BELOW IS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION BELOW REGARDING LA CASA JARDIN & SURROUNDING AREA:

Casa Jardin located in the municipio (or county) of Cabo Corrientes, population 9,000 people scattered over its entire 2,000 square kilometers, at a density of 4.5 persons per square kilometer This is one of the last undeveloped coastal regions in Mexico. The beaches and water are virtually untouched, unspoiled and unpolluted.

As you begin to enjoy and unwind in this exquisite environment by the sea, your experience will be one of tranquility, serenity, beauty as well, as lots of fun enjoying the wonderful and very colorful Mexican culture with its many flavors.

We hope the following information will help make your stay all the more enjoyable through answering in advance any potential questions and informing you of the surrounding area!

CARETAKERS

We are very fortunate to have Efren and Estela as our caretakers. They are absolutely wonderful and will do anything to help make your stay all the more pleasurable and comfortable. Efren will gladly cut open coconuts for agua de coco, pickup fresh drinking water, purchase fresh fish, do his best to repair anything that may need attention and answer questions regarding the local area including providing directions. Estella would be delighted to cook delicious Mexican cuisine, clean and launder clothing for an extra fee. Efren and Estela appreciate knowing that your needs and comfort are met by them!

THE BEACH

On the weekends you may be enjoying this glorious beach with local families and music. It is all a part of the Mexico experience. There are 2 palapas (ramadas) at the edge of the property directly in front of the beach for shade and relaxation. Hammocks & lounge chairs are provided. Make sure you take all your garbage with you back to the house and PLEASE DO NOT take bath towels or blankets or bedspreads to the beach. (Please bring your own beach towel from home with you.)

THE GARDENS

We ask that you tread kindly on this fragile landscape. We have numerous flowers and are growing herbs right out the backdoor, e.g., cilantro, oregano, mint, basil, thyme, rosemary, lemon verbena, etc., some fruit and occasionally a few vegetables. The salt air as well as the ants and crabs have a tendency to thwart our best efforts! Our intention is to cohabitate peacefully and therefore choose not to use poisons on them or the earth.

THE ANIMALS

We love our ducks. They are very much a part of our home and are cared for well. Please enjoy them. It is great fun to watch the ducks dip into their pond, splash about, live a ducks life from the kitchen window. Mid afternoon, they tend to swim more, play and bathe. The ducks love to eat papaya, bananas, LEAFY GREENS, tomatoes, cucumbers or the peel, fish & more. See the list posted on the refrigerator for more delectables.

THE POND

We have a small pond on the grounds in which we grow lidrios which in turn are fed to the ducks, as they need and love to consume greens. (We have even been known to buy lettuce off the produce truck to add to the birds fare!)

INSECTS

**There are times you may see parades of ants going up and over walls, through garden beds, down the steps and there can be literally hundreds. They are just passing through as they migrate to a new location. If you just leave them alone, they will be gone as fast as they came.

**At night you may witness lines of leaf cutter ants taking down an entire shrub, e.g., hibiscus, by cutting off the leaves and letting them drop to the ground. They then cut them up into small bits and carry them off piece by piece to their underground nest where they process the shards of leaves into edible food. They move back and forth all night long. It is quite a remarkable feat of nature. This deep pruning does not seem to hurt the plants unless its done over and over to the same plant before it can fully recuperate. It is one of the many creatures we contend with to help this garden grow. We are committed to only using natural methods to work and live in harmony with these forces, which includes not doing anything, i.e. the hibiscus will leaf-out once again healthy and beautiful as ever. It seems to be a natural thinning process.

**The alacron or scorpian does live in Mexico. They are poisonous and can be deadly. Though you are likely to never see one, they are here. It is a good idea to shake out your clothes and shoes in the morning and check your bed at night. Also when playing outside be sure to turn over pieces of wood, brick, tile or cardboard boxes with caution, as this is where they often hide out by day. Children and the elderly are at greatest risk from a sting. If need be, there is an anti-venom in Mayto at the home of Rosa, Efren's sister. None of the guests have reported seeing a scorpion in quite a while, but be assured they are around.

WATER

The water in the faucets comes from a well on the other side of Mayto. We use it to cook with, but we suggest you use the bottled water to brush your teeth and to drink. Efren is happy to drive over to Mayto and purchase 5 gallon size purified water when needed.

COMPOST

We compost and if you are so inclined to add to the "pile" simply put any kitchen scraps, i.e. egg shells, vegetable waste, scraping from ones plate, etc. (no meat or dairy products) into the small plastic container to the right of the sink. When it is full, place it into the white plastic bucket located outside, straight ahead to the other side and left of the back garden gate. If you do not want to compost, place everything in the plastic garbage bags provided for all of your trash. Give it to Efren and he will dispose of it.

TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM THE AIRPORT

There are numerous car rental companies, which you can check on-line from Budget to Avis.

