About the property

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Baths, 4 Sleeps

The house has two 'homes'(apartments); the 'Top Hat' is upstairs, and 'Under Cover' is the lower floor. Built in 1898, this historic home is full of all the charm and character of an older home. It is certified by the City of Grand Haven as a Residential Rent Property.

Located at 1** Franklin, in the historic area of downtown, it is just one block away from both the channel/boardwalk and Washington Street, where you will find many fine shops and restaurants. From the upstairs deck of the Top Hat or the front porch of Under Cover, you can view the holiday fireworks, or hear the Musical Fountain which plays every night from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Only a little over a mile from Grand Haven State Park and beach, you can easily walk, take the Harbor Trolley (Memorial-Labor Day), or ride your bike (or ours)!

About Nancy Palma

In 2006 I bought this little cottage in the heart of the Southside neighborhood. I have traveled extensively, and the one thing I have found out is that "it's nice to go away, but home is best". It's where you are most comfortable, where everything you need is right there, and as much as you like to visit elsewhere, it's always great to be back home. So, Welcome Home!

With those thoughts in mind I started HYH in GH to be the place you can call "home". I open my "home" to each guest I host, and many return because they have found a place to "hang their hat" and call "home".

The Palma's welcome you, Nancy & Jim

Why Nancy Palma chose Western Michigan

Whenever friends or family would visit us in Michigan we would always include a trip to Grand Haven. The boardwalk, the beach, the cute shops on Washington. We loved showing off "The Lake", climbing the dunes and relaxing with a nice meal downtown.

When I saw this little house, I knew it was where I could express my heart.

What makes this apartment unique

Located right downtown where you can park your car and walk to everything! Cozy and comfortable, Hang Your Hat is the place you will return to year after year and call "home". Everything you would think to bring with you is already here, and perhaps more :)

Guestbook comments from the owner

From snowy cold Wisconsin, we arrived in snowy Grand Haven and our home for the week - Hang Your Hat. On our many hikes along the channel, and on the pier to the lighthouse we saw beautiful ice formations and the rugged beauty of the wind blown broken ice on the Lake. We enjoyed delicious meals ans service at Elegance of the Seasons, Kirby's, JW's, and Fricano's Pizza. We also had yummy desserts at the Baker's Wife and Culvers. We were fascinated by the heated streets and sidewalks in downtown Grand Haven - they were free of snow and ice. The rest of the town has snow packed sidewalks and streets, and snow piles of 6 feet plus on the curbs. Thank you, Nancy, we had a relaxing, fun time in the cozy, warm "Hang Your Hat" flat.

Perfect place in Grand Haven

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the upper level of the cottage. It was very, very clean and had everything we needed. The size was perfect for my husband and I and our 2 teenage boys. The grill worked perfectly and we enjoyed having dinner outside on the balcony. The only thing you need to bring are clothes, toiletries and beach towels! It's in a perfect location in downtown Grand Haven. Everything is within walking distance. Also, Nancy the owner is wonderful and very helpful! Our family highly recommends Hang your Hat for a Grand Haven get away.

Everything You Could Need And MORE!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our extended stay at Top of the Hat! It's located in the heart of everything we love about Grand Haven; the shops, the food, the pier, all within a block or two. We cycled all around Tri-City area. Nancy went out of her way to insure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. A very spacious space with comfortable furnishings, even a washer and dryer! Top of the Hat has a kitchen like your home, right down to the garlic press! The grill and patio seating is an added bonus! We would defiantly make a return trip!

It seems that you have covered all the important details of your stay at HYH in GH: walk to every where, or bike, comfortable accommodation, attentive hostes ;), and a kitchen you can gourmet cook in because it even has a garlic press (among other speciality items)! I do hope you will come stay again at the place you will always find yourself "at home".

Crisp, clean, close to what we wanted

  • 5 of 5

Hang Your Hat is a block from the main downtown dining and shopping area and very close to everything we wanted to see and do. Everything seemed to be in order and as advertised and there were plenty of extras (bikes, DVDs and books, etc). The rental was extremely clean and met all our expectations, which were quite high. We thoroughly enjoyed the musical fountain, castle playground at Mulligan's Hollow, downtown bakeries and toy store, trolley rides, the beach and the boardwalk. All are within minutes walking or driving. One of our favorite things was just sitting on the porch eating meals , playing games, and watching people. It's great place to make memories.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your very comprehensive review! Not only did you cover the benefits of staying at HYH in GH, but also everything the family friendly city of Grand Haven has to offer. The Musical Fountain is only a block from the house, and you can hear it playing while sitting on the front porch. We love to play "Name that Tune" while relaxing on the porch with a late night snack. Of course, taking the wagon loaded with your kids and a blanket down to the waterfront is the best for the total experience. And then, you can walk down to Chinook Pier for an ice cream at one of the many shops; my favorite is Dairy Treat for a Boardwalk Turtle Sundae! Your family was a delight for me to host and I do hope you will be able to come again.

And YES ... we felt at home.

Owner's Response: We have a saying here at HYH in GH: "May all who enter as guests, leave as friends" and it's part of the decor in the front foyer so that each guest will see it, be they staying in the Top Hat or downstairs in Under Cover. Each apartment has it's own special decor that invites you in and makes you feel at home the moment you walk through the door. The Top Hat speaks of an European bistro with memorabilia from Germany, France and Italy, while Under Cover has a cozy coffee persona. I do hope you and yours will come again and make yourselves at home, the place where you "hang your hat" ;)
