Located 40 miles south of Tallahassee off Hwy 98 on Mashes Sands Rd., our Cottage is one of the original Cottages on this road, built in the 1940's, recently remodeled and painted. The Cottage is on ground level (no stairs or steps to climb) approximately 1430 sq. ft., concrete block and vinyl flooring.
The Cottage is on an 80' X 270' lot which goes directly down to the shore of the
Ochlocknee River (about 70ft. from back screened porch). Aged, gnarled oaks and terpentined pines shade the yard.
Our Cottage has 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, large living room, kitchen/dining area, and a 11X22 screened porch which seats 5-6 people comfortably.
The porch is great for morning coffee or eating meals, reading, watching river traffic, and bird watching. The river runs east and west here and the sunrises and sunsets are breath taking.
We are from Ochlocknee, GA., about 90 miles from The Cottage. We have a 143 acre pine tree farm here in Thomas County with 3 fish ponds. We have been living here since December 1988. Pete grew up in Grady Co. and I in Thomas Co.
We travel from here to the Coast (about 1 1/2 hrs.) and do all of our own cleaning and maintenance and yard work. This gives us a chance to spend a night or two or three or more and enjoy The Cottage between guests. And also, we can be sure everything is as it should be for our guests.
Pete and I actually got married at The Cottage in June, 1988. I had been living there for the 5 years prior to that time. We are both now retired, Pete was a heavy equipment operator and I was in insurance and then a secretary on one of the plantations here in Thomas County.
Susan W. Stewart purchased this cottage in 1982
My father and I purchased this house in 1982 ($50,000.). It was one of the few houses we looked at that actually had closets built in when the house was built and it did not sweat and the location was right. The house was built in the 1940's by a man from Thomasville. He then sold it to a lady from Thomasville and then we bought it from her. So only 3 owners from 1940 till now.
My mother and father had owned a place on Alligator Point since 1970, the owner of the insurance agency that I worked for owned a house 4 doors west of The Cottage and the Agency owned a house 3 doors east of The Cottage so I was very familiar with the area and absolutely loved it. Lots of people from the Thomasville area had places down there and so it was like you were surrounded by people you knew and then you met others. We have lots of wonderful friends and great neighbors.
We just wanted to say we had a great stay at your cottage. It was perfect for our family (me, my husband, my parents and my 2 year old son). We have always heard rumors of the white squirrels, and this was the first chance we have ever seen them in person. We been to the coast many times and this was our best stay yet. We went scalloping from St. Marks, spent the day at St. George State Park and had dinner at Angelo's. The cottage is the perfect central location for all of the things we like to do. We got to put the kayak in right behind the house a couple of times when the water was calm. We will definitely be back for another visit. I hope the cottage survived the hurricane, but I would think that it has been there long enough it has seen worse.
Unfortunately we were unable to spend Labor Day weekend at the cottage, Hurricane Hermine had other plans; but I wanted to leave a review anyway. Susan was very easy to deal with and very understanding that we had to cancel our plans. Most people probably would have kept our payment (or part of it) since we didn't cancel early enough. Susan refunded us 100%; so I wanted to let everyone know that she is awesome to work with. We do plan to reschedule when our busy schedules allow, and look forward to enjoying the cottage then! Thank you Susan!
This is a great home to relax and getaway from everyday stresses. The perfect place to unwind. We enjoyed just sitting on the porch and back yard with a beautiful view. Got to see the white squirrel and enjoyed waking up to the squirrels and birds playing in the mornings with beautiful sunset view in the evening. We took our kayaks and enjoyed a little paddling. My son and his girlfriend visited us for the day and they caught a nice size catfish on the kayaks. We also enjoyed an evening of scrabble. Love family game time and this was perfect spot to breakaway from all the technology to do it. The whole weekend was very relaxing. The cottage has a cozy and welcoming feel. The cottage was clean and equipped with everything we needed. We walked the trail out front of the cottage and saw a red fox, but next time will bring our bikes. Ms. Stewart is very sweet and accommodating. Love this place and will return often and stay longer. Not a negative but just a heads up for the area, The gnats, or noseeums were abundant in the evenings. Bring the bug spray. We forgot and had a several bites mostly after walking the trail.
I thought I had reviewed this cottage right after we stayed last summer, but it looks like I didn't. This is a lovely cottage, away from it all. My daughter LOVED sitting in the beautiful back yard among the birds and squirrels. She said she felt like Snow White with all those critters scurrying around her. We loved relaxing by the water too and watching the sun come up and go down over the bay.
The cottage was clean and spacious and quiet. The owner was wonderful to work with. We took a trip to St. George's Island one day and that was an amazing beach area. We also ate (a couple of times) at Tropical Trader Shrimp restaurant. It was delicious and they give HUGE servings!
I was looking this listing up today because my kids keep mentioning how much they loved this place and want to go back all the time! Can't wait to return!
My husband and I met our daughter and two grandchildren at the Stewart's cottage last week. The cottage was a perfect setting for us to enjoy the water and surrounds. The yard is cool and breezy under oaks trees and is a veritable bird and wildlife refuge. The Stewarts were most accommodating and helpful. Although the area is not heavily populated, there are enough grocery and dining options without the crowds of more developed Panhandle areas. We especially enjoyed Angello's. Our plans are to meet right back there again next summer.
Susan thank you for the opportunity to rent your cottage! My family and I had a great time fishing in the backyard and enjoying great family talks on the back porch watching all of the animals. There was plenty of room for all of us and had everything we could need. The Bay is just beautiful and we sat out on the sandy beach in the backyard watching the sunset every night. We bought two adriondac chairs and left them for anyone else that would like to enjoy taking them out to the sunset as well or just watching the dolphins swim by. It is a great place to take your family! Thanks again, Jennifer Parsons

New, right in front of 'The Stewart Cottage' paved walking/cycling path, begins at the end of Mashes Sands Rd. and continues across Hwy 98 and on to Sopchoppy.
There are several excellent restaurants which serve locally fresh seafood or you can purchase and cook your own local, fresh seafood from the seafood houses in the Panacea area.
You can relax quietly in the Cottage or if you prefer more activity you are only 1.3 miles from Angelo's Restaurant, Tropical Trader, Big Daddy's Pizza, 1 mile from the public boat landing and public pier, and 1.25 miles from Mashes Sands Beach.

For the golfer there is St. James Bay Golf Course about 30 minutes south on Hwy 98.
Other sites and activities include Wakulla Springs (about 30 minutes away), Gulf Coast Specimen Lab in Panacea (kids love this) or take scenic Hwy 98 over Walker Bridge over the Ochlocknee River (which the Cottage is on) to Alligator Point, and on to St. Teresea, St. James Bay, Lanark Village, Carrabelle, East Point, St. George Island and Apalachicola. Along this scenic route are several places to dine and lots to see. Apalachicola is great for antiquing/junking/eating and sight seeing.
*Of course all Florida boating, fishing, netting and hunting regulations must be followed.
