Step out the door of Cat’s Eye cottage onto the trail through famous, Panthertown Valley, an eco-tourist's dream. Cottage is located at the end of Breedlove Road in Cashiers, North Carolina next to the trail's head. It is perfect for day hiking, camping, mountain-biking, fly-fishing, rock-climbing and horseback riding right from the cottage driveway. There are numerous water falls, swimming holes and campsites located throughout Panthertown Valley. Our mountain cottage comfortably sleeps 7, featuring master bedroom with a king bed, second bedroom with a queen bed, and a child's room with a twin bed. A living room off the kitchen has a sleeper sofa. There are 1 and 1/2 baths.Sip a cup of morning coffee or enjoy a BBQ on the deck overlooking Panthertown Valley backcountry area. The views are spectacular year round, but most especially during the fall leaf season. Rustic brick fireplace in living room makes for a cozy place to relax after a day of enjoying the outdoors.
Cashiers and Highlands, the two nearest towns (15-20min) offer fine dining and country cooking, antique, sports and gift shops as well as boutiques and cafe's.
We are a family of five who live year round in Cocoa Beach Florida. We have been going up to Cat's Eye every year since our family bought the place. We love being able to hike straight out our back door into Panthertown Valley. Having coffee on the front porch overlooking the valley at sunrise is the most wonderful sight in all creation. We have enjoyed all the seasons during our years owning the place. Leaf season in October is the most beautiful. Blackberry picking is always a favorite of our kids; especially eating the homemade blackberry cobbler and jams.
Chris Hardcastle purchased this house in 1989
We have absolutely loved this property because of the views of the mountains and the easy access to the waterfalls in Panthertown. It is a peaceful getaway from the real world. It is heaven on earth.
Walk straight from the porch into Panthertown Valley. You can spend all day in Panthertown Valley hiking, visiting water falls and water holes, rock climbing, fly fishing, and mountain bike riding. Then you don't have to pack all your gear in the car. Just take it off on the front porch and relax. Eat some appetizers and grill out while watching the sunset and smoke rise over the valley. It is the Smokies. :)
We were looking for a place to stay with a view and that we could bring our dog to. This place was perfect and definitely exceeded our expectations! It's definitely private and secluded which we loved. The kitchen was fully stocked with absolutely everything you could need. The closets included extra pillows, games, and movies. In the backyard is a shed with plenty of chopped wood if you need a couple logs for the fire pit. There is also a large hammock to relax on. One of the best features of this house for us was the large front porch. It has a gate so that you can sit out there at night watching the sunset and not worry about your dog getting loose. Walking through a path off of the yard takes you immediately to the entrance of Panthertown Valley. I highly suggest printing off a trail map ahead of time. We spent time exploring different overlooks and Granny Burrell falls which is a must see. My daughter was the only brave one of the bunch to slide down the rock slide. Another day we drove about an hour and 15 minutes to Cherokee, NC to shop and have a nice dinner. For the photographers out there like me, this place did not disappoint. The view from the porch was beautiful but the trail had amazing views as well as wild flowers and creeks. This place is quant and definitely well maintained and it shows that the owners take good care of it. We definitely plan to return and without a doubt will stay in Cat's Eye again and explore more of the trails in Panthertown Valley. Thank you for a much needed peaceful retreat for our family!
We loved staying in the Cat's Eye cottage. Unlike many properties in the area, this one is unpretentious and reasonably priced, and with an amazing location! In short, it was exactly what we wanted—a home base for a group of outdoors-lovers to explore the Panthertown Valley, right outside the door. The home and furnishings are modest but everything worked fine and we were quite comfortable. We enjoyed the outdoor grill, indoor fireplace, hot shower, cozy living room, and pleasant view of Panthertown from the porch.
One thing to note—the owners allow pets and thus the place smells a bit like dog (one of our group had mild allergies and had just a bit of discomfort with that on arrival.) Also, there is no wi-fi.
The Cat's Eye Mountain cottage is the perfect getaway while feeling right at home! We were fortunate to stay at the cottage during peak leaf season and the views were spectacular! Surrounded by woods and mountains on all sides and awesome stargazing at night.
