A spacious detached two storey villa in a peaceful residential area.

Bedrooms 3
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 0 - 7 nights

About the property

The house has 3 bedrooms (1 x double bed, 1 x two twin beds, 1 x 2 single beds ). The main bedroom on the first floor has an en suite bathroom and a sunny balcony where you can sit and watch the boats in the distance on the Canal du Midi with a glimpse of the Pyrenees. Downstairs there is a separate bathroom with bath/shower, wc and hand basin. The lounge/dining room is large, light and airy and is equipped with TV (French and English programmes), DVD and CD players. Fully fitted kitchen. For winter visitors there is a wood burner for the cooler evenings.

WiFi is available at the house.

Outside there's a large terrace with sun loungers and a further raised terrace for dining. Plenty of shelter from the sun with umbrellas, wind-out awning and established trees and shrubs.

There is a barbecue and a table tennis table. 4 cycles are at your disposal - perfect for cycling along the Canal du Midi under the trees on a hot day.

The house is ideally placed for the many beach resorts in the area and exploring the countryside along the Canal du Midi.

The old village of Portiragnes is on the Canal du Midi (World Heritage Site), ideal for cool evening walks. The village has a 12th century church, post office, medical centre, a few shops, a local market, a restaurant and several local wine producers. A real life all the year round and tucked away in the heart of the village, your holiday home.

The house, which was completed in March 2004, is situated in Portiragnes old village, just a short distance from the village centre where you will find a small supermarket and shops selling local produce.

Portiragnes Plage, where there is a wonderful sandy beach and safe bathing is approximately 5 kilometres away.

The house has 3 double bedrooms ( one double bed and two twin beds ) and has 2 bathrooms. The lounge is light and airy and has a fully equipped 'American kitchen'. In the garage you will find a washing machine, small freezer and second fridge.

Outside there is a large patio with garden furniture and there is a barbeque area.

Languedoc- Roussillon is still one of the most unspoilt regions of France with a spectacular coast line. There is a wealth of wildlife and areas of natural beauty with an abundance of wild flowers. The Canal du Midi, which is only a short walk from the house, is just the start of the conservation area. Watching the flamingos in flight is a rare treat. For the energetic you can walk or cycle along the Canal or simply watch the boats negotiating the lock. Cycling in Spring and Autumn is a delight along the Canal du Midi and a recommended guide is the Cicerone Cycling Guide based on the Canal du Midi and written by a resident of Portiragnes.

The black mountain area was well named. Running east to west. Its sharp northern face is covered by dark oak, pine and spruce forests. The east wind, full of Mediterranean moisture, becomes the 'vent d'autan', a fierce hot, dry wind. This is a great place for bird-watching.

There are many historic towns well worth visiting:

Carcasonne, Pezanas, Montpellier, Aigues-Mortes, Pont du Gard, Avignon, Narbonne.

Beziers is L'Herault's 2nd largest town and only 10 mins away by car or local bus. Smart shops, a 12th century cathedral and many bars and restaurants. The Feria takes place during August.

Wine lovers will enjoy the degustations at the vineyards of St Chinian, Faugeres, Marseillan (Noilly Prat tour is excellent), Agde - the list is endless in this area of France.

Cap d'Agde is an elegant seaside resort with marina and sandy beaches. Plenty to do for children with a large water park 'Aqualand' .

Pezenas is an old historic town with arts and crafts shops hiding amongst some stunning architechture. Try the local speciality of 'Pate de Pezanas'.

If you want to make an early morning start spend an interesting day in Barcelona or visit one of the many resorts along the Costa Brava.

Portiragnes is still a very traditional French village built around its 12th century church which is visible from the house. There are plenty of typical French village shops for your daily supplies and if you choose to eat out there is a selection of restaurants.

Bull running through the village takes place in July and August and for the Fete du Vin in October.

Portiragnes music festival is in June and the Feria in July.

Walk or cycle along the Canal du Midi or simply watch the boats negotiating the lock at Portiragnes village. There are also lovely walks around the nature reserves situated near the beaches. Flamingos, nightingales, serins & turtle doves name but a few of the birds seen on our walks around the fields of the Canal du Midi.

During the season, dancing, concerts, exhibitions etc are arranged both at the beach and in the village.

All the usual beach activities are available - volley-ball, horse riding, mini golf, water slide, sailing schools.

It is certainly worth taking an early morning stroll along the beach to see the sunrise and buy fresh fish from the night catch.

The 18 hole course at Golf St Thomas, near Beziers is a challenge to all players. There are also golf courses at Cap d'Agde.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This villa was the best we have ever had and positioned right in the heart of the old village of Portiragnes. The villa is large and there is so much space in all the rooms . The owners have thought of every thing as it is well equipped and very clean. The villa is near to the beach and the Canal du Midi. We used the bikes at the property and loved cycling along the Canal and then on to the beach. Watching the boats negotiate the lock on the Canal was very enjoyable. The garden is very pretty and we appreciated being able to relax there after our visits out during the day. So much to see- we will be back.
