Teaching America "How to Halloween" since 1692
It should be mandatory for all Americans (and those who aspire to become one) to spend Halloween in this quaint, historical town at least once in their life. I have not seen it done better.
Why? 1) Hundreds of thousands of revelers in impressive costumes strolling the cobblestone streets, enjoying the entertainment and collectively lifting the spirit. 2) A fascinating history which can be relived by visiting several historical sites of significance, attending reenactments in the related museums or by simply strolling the leaf-strewn neighborhoods littered with structures that have overseen three centuries. 3) The security and emergency response presence make this a super safe and fun family event with diverse entertainment and spooky fun.
...OK, but why this house? Well...1) Marcy (owner) was a pleasure to deal with and went out of her way to ensure the accommodation experience went smoothly; 2) Remember how I mentioned historical homesteads and leaf-strewn streets? - well this place makes you wish you brought your finest Puritan garments to fit in. You are transported back quite a few generations. The style of the house and thick blanket of leaves adds to the spooky fun; 3) Location, location, location - you are minutes walk from all of the action (end of street is where the Halloween action begins; in the same street for trick or treating); 4) The house is sizeable, the backyard was great with pets, the beds were ridiculously comfortable; and the appliances and utilities modern and reliable.
Any tips? 1) If coming during the month of October, the 'on street' parking is limited to residents only, so confirm with Marcy beforehand how many cars you will be bringing to ensure there are enough passes available; 2) Bring your best costume - this is one place where you cannot put too much effort in; 3) Save the museums and local entertainment for weekdays as crowds are too punitive on Halloween weekend days; 4) On Halloween night and nearby weekend days, there are road closures, so consider getting your out-of-town site-seeing down outside of these times (e.g. Gallows Hill hanging site, Hocus Pocus house, Danver witch memorial, etc.); 5) Expect a history lesson and again - many of the museums cover the same ground but are all worth checking out nonetheless - just be prepared for history lessons; 6) many of the restaurants on crowded days will not do take-outs so expect long lines for food or to drive out of town a little; 7) bring friends/fam!
Sharing the best kept secret in Salem...
I was very hesitant to do a glowing review because I don't want anyone to steal my house when I visit. But Marcy and 12 Winter Street deserve it!!!! This place is truly a gem. You really feel more like a local when renting a house. You canNOT beat the price! The owner was not invasive whatsoever. She even has a lovely Korgi that I would let visit so get my puppy fix for the day. This place is just a few steps away from the Salem Commons and Salem Witch Museum. We walked nearly EVERY WHERE. Affordable Uber due to central location. Did I mention this house is cute as a button? The vintage doors? I think I took 20 pictures of this house! All of the beds were comfortable and there was ample seating. So much better than staying in any hotel. The owners put together a nice folder of information and it was super helpful! You won't regret choosing this place! We are already planning our next trip and NOT staying here is not an option :)
Wonderful house in Salem
We loved staying at this beautiful historic home. It is well furnished and has a lovely patio out back. This house was perfectly located for a family get together north of Boston. We enjoyed being able to walk to a great bakery and many restaurants.
Great stay in Salem for my wedding!
We rented the Historic Luxury Salem Townhouse for my wedding. It was a very convenient location. Easy walk to interesting sights to see in Salem (museums, mini lighthouse, boating, restaurants). It was also a great location for driving to Beverly and other locations as part of our wedding weekend. The house had many rooms and was uniquely decorated. It was convenient that our family each had their own room and could spread out at night. Our entire family had a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Key features for our family was the nice back yard space with BBQ, kitchen (especially the kitchen bar and table). We dined comfortably with 10-12 people during a BBQ cookout.
The owners are very nice, welcoming and communicated regularly.
We would have enjoyed more organization in the house. Lots of mix matched dishes in the kitchen, random items in closets and could use a deep clean. The AC units were dated and loud which made sleeping a little tough for some members of the family.
I would definitely stay here again and consider it a 5 star property but give it 4 stars due to a few lacking features. A great stay for our family and a special weekend! :)
A true step back in history that is well worth it.
This was our first time to the Boston/Salem area and had a great time.
What a unique place to stay. This is a 250 year old home that provides a mix of old and new which makes it the truly unique. Absolutely loved staying here not only because of the uniqueness of the home but the neighborhood (close to everything, easy to get around, felt safe and how well maintained the homes were in the neighborhood). Easy to get around with a lot of the sights within walking distance. We had six adults, a 5 year old and 8 month old and had plenty of room to enjoy this home. Love, Love, loved the back yard.
Marcy was a great host. Communicated quickly to our request. If we ever go back to the Boston/Salem area we would definitely try and stay here again. Thanks Marcy.
A nice home away from home
My children and I visited from Illinois. We enjoyed staying at this property very much. As vacationers who go from morning until night, we were exhausted every day, and really loved having a home to come back to. This property is clean and well-kept. Everything was in working order. The courtyard is newly landscaped and very pretty. The owner kept in touch with us during our stay to make sure everything was going well. This property is walking-distance to all of the Salem sights. It is also walking distance to the Ferry into Boston (a must do), as well as the Commuter T (goes into the North Station). If we were to travel back this way again, we would return here.
Hiking Boating Museums Plays Many fine restaurants Shopping Halloween Central Easy drive to Maine coast & the North shore seascape
