Why Tom Williams chose Bitterroot Valley

If you like the bright city lights, don't come to East Fork House. If you love the outdoors, hiking, fishing, etc., this is the place for you.

What makes this cabin unique

Area activities include: fishing, horseback riding, downhill and cross-country skiing, hiking, four wheeling on ATVs, hunting, river rafting, bird watching, snowmobiling, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, antiquing and historic sightseeing.

The river receives very little fishing pressure in this area and teems with wild trout that readily take dry flies most of the year. Big game abounds in the surrounding forest and it is not unusual to see Deer or Big Horn Sheep in the front yard in the evening or in the early morning hours. Sometimes even an Elk or A Moose may wander into the yard.

BITTERROOT VALLEY, MONTANA

BY JEAN SEDAR

It was 10 Days of Heaven for me between Washington and Montana, and I was able to share 5 days of it with Rick and Irene Paaske at the East Fork House on yes, the East Fork of the Bitterroot River in western Montana. What a piece of Nirvana 90 miles south of Missoula ... and it is available to rent out to groups of up to eight people for much of the year. (www.eastforkhouse.net)

Although a bit inconvenient at first, we adjusted quickly to the bliss of no cell or Internet service at the house, and almost daily we caught up on all things technical when we headed out the 10 miles to Highway 93 where service returned at Sula, which is just a little store and some tiny cabins. More importantly, it's where the East Fork meets the main Bitterroot River. Cruising that highway and its side routes in search of different holding waters with beautiful Rainbow, Cutthroat and some Brook Trout provided many an exhilarating sight like waterfalls, lakes, wild sheep, deer, osprey and hawks, plus informative historical landmarks, which are always fun to incorporate into a trip.

I hadn't had the pleasure of fishing with Rick and Irene together since an outing on the Deschutes River in Oregon years ago, and I must say it was really enjoyable to have such amenable companions in all ways. Traditionally I vacation solo, but as I realize more and more as the years accumulate, it's just not as safe for me to go hiking, fishing and photographing into the mountains alone. Plus, the camaraderie that included jokes, bbq's and cocktails on the deck together while watching the Big Sky sunsets,-moon and stars over the East Fork was memorable. Add to that some REALLY good wine they shared from their personal home-made stash and it was a recipe for pure bliss.

On my last day alone at the cabin, I was invited for a horseback ride by along-lime friend, Chris, who lives in the area of Darby. As much as I loved every one of those trout I caught and released, the time I spent atop my steed riding into the foothills as the sun burst through clouds and shone "God-like" across the Bitterroot Range and Valley was the highlight of my trip. White tail deer spooked and bounded over buck rail fences, gurgling waterways meandered through lush grasses and grains as they watered the lower pastures and the wind made music in the Aspens and pines. Once the horses were brushed out, Chris barbequed outlandishly exquisite organic Red Angus.........

Right on the river with a hot tub.

  • 4 of 5

Rustic and somewhat remote, its was great to be by the river and close to hiking and fishing for family. Three bathrooms and multiple beds made it easy to fit everyone comfortably. Plenty of towels, great hot tub and kitchen had everything. Appreciated the multiple fans for hot days and upstairs bedrooms. Perhaps the deck and porches and outdoor seating could have been cleaned and stained and damaged seating removed. Would go again and owner was responsive and helpful. Love the Bitterroot valley.