The cottage was clean, comfortable and cozy but you'll probably spend most of your time out on the huge deck just taking in the views!
There are many beautiful waterfalls in the area for just a short drive with fantastic scenery along the way. There is a nature walk right at the end of the road.
Whether you enjoy hiking, sightseeing, fishing on the property pond, biking or just plain relaxing this is the ideal place to stay.
We had a wonderful time and plan on returning next year.
BTW...The county was dry but in July 2012 they elected to allow alcoholic beverage sales. Also there is an Ingles grocery store close by with a fantasic selection of anything you need.
Thanks again for a great vacation!

This was our second year at Cat's Eye, and we plan to go again in 2013. You really can't beat the location for access to Panthertown Valley. For two weeks we use the car only if we need to run into town. Very comfortable accommodations and a fabulous view of the valley from the front porch. A wonderful place to gather with family and friends!!!
Spent 4 days & nights in this wonderful little home-y cabin. Brought our dog, mountain bikes & fishing poles. This house it literally a 3-5 minute walk to trailhead, Panther Town Valley. Lots of good mountain bike trails to explore and tons of cool waterfalls within 30 minutes. Also fished the pond on backside of property. Very relaxing, made a fire every night in the fire pit outside, used the grill several times. Very comfortable home with all amenities, only drawback was when our time was up we were not ready to leave!! Highly recommend!!
Around the cottage:
Hiking: Cat's Eye is located directly next to the trailhead parking lot for Panthertown Valley. You take a trail map from the kitchen and walk down the back driveway, through the parking lot and onto the trail. The GPS apps work intermittently throughout the valley. Verizon cellphones are the only phones that have some coverage in the valley. There are several waterfalls near the house in Panthertown Valley including the famous School House Falls where you can walk behind the falls or swim in the pool in front of it. Granny Burrell is just a 30-40 minute walk from the house down into the valley. It is a rock outcrop along side Greenland Creek with a small beach and water hole. Some adventurous sorts like to slide down the rock at the top of the small falls. The Highland Hiker in Cashiers has hiking guides for Panthertown Valley as well as other local hiking destinations.
Mountain-biking is allowed on specific marked trails throughout Panthertown Valley, and you can leave from the house.
Rock climbing: There are two rock faces where climbers often repel. Salt Rock is a 5-10 minute walk from the house.
Fishing: . If you are an experienced fisherman, Panthertown Valley offers a few spots to go flyfishing during season.
Horseback riding: Sorry, no commercial horseback riding is allowed in Panthertown Valley, but individuals can bring their horses to ride. We have an open paddock barn and lot behind the house, but it is not fenced.
Blackberry picking (August): around the cottage and along the trail head are blackberry bushes that are ripe for picking at the beginning of August.
Fall leaf watching: Just sit on the porch or drive down the roads.
Hiking: It is a short drive (25 minutes) to Gorges State Park and the Nantahala Forest which has 3 breathtaking waterfalls including Turtleback Falls where the brave slide off the rock face and into the pool below. There is an easier rock slide for younger kids off of SR107 off of Whitehall Road about 10 minutes from the cottage.
Fly Fishing tours and stocked trout ponds are available in Toxaway (about 30 minutes from cottage).
Kayaking, White water rafting, Canoeing, Tubing experiences are available 30-40 minutes from the cottage. You can do this yourself or drive over the Toxoway Damn and join different outfitters who offer tours along the Tukasegee River. The river is damn controlled so you can only raft and tube on certain water release days. The Nantahala Outdoor Center is a good place for information and rafting.
Golf and Tennis: There are local golf courses and tennis courts in Sapphire Valley, Cashiers and Highlands. Sapphire Valley is open to the public. Others are private clubs that may share reciprocity with other country clubs.
Snow Skiing- Sapphire Valley, a 10-15 minute drive from Cat's Eye has a bunny slope and learning hill that is GREAT for kids. It is usually open Dec-February. (20 minutes from the cottage)