There are many buses per day to El Tuito from Puerto Vallarta. From Tuito to Mayto one would need to take a taxi for approximately $500.00 pesos or $28 to $30.00 USD one way (at an exchange rate of 18 pesos on the dollar). A taxi from Vallarta to El Tuito is also $500.00 pesos.

Efren, the caretaker, has a transport business as well. Round-trip to and from the airport, stopping for groceries and supplies or wherever you may need to go for $200.00 USD round trip for up to 4 adults. (One way---$100.00 USD. The gasoline is included in fee.

LOCAL FOOD/RESTAURANTS/PLACES TO GO

There are produce trucks in the general vicinity one to three times a week. They stop at the restaurants on either side of the house. They briefly play very loud music to hail their arrival. Providing fresh fruits, vegetables, cheese, as well as other dairy products and at times eggs and meat. In Mayto there are a few small tiendas for snack foods and basics.

Estela: is happy to provide a meal from her home or cook right there at La Casa Jardin. A menu is provided. Some of her specialities are Chicken Mole, Flan, Cheese Cake, Ceviche.

Rinconcito: (next door) Fernando and Maricela will make your dining experience not only delicious, but also lots of fun! They need advance notice when you plan to join them for breakfast or dinner.

Hotel Mayto (next door) Offers a restaurant and bar to the public. Should non-guests desire to utilize the swimming pool and beach chairs, they charge a 100 pesos Daily Use Fee.

Las Brisas, located on the other side of Hotel Mayto, but before the Turtle Sanctuary, not only has a restaurant, but it is situated on a beautiful estuary. They have boat rentals for paddling abou

About Camille Massie

Greetings!

A bit about me:

I love laughing, walking, relating to/being with others, organic gardening, watching/observing birds and other creatures of the wild, reading, spending time with friends and family, as well as living/being in natural settings such as the Rocky mountains or by the Pacific ocean. One of my greatest joys is to create beauty and comfort for those I am hosting!

I co-owned and taught at a Montessori School in Santa Fe, New Mexico and then began doing Hospice Care, helping others to not only make the transition with as much dignity, grace and comfort as possible, but equally to live the highest quality of life until their time to say goodbye.

I have a very strong connection with the people and culture of Mexico! The generosity of spirit that is displayed over and over again; the priority for quality time with family and friends; their hard working and fun loving demeanor; as well as welcoming me, a foreigner, with open arms has been a tremendous gift in my life.

If you would like to reserve a time to enjoy Casa Jardin, I would be delighted to host you.

Camille

Camille Massie purchased this house in 1997

Why Camille Massie chose Jalisco

Case Jardin is located in the municipio (or county) of Cabo Corrientes, population 9,000 people scattered over its entire 2,000 square kilometers, at a density of 4.5 persons per square kilometer This is one of the last undeveloped coastal regions in Mexico. The beaches and water are virtually untouched, unspoiled and unpolluted.

The perpetual sound of the ebb and flow of the waves lulls one into a calm, soothing, relaxed state of being.

What makes this house unique

The sea, the beach, the front yard are all exquisitely beautiful! The house is clean, attractive and very comfortable. The kitchen is ample and has most any utensil you might need. One of the best benefits of staying at Case Jardin is that it offers privacy and quiet when desired, otherwise one may join in the social activities of Rinconcito on one side and/or Hotel Mayto on the other. You are welcomed in both places. To utilize Hotel Mayto's swimming pool and the lounge chairs, there is a Daily Use Fee of $100 pesos or 5.40 USD.

Look down the beach to the north and you will notice an encampment where there is a biologist initially from the University. of Guadalajara, who has been studying the variety of sea turtles, as well as insuring their continued life on the planet through preserving and protecting the eggs until they are ready to hatch. He is happy to show you around and answer questions. If there eggs in the process of hatching, he will let you know the best time to return so as to witness the baby turtles being released and watch them wind their way back to the sea.

There are festivities, sports and adventures in nearby and far away villaages in which you can participate.

Tehuamixtle or Tehua (pronounced tewa) is a small fishing village approximately 10 minutes by car. There are two restaurants right by the water and both are good. You have to drive all the way down into the village to the edge of the sea. Find Antonio at Adriana's Restaurant and for a fee per hour, he can take you out in his panga to great places for snorkling, fishing or simply a tour.

If you want to venture further, there is a village called Corrales with a couple of restaurants about 30 to 45 minutes away. You pass through 2 or 3 other small villages with tiendas, which sell snacks and drinks.

Getting to know at least a few of the locals, those that originally settled Mayto in the 60's, as well as getting away from the hustle and bustle of ones daily life is a big plus!

Birders take note!

  • 5 of 5

Heads up birders!

Camille's Casa Jardín was one of three places the four of us stayed in Cabo Corrientes. Regarding the house and host, I agree with all of the positive comments submitted by previous guests.

