About Nancy Palma

In 2006 I bought this little cottage in the heart of the Southside neighborhood. I have traveled extensively, and the one thing I have found out is that "it's nice to go away, but home is best". It's where you are most comfortable, where everything you need is right there, and as much as you like to visit elsewhere, it's always great to be back home. So, Welcome Home!

With those thoughts in mind I started HYH in GH to be the place you can call "home". I open my "home" to each guest I host, and many return because they have found a place to "hang their hat" and call "home".

The Palma's welcome you, Nancy & Jim

Nancy Palma purchased this apartment in 2006

Why Nancy Palma chose Western Michigan

Whenever friends or family would visit us in Michigan we would always include a trip to Grand Haven. The boardwalk, the beach, the cute shops on Washington. We loved showing off "The Lake", climbing the dunes and relaxing with a nice meal downtown.

When I saw this little house, I knew it was where I could express my heart.

What makes this apartment unique

Located right downtown where you can park your car and walk to everything! Cozy and comfortable, Hang Your Hat is the place you will return to year after year and call "home". Everything you would think to bring with you is already here, and perhaps more :)

Guestbook comments from the owner

From snowy cold Wisconsin, we arrived in snowy Grand Haven and our home for the week - Hang Your Hat. On our many hikes along the channel, and on the pier to the lighthouse we saw beautiful ice formations and the rugged beauty of the wind blown broken ice on the Lake. We enjoyed delicious meals ans service at Elegance of the Seasons, Kirby's, JW's, and Fricano's Pizza. We also had yummy desserts at the Baker's Wife and Culvers. We were fascinated by the heated streets and sidewalks in downtown Grand Haven - they were free of snow and ice. The rest of the town has snow packed sidewalks and streets, and snow piles of 6 feet plus on the curbs. Thank you, Nancy, we had a relaxing, fun time in the cozy, warm "Hang Your Hat" flat.

All you could wish for in a rental property - Nancy has put lots of care and attention into making it a real home from home - not only is the property delightful but so is Grand Haven

I wish I could award Hang your Hat 10 stars!!

  • 5 of 5

I looked for a place that could go for a month to work and enjoy life at the same time. I found Hang Your Hat, and I was truly blessed! This is a cute, clean, comfortable spot in downtown Grand Haven, a short walk to any place you would dream of going - cute little shops, fantastic restaurants, great night spots, and most of all - LAKE MICHIGAN! What a beautiful walk from your porch to the Grand River channel and the boardwalk to the end of the pier in Lake Michigan. I put my feet into the fantastic white sand of Grand Haven Beach, and although April was a bit cold to swim, it was just as I had remembered. The owner is very helpful but respects your time and space while you are there. The plants and look of the place makes it stand out on the street full of nice quaint homes. This place is outstanding!

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

On our first trip to Grand Haven, the entire tone of the vacation was set as soon as we stepped into Hang Your Hat. Nancy did a wonderful job making sure the house was spotless, and that we had everything we needed. The house was within walking distance from everything, including downtown shopping and restaurants, and the balcony on Top Hat made for great people watching. We can't say enough good things about Hang Your Hat and Nancy.

Owner's Response: I am so glad that you decided to stay at Hang Your Hat in Grand Haven, especially for your first trip to our "Voted America's Happiest Seaside Town 2017" by Costal Living magazine. The city of Grand Haven does a wonderful job of welcoming guests, like you, to our beautiful city and sugar sand beaches: Grand Haven State Park, and Grand Haven City Beach. The bonus is that HYH in GH is just a short ride by car (1 mile) or a leisurely stroll down the boardwalk with lots of shops, benches and beautiful scenery along the way. Did you get ice cream at Captain Sunday, or snacks at the Pier Peddler? I especially like to just sit on the grassy shaded knoll a block from the cottage, and watch the people and boats go by. I often take a book and a beach chair from under the porch to enjoy this special place.

Just Like Home

This was our first stay at Hang Your Hat, We will plan on staying here each time we visit Grand Haven. Nancy welcomed us like she has known us and keeps this property very well maintained. Everything you need is all in the house. I even found candles for my daughters Birthday Cake. The place is so relaxing. We didn't want to leave. You can walk to the beach, shops, restaurants and even sit outside and hear the musical fountain if you choose not to walk a few blocks and watch the show. You will Love staying here!! Thank You Nancy for the wonderful welcome. Your Love for what you do really shows in the house. So very cozy. See you next year.

Owner's Response: I do love hosting guests at my little cottage in downtown Grand Haven! Especially when they are guests like you!! It is always my pleasure to share my excitement about all our little city has to offer, and being so convenient to most of it is a double bonus. Thanks for sharing about how you can hear the Musical Fountain (since 1960) from the cottage, whether upstairs or down, or a 2 minute walk to the waterfront for viewing. I hope when you come next time the catwalk will be open! There's always something going on in Grand Haven year round, and HYH in GH is available , too.

HAPPY 50 th BIRTHDAY

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful property located blocks away from stores, restaurants and the water. It was so nice to be able to walk in the door and forget everything else. The top floor has a great view of downtown to watch all the happenings and I could walk to any place within a few minutes. The house itself has all the comforts of home and is well maintained.

Cozy, comfortable, conveniet

  • 5 of 5

Being walking distance to the restaurants and breweries was super fun and convenient for my husband and I. Quick 3 minute drive to the state park and tons of kite flying. Only our second time without kids in 23 years of festivals! Apartment was super comfortable, clean and homey. Was really easy to feel "at home". We had a ball!

Owner's Response: Wow! Twenty-three years of Kite Festival!!! That's amazing and wonderful, and it's about time you had some time for yourselves, although there is room for a few of those kids to join you :) I love hosting families like yours and I have been doing so for twelve seasons with many repeat guests that fill my calendar. I am so happy that you have found your new "home" in GH, and I hope it is for years to come! There is so much to do in our town with festivals, great breweries, shops, activities, biking, skiing (yes, we have the Snow Bowl at Mulligan's Hollow), and a great visitors center that can help you find just what you're looking for; we have it all! And, being located downtown, within walking distance to it all, too!
