Overview

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, 6 Sleeps

Located 40 miles south of Tallahassee off Hwy 98 on Mashes Sands Rd., our Cottage is one of the original Cottages on this road, built in the 1940's, recently remodeled and painted. The Cottage is on ground level (no stairs or steps to climb) approximately 1430 sq. ft., concrete block and vinyl flooring.

The Cottage is on an 80' X 270' lot which goes directly down to the shore of the

Ochlocknee River (about 70ft. from back screened porch). Aged, gnarled oaks and terpentined pines shade the yard.

Our Cottage has 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, large living room, kitchen/dining area, and a 11X22 screened porch which seats 5-6 people comfortably.

The porch is great for morning coffee or eating meals, reading, watching river traffic, and bird watching. The river runs east and west here and the sunrises and sunsets are breath taking.

About Susan W. Stewart

We are from Ochlocknee, GA., about 90 miles from The Cottage. We have a 143 acre pine tree farm here in Thomas County with 3 fish ponds. We have been living here since December 1988. Pete grew up in Grady Co. and I in Thomas Co.

We travel from here to the Coast (about 1 1/2 hrs.) and do all of our own cleaning and maintenance and yard work. This gives us a chance to spend a night or two or three or more and enjoy The Cottage between guests. And also, we can be sure everything is as it should be for our guests.

Pete and I actually got married at The Cottage in June, 1988. I had been living there for the 5 years prior to that time. We are both now retired, Pete was a heavy equipment operator and I was in insurance and then a secretary on one of the plantations here in Thomas County.

Susan W. Stewart purchased this cottage in 1982

Why Susan W. Stewart chose Florida

My father and I purchased this house in 1982 ($50,000.). It was one of the few houses we looked at that actually had closets built in when the house was built and it did not sweat and the location was right. The house was built in the 1940's by a man from Thomasville. He then sold it to a lady from Thomasville and then we bought it from her. So only 3 owners from 1940 till now.

My mother and father had owned a place on Alligator Point since 1970, the owner of the insurance agency that I worked for owned a house 4 doors west of The Cottage and the Agency owned a house 3 doors east of The Cottage so I was very familiar with the area and absolutely loved it. Lots of people from the Thomasville area had places down there and so it was like you were surrounded by people you knew and then you met others. We have lots of wonderful friends and great neighbors.

A tough 2 weeks fishing while fighting the wind

  • 5 of 5

My goal was to have 2 weeks of hard core fishing at Ms. Stewart's wonderful home on the bay. It is so peaceful there that at times you can not hear a single noise made by human activity. -Hard core was the correct word, I've only been to these parts one time when a Hurricane came through in 30 + years (that was at Carrabelle), other than that time this was the windiest I've ever seen this area be on a continuous basis, blowing hard the whole time here, sometimes with Gale force winds. Had a couple bad storms to add to it. A couple nights I thought parts of trees were going to start coming down. Also had the highest tides I've ever seen here on the bay. Several wind blown high tides had water crashing into the yard by the cement table. The house being built like the Rock of Gibraltar took it all in stride. I persevered and finally starting catching fish after I figured out all the science and mechanics of doing so. I love challenges like this, it adds to my knowledge base and lifts the spirits, to overcome adverse conditions and prevail. -ONE hint to future renters that might be helpful, not saying this happened to me or anything, but if you are napping on the back porch lounger be sure a rain storm doesn't sneak up on you while doing so, just saying. Had a wonderful time at your home on the bay, finally saw 2 white squirrels here, first time I've seen them south of the Park. I kept the feeders full and enjoyed all the wildlife stopping by to snack. The only real problem I had was keeping the sand out of the house, it's been many years renting a home where you go from a sandy shore directly to the house (I don't rent beach homes, I come here to fish, not lay on a beach, there's usually a dock, walkway, etc. as a barrier to the sand). Every home I rent I leave a gift that hopefully adds something needed, aside from the 2 folding chairs people might find easier to use than the large wooden ones you have, you'll find it parked by the refrigerator/ washing machines. Thank you again for a wonderful stay, I tried my best to leave the house the way I found it. I picked up some of the larger tree limbs that fell out during all the wind and rain but I couldn't get them all.

