the area we all congregated.
Yes the kitchen is small it is advertised as galley and that is what it is, however, it is very well equipped and it was all we needed. Each morning we would get coffee at Kelly's Bake Shop and I'd cook breakfast. After breakfast we packed our lunch for the day of adventure and head out. If you're doing Fundy right, then you'll be too tired to cook supper so you'll make your way to Sapranos for pizza or to the take out across the road for the most delicious seafood chowder (I think it's called Harbourside take out). We also enjoyed listening to music with a cold beverage at the Octopus's Garden.
The house is large with a bathroom with shower downstairs and bathroom with bathtub upstairs.
We used the formal dining room one night to play board games. That was fun!
The house was rebuilt in 1927 and it needs to be appreciated as such, it's 90 years old and has incredible character and many original antiques.
There are working skeleton keys in some of the doors, the kids loved that feature!
The sunroom, I know I mentioned it, but it's worth talking about again in more detail. The entire front and sides of the sunroom are all large windows, the sunroom has ample seating with wicker love seats, rocking chairs and a table set. Such a relaxing room.
We had our four teenagers with us and they loved the home and all the features and have asked if we can book again next year. Which is saying a lot since we haven't returned to the same place yet! They were creative with wifi, as each shop along the street had free wifi when they needed it :-)
Finally, the location is in the midst of the action of Alma, a very short walk to all restaurants and shops. The closest restaurant is 15 seconds away, the furthest is a 4 minutes walk. Alma is busy this time of year, but the streets empty and it's very quiet by 10:30pm so noise is not a factor by being so close to everything.
Enjoy! We sure did.
We ended up having a really good week. The house is in a lovely location. Given the weekly charge we were very disappointed in a few things:
• The smell of must and mould on the lower level was overwhelming, we were lucky the weather was good so we left the window open all week. Having an allergy to it, I wheezed but managed as I spent the majority of time on the porch. I am sure that the piles of old books, couch etc don’t help.
• The kitchen became known as the value village clearance room. There was so much stuff in it that it was hard to find what you needed. There were only one of two glasses of a certain size and the cutlery only had 4 knives that were not steak knives. I would suggest a good purge and a trip to the dollar store. A coat of paint on the cupboards would clean it up quite a bit. Not to mention getting rid of the jars of food stuffs that are not original containers.
• The lighting all over the house was poor, could barely read in bed. A few decent lamps would help
• In this day and age, internet is expected. When travelling we research and reserve on-line – stealing from the restaurant next door only worked in one spot in the house and was maginal at that.
We loved our vacation on the Bay of Fundy. The closed-in front porch was our highlight of the house and where we congregrated. We were 2 families (7 people age 8 to adult) and found there was plenty of room. The galley kitchen was small and we did cook supper one night. We were very satisfied with the local restaurants, walking the village beach at low tide, and the National Park which was a walk away. The house was clean, well-maintained, Lee provided good customer service. We particularly enjoyed going to Hopewell Rocks, Cape Enrage, the Caves, and Saint John. One household member missed having WiFi. We did bring movies to watch, but found we had plenty of other things to do. I would highly recommend this property to family/friends who love the outdoors.
