Yep.. that's a tiny Red Poison Dart Frog on my hand. They are an endangered species, and even after 20 years of living in this area of Lake Arenal, I am still amazed and thankful for the beauty and nature that surround me. Every day is an adventure and to be able to share this slice of Paradise with our guests is more than anyone could hope for in their life... and I am very thankful for this opportunity. I am from Santa Fe, New Mexico. My 1st visit to Costa Rica and Nuevo Arenal was back in 1976... a long time ago. I've seen many changes since then and the Lake Arenal/Volcano Arenal region is now one of the most popular and visited areas in of all of Costa Rica . I built Villa Encantada in 1996 and have been renting it ever since, hosting many thousands of guests over the last 18 years. It's been an rewarding evolution and now my principal efforts go into making sure that our guests have the best vacation of their lives. I live here at Nuevo Arenal full time with my family, having built a 2nd home nearby as Villa Encantada is rented more often than not (Gracias a Dios!). By being here in the area full time, I am able to welcome guests to the villa and help them get the most out of their time at the villa and the area... and continue my 'work in progress' of 18 years in making Villa Encantada a DESTINATION, rather than just a place to sleep. You'll find 11 Virtual Tours of the villa interior and 40 Acre Nature Preserve/ Botanical Garden Estate in our photo section or cut/paste this URL to your browser ... http://www.vpix.net/index.php?tour=108108 On this VRBO site you'll find the maximum photos allowed (30) and (70) 5 Star Guest Reviews. In other words, you know what to expect when you spend time with us ~~ no unwelcome surprises. Our goal is to make your special vacation to Costa Rica and Villa Encantada memorable and hassle free. Thanks for allowing us to be of service to you, your family and/or group. Your Host, Glenn McBride
Glenn McBride purchased this estate in 1995
Our 40 acre Nature Preserve Estate at Villa Encantada is the only property with Lake Arenal access and Pristine Primary Rainforest with our own Aquifer Springs and too many waterfalls to count. Exquisite Nature surrounds you and you really will think 'I've died and gone to Heaven'. I can't improve Nature, but after 18 years, I've learned how to tweek it to make it to make it more accessible to our guests of all ages by building miles of manicured hiking trails and waterfalls that you can sit under and actually get an incredible massage that will be a very sweet memory that you'll always have to cherish. The manicured gardens are still a work in progress and now I look for plants that are unusual and hard to find to share with our guests. Our new swimming pool and 100 Waterslide have been a great success with Rave Reviews and have been met with enthusiastic smiles all around. Next... on my Bucket List ... build a Butterfly Garden area and Orchid Garden, and install a micro-hydroelectric plant. For me... it's so rewarding, and I love sharing this life's work with wonderful guests from around the world. Muchas Gracias!

Villa Encantada was awesome. So much so, that we really felt like we were slumming it once we got to Jaco. The house is absolutely gorgeous and so are all the surroundings. You have done a wonderful job. We just got all our pictures back and had already forgotten how green everything is there. For the most part we just relaxed a lot. Each night we ate somewhere different. Our adventures included the Canopy Tour, La Fortuna waterfalls and Tabacon Hot Springs. All were absolutely beautiful. The landscaping is absolutely beautiful. Once we left Villa Encantada we made our way to Jaco just in time for the rain. So much for going to the beach. Anyhow our visit there was short and like I said we really felt like the luxurious part of our trip had ended. We had an incredible time. We certainly appreciate you sharing your home with us. Please send me some cards and brochures as I have already had inquiries from people we have showed our pictures to. Thanks again,
We just spent a long holiday week-end with family at Villa Encantada with a number of family members. It was as beautiful and comfortable as advertised, if not more so. The owner, Glenn, was great to work with. He provided a wealth of information about activities in the area and helped us select a zipline tour that did a great job accommodating a seven-year old member of our party. Since our party was too big to all stay at the Villa, he arranged an additional house a few minutes away to take the overflow. He met us on our arrival and showed us around the property, providing a map of the trails, and checked on us regularly during our stay. We really enjoyed the well laid out trails throughout the property. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and well maintained and the views of the lake and rainforest are spectacular. We had six kids aged seven and under who would have spent the entire stay making the circuit up and down the water slide if the adults had the stamina to stay with them. (OK, the adults had their share of fun on the slide as well, especially when they could splash an unsuspecting onlooker.) Another popular activity was fishing in the pond located on the property, especially from the island in the middle. We hiked down to Lake Arenal, but didn’t fish there – that will have to wait on a future trip. The house itself is beautiful and comfortable with lots of nice touches. It is well stocked with towels (including for the pool), pots, pans, dishes, basic spices, etc. – far better than we have experienced in other rentals. Nuevo Arenal (sometimes just called Arenal) is only three or four miles away and has a grocery, meat vendor and bakery, as well as a pharmacy and we shopped and cooked most dinners at the Villa. There are a number of good restaurants in the area, and we had lunch at several, but we preferred not to drive at night. But watch your fuel level – the “gasolineria” in town was closed while we were there and is reputed to be expensive when open. The closest we found was Tilaran (about 15 miles) or La Fortuna (about 30 miles), but there are a lot of activities in and around La Fortuna, so you may be going there anyway. Remember that you are in a rainforest and I read somewhere that it typically rains at some point during 22 or 23 days in September, the month we were there, and it rained three of four days we were there, but only one day for a long period and you can find activities nearby that are rain-free since the climate changes wi
Our 5 days spent at Villa Encantada were unforgettable. All 13 of us thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful rainforest gardens, the waterslide and pool, fishing in our personal lake pond, discovering new fruit, watching the abundant wildlife, and kayaking in Lake Arenal. The house is beautiful, and comfortably accommodated us all. Glenn was extremely helpful, personable, and he checked in with us frequently to see if we needed anything. He is knowledgeable about the best restaurants around the area, and he never once let our family down. One recommendation is to have the authentic Costa Rican dinner the Glenn's personal chefs cook and serve at the house. It was delicious and well worth it! We ate a lot of delicious food during our stay. If you want a relaxing stay with options of activities for everyone, Villa Encantada is a great place to come. If you are looking to do a good amount of fishing however, I would recommend bringing your own fishing rods if possible. This house has some but they aren't in great shape. This is truly a great way to see the unique Costa Rican rainforests while being immersed in the culture of Costa Rica.