Birders and eco-tourists will find the locale to be perfect. The birding from the magnificent patio was excellent. There we had some of our best views of several west Mexican endemics - Orange-breasted Bunting, Golden Vireo & Citreoline Trogon - as well as Mottled Owl, American Oystercatcher, Streak-backed Oriole and Muscovy Ducks.

Footsteps beyond Camille's jardín you'll find relatively intact examples of Pacific-slope thorn forest, a highly threatened ecoregion which, according to the WWF is:

"among the richest tropical dry forests, not only is species richness high, but endemism is high, also. About sixteen percent of flora and twenty-nine percent of vertebrates are endemic."

Casa Jardín serves as a perfect base for day trips to birding hotspots to the north (e.g. the estuary at Aquiles Serdán) and south (the large lagoon just south of Ipala at 20.207334,-105.542113 as well as the rugged coast at Playa las Peñitas).

It's a wonder that such unspoiled nature can be found so close to Vallarta.

We'll be back.

Priceless

  • 5 of 5

I've never written an online review for anything ever before but our trip to Camille's house was such a great experience that it's the least I could do. If you are looking for a beach house off the beaten path in Jalisco, this place would be the perfect choice. This house has a ton of character, great porch with an epic view. The house really stayed the perfect temperature all day with its shade and ocean breeze. We enjoyed exploring around, releasing baby sea turtles, and surf fishing but primarily this place is for relaxing. My favorite thing was definitely all the great people that we met.

Don't tell camille but I would pay double to stay there again!

This is the ideal peace and quiet beach getaway! Love the house with its beautiful front porch where you can lounge to your hearts content watching the ocean waves and listening to the sounds of nature. Love the garden setting. Owner, Camille, is so friendly and helpful as are her helpers. Beautiful, quiet, restful week. Thanks, Camille!

how soon can we go back?

  • 5 of 5

We were so fortunate to stumble upon Camille's beautiful home when we arrived in Mayto without having planned where we would stay.

Casa Jardin is a lovely house on a gorgeous, almost deserted beach of white sand. We stayed in her pretty upstairs apartment which was clean, comfortable, and private with a great view of the ocean.

Camille was a gracious host; happy to make sure we enjoyed our stay and give us suggestions for meals and swimming.

This is a really special place and we can't wait to return.

Diamond in the Rough

  • 5 of 5

Camille was an excellent host. She showed us the property when we first arrived, answered our questions, and gave us all the privacy we could want. The property is even more beautiful than the pictures would suggest. The ducks were super cute, the margaritas at the hotel next door mixed by Mary were fantastic, and the deck area was such a relaxing place to read. We were excited when the caretaker cut down some coconuts in the morning per our request and gave us Aqua de coco fresh in the coconut (So refreshing)! I could have retired there, but sadly had to go back to work! I would recommend if you are driving down, do it during daylight hours because its a little tricky the first time. Highly recommended for those seeking a private beach, small crowds, and a little solitude. PS. The food you can get at the hotels I thought was really great, plentiful, and extremely affordable.

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Camille's home is always a wonderful retreat for our family. We have been going here for years and can't wait to go back soon. The huge front porch is one of our favorite things about the home; it is a relaxing place to take in the smell, sound and view of the beach. The beach is just a short walk through the beautifully landscaped front yard. The upstairs suite also has its own outdoor balcony for relaxing. The house and kitchen are fully equipped with everything you need for your stay. And if you prefer to skip the kitchen you can order food to be delivered or join a family dinner next door. We highly recommend Camille's amazing home and plan to return again and again.

The beaches and water are virtually untouched, unspoiled and unpolluted.

While primarily for those that want to be away from the hustle and bustle of city life and city vacations, La Casa Jardin de Mayto is also for the environmentally minded.

The University of Guadalajara set up a small station, which year-by-year continues to grow, for monitoring and protecting the many turtles that lay their eggs on this long stretch of beach all but 3 months of the year. They guard the nest until the babies hatch and wind their way back to the ocean. It is quite a celebratory pastime to witness.

From iguanas to Pelicans there are many wonderful and varied creatures to observe in their natural habitat along with an extreme diversity of plant life.

Swimming, Fishing, Snorkling, LONG Beach Walks, Shell Hunting, are some of the local activities.

There are also many small villages in the outlying areas where one can meet locals still living in many of the traditional ways. One of the better known is the fishing village, Tehuamixtle less than 10 minutes away.

Visitors can rent a guide and his panga, or flat-bottomed boat in Tehuamixtle (Tehua for short) to catch their own dinner or enjoy local fisherman's catch of the day,

El Tuito, only an hour away, has festivals for every occasion, shops and restaurants. Mass is offered daily.

You will have to experience it for yourself to understand the beauty and wonder of this remote hideaway.
