As you turn off the main road onto the 500 foot long winding wooded
lane, your anticipation grows. When you pull up to the back of the
house, you can already smell the fresh, clean breeze coming off of
Lake Michigan. And, when you open the car door, you can hear the
waves. You rush toward the front yard and as you walk to the edge of
the 50 foot bluff, overlooking your private beach, you are
overwhelmed by the beauty of this place. You don’t wait to unpack
the car. You rush down the 60 steps to the beach. You kick off your
shoes and run to the waters edge. You only intend to test the water
but, before you know it you’re in up to your knees, your pants are
wet, and you don’t even care. And, so begins one of the most
memorable vacations you’ll ever experience.
I'm a Manufacturing Engineer for a company that makes liquid filters for Caterpillar. I live in Urbana, IL and I have two grown children and five grandkids. My grandkids are now the sixth generation in our family to make Lake Michigan our vacation destination. My great grandparents had a cabin in Muskegon in the early 1900's near mount Garfield. My father and his parents vacationed near Pentwater and, when I was growing up we rented a cabin about two miles south of Windhaven, every summer. In the early sixties, my parents were fortunate enough to meet a kindly old fisherman who happened to own quite a bit of beach front property. They bought the lot from him and that was the start of their dream. They were working people so, it took them almost 20 years to scrape together the money to build the house but, in 1981 they completed Windhaven.
James Johnstone purchased this house in 1962
We always loved the Muskegon area and this has been my vacation home since I was old enough to walk. Our family has put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into this place and I can't imagine a more beautiful setting or any place I would rather be.
A beautiful beach, clean clear water, incredible sunsets, and lots of other things to do in the area make this a great vacation destination.
All 10 of us enjoyed our stay at Windhaven. The beach is so nice and quiet. The cottage offers a very comfortable stay--rain or sun. Everything is clean and as described. The tandem bike needed a little maintenance but that aside very honest and accurate description (watch YouTube description). Jim was very easy to work with and even allowed us to have a small graduation party. The screened porch worked perfect for the occasion --Thank you! We'd ask to book it again this year but will be staying home in Colorado this summer. Thanks again for allowing the use of your cottage during this precious vacation time with our children.
With 4 kids under the age of 10, I steered away from the perfect looking properties. Windhaven had almost everything we wanted: a great private beach, sand toys provided, comfy beds, clean showers, kitchen, laundry room, grill and plenty of movies. The kids were excited about the bunk beds but didn't like the basement. We had to set up a roll away bed in the living room every night. Also could have used a paved driveway for roller skating and skate boarding. Otherwise, the perfect summer vacation spot for families!
Our family just spent a week at Windhaven and it was just wonderful. We normally go to Florida but decided to stay close to home due to a recent addition to our family.....our first grandchild!
If we didn't know better we would have thought we were at the ocean. The house was clean and the beach was perfect.
My Husband, Mother, and I rented this home during the week of July 13-20. We were absolutely thrilled with how lovely and comfortable the home was as well as the spectacular beach. The view was gorgeous, and we literally had the beach to ourselves for a majority of the week! There was plently of room to accomodate the occasional friend or family member that would visit us for a day or a night, and it was an extra bonus having those extra amenities (washer and dryer, air conditioning, plenty of beach chairs, etc) available to us. The owner was very kind and offered a list of attractions in the area that might be of interest to us. We had dinner at the Lighthouse one evening which was fantastic, and made the occasional pit stop at the Red Rooster for a nightcap and some good music if you're lucky to catch a good band that night. :) We would recommend this property to anyone who is looking for a quiet and relaxing getaway. My family plans on coming back to Windhaven next summer, and could quite possibly turn into a family tradition!
Watch the owner's YouTube videos - Windhaven is exactly as advertised: It's a really nice cozy cottage on a wooded lot with fantastic views from atop the dune bluff. Windhaven has a large deck with a screened-in porch. Amenities include washer/dryer, grill, parking for 5+ cars, and plenty of beach toys, chairs, umbrellas, etc. The secluded, undeveloped beach is spectacular and stretches for miles. And the cottage is withn a few miles of three great public parks: Duck Lake State Park, Pioneer County Park and Muskegon State Park. We stayed the last week in August 2012 and had amazing weather. The owner was responsive to all our inquiries and provided excellent customer service.
windhaven is a great place for a family getaway. The house is clean and comfortable with everything you need. The location is secluded but still close to shopping, tourist attractions, and city life. The real jewel is the beach. You may be walking along the shore or sitting in the sand but you can always see, hear and feel one of the most beautiful freshwater lakes in the world.

I addition to swimming and sun bathing on your own private beach,
you’re just minutes from Michigan Adventure, one of the largest water
and amusement parks in the upper Midwest. There's the USS
Silversides, a World War II era submarine that’s open for daily tours
during the summer and dune scooter rides at Silver Lake, near Shelby,
just an hour or so north. And, there are numerous antique shops in
the Muskegon area and along US 31, between Muskegon and Holland.
There is also a high speed ferry that crosses Lake Michigan to
Milwaukee in just two and a half hours. For the golfer in the family
there are several golf courses within convenient driving distance and
for the history buff there's the White River light house along the
channel from White Lake to Lake Michigan and the Hackley and Hume
homes near downtown Muskegon. And, just a half mile north on Scenic