Perfect family trip

  • 4 of 5

We just wanted to say we had a great stay at your cottage. It was perfect for our family (me, my husband, my parents and my 2 year old son). We have always heard rumors of the white squirrels, and this was the first chance we have ever seen them in person. We been to the coast many times and this was our best stay yet. We went scalloping from St. Marks, spent the day at St. George State Park and had dinner at Angelo's. The cottage is the perfect central location for all of the things we like to do. We got to put the kayak in right behind the house a couple of times when the water was calm. We will definitely be back for another visit. I hope the cottage survived the hurricane, but I would think that it has been there long enough it has seen worse.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review. Yes, we are very fortunate to be in such close proximity to so many wonderful activities in the area. Glad you were able to enjoy scalloping, kayaking, St George Island and one of our greatest restaurants, Angelo's. We were very fortunate regarding Hermine. No damage to the cottage just tons of debris in the yard. Lots of manual labor, ugg! Unfortunately we did not see any of the white squirrels the 4 days we were there cleaning up after the storm. Sure hope they show back up as everyone enjoys them so. Thanks again. Owners

Hurricane Hermine Had Other Plans

  • 5 of 5

Unfortunately we were unable to spend Labor Day weekend at the cottage, Hurricane Hermine had other plans; but I wanted to leave a review anyway. Susan was very easy to deal with and very understanding that we had to cancel our plans. Most people probably would have kept our payment (or part of it) since we didn't cancel early enough. Susan refunded us 100%; so I wanted to let everyone know that she is awesome to work with. We do plan to reschedule when our busy schedules allow, and look forward to enjoying the cottage then! Thank you Susan!

Owner's Response: Thank you and how very sweet of you to write such a wonderful review. I would never keep anyone's money for having to cancel due to weather, family emergency, illness or any other legitimate excuse. I try to treat others as I would like to be treated. Susan

Cozy and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

This is a great home to relax and getaway from everyday stresses. The perfect place to unwind. We enjoyed just sitting on the porch and back yard with a beautiful view. Got to see the white squirrel and enjoyed waking up to the squirrels and birds playing in the mornings with beautiful sunset view in the evening. We took our kayaks and enjoyed a little paddling. My son and his girlfriend visited us for the day and they caught a nice size catfish on the kayaks. We also enjoyed an evening of scrabble. Love family game time and this was perfect spot to breakaway from all the technology to do it. The whole weekend was very relaxing. The cottage has a cozy and welcoming feel. The cottage was clean and equipped with everything we needed. We walked the trail out front of the cottage and saw a red fox, but next time will bring our bikes. Ms. Stewart is very sweet and accommodating. Love this place and will return often and stay longer. Not a negative but just a heads up for the area, The gnats, or noseeums were abundant in the evenings. Bring the bug spray. We forgot and had a several bites mostly after walking the trail.

Peaceful and roomy

  • 5 of 5

I thought I had reviewed this cottage right after we stayed last summer, but it looks like I didn't. This is a lovely cottage, away from it all. My daughter LOVED sitting in the beautiful back yard among the birds and squirrels. She said she felt like Snow White with all those critters scurrying around her. We loved relaxing by the water too and watching the sun come up and go down over the bay.

The cottage was clean and spacious and quiet. The owner was wonderful to work with. We took a trip to St. George's Island one day and that was an amazing beach area. We also ate (a couple of times) at Tropical Trader Shrimp restaurant. It was delicious and they give HUGE servings!

I was looking this listing up today because my kids keep mentioning how much they loved this place and want to go back all the time! Can't wait to return!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your glowing review. I am always delighted when my guests enjoy all the things that we too love about our "home away from home", the peace and quite, the wonderful fresh seafood, the proximity to several beaches and other areas of interest, and of course the show that our critters put on in the yard. I, of course, welcome you back, contact me any time. Susan

*Of course all Florida boating, fishing, netting and hunting regulations must be followed.