I'm afraid this review is just going to be a repeat of the others, but the details bear repeating! This place is just beyond amazing. We are typically pretty frugal travelers, but when I saw the pictures of this place, I knew it was going to be well worth the splurge, and it absolutely was! We spent five nights out of our trip at VE; I had every day planned with activities, but the moment we arrived we abandoned many of our plans just to have more time at the villa. Everything in CR was pretty pricey, so this place ended up being a bargain with everything that we could do there for free. We hiked trails, played in waterfalls, collected and painted rocks (the owner's wife has beautiful painted rocks all over the property, and they have paint at the house to make your own!), fished, kayaked, swam in the pool (kids loved the slide, it was very fast!), picked the sweetest bananas for breakfast each morning, walked (5 min) to Lake Arenal, watched dozens of birds, including parrots and toucans, monkeys, etc right in the yard. These are things that we did all over CR on our 10 day trip, it was just so amazing to be able to do them right there at the house! The grounds were just astoundingly beautiful.
The house has 3 bedrooms and then a loft with 3 more beds (2 twins and 1 full). There were also 3 bathrooms, so there was plenty of room for us. Everything is just so nice; the architecture, the views, the furniture and artwork, etc. There were board games and some movies that the kids enjoyed late at night before bed. The kitchen is the best stocked kitchen I've ever seen in a VRBO property. There are plenty of towels and linens, they provided laundry detergent, paper towels, and those kinds of things that most rentals don't.
Glen provided a wealth of information prior to our arrival, and his directions were most welcome in a country without addresses. I was having some trouble booking a couple of activities (trying to coordinate our family splitting up with only one car), so I asked him for help... He booked everything for us with the greatest companies and even got us a discount. He checked on us several times but was not intrusive. We luckily did not need him, but I felt completely comfortable calling him for anything if we did need him!
We have already been talking about returning to this villa again, it's perfect for day trips or just staying put. I cannot fathom anyone not loving this place!
My wife and 8 year-old daughter stayed here for a too-short two days and had a great time. Although far larger than we needed, the location was perfect for us - on the lake and close enough to La Fortuna to do day trips. The plan, anyway, was to do a day trip to the volcano, but instead we stayed at the house the entire time, leaving only to go to the grocery store or restaurants. We hiked all of the trails and saw many animals; howler monkeys, poison dart frogs, toucans and dozens of other birds. We kayaked on Lake Arenal. And of course the waterslide saw its share of use. The crystal clear non-chlorinated water (refilled for each new arrival) was terrific. Glenn is a great host, and made sure we had everything we needed, including an abundance of information. If you're looking to do day trips in the area, Glenn is an essential resource. Josue was always around if we needed anything (like help portaging kayaks), and he does an amazing job on the grounds. The house has all that you'll need: linens, towels, TV/stereo, great patios, even a few musical instruments and a good spotting scope for checking out the wildlife. The kitchen is very well stocked with pots and pans, utensils, paper towels, as well as a reasonable stock of spices. It really had everything you'd need to cook regularly for a good sized crew - much better than average for a rental home. There are some cool restaurants nearby when you don't want to cook, too. The only negative I have is that we didn't stay longer, but I have a feeling we'll be back.
This review has been a long time coming, 5 years in fact. In February 2011 my husband , grown up kids and myself stayed at Villa Encantada for 3 weeks. Needless to say we found the grounds and house to be nothing short of impeccable. During those 3 weeks we had many things happen that required the help and concern of the owner Glenn. If it hadn't have been for him we don't know what we would have done or where we would be now. With the assistance of Glenn and weeks and weeks of phone calls and emails we bought our own house in Nuevo Arenal. Being a property owner and our home also being rented out to vacationers our appreciation and respect for Glenn has increased tenfold. He has rented the Villa to hundreds of people, and each and every person who stays there he treats with the same service and care as he did us. The house itself is spotless and maintained to perfection. If you have need of anything he lives close by and is always available. Even though the Villa is located out of town, we always felt safe, Glenn ensures through a security system and his gardener living on the property that people who stay there are secure and have nothing to worry about except having an awesome vacation. Our personal experience staying at the villa and our continued friendship with Glenn makes us very good candidates to recommend this amazing property but even more amazing is the person who owns it and does everything in his power to ensure that a person's stay is nothing short of spectacular and worth every penny.
There is no place quite like Villa Encantada! There were 8 of us in our group- 4 adults and 4 children, and we had plenty of space. The house itself was well appointed, comfortable, and architecturally beautiful! It even had a working fireplace which we used on chilly nights. Lovely patio and balcony areas that overlook the stunning grounds and Arenal Lake in the distance. The kids (and adults) LOVED the pool area! The waterslide was incredible! It zips you down through the gorgeous gardens, under the rainforest canopy. The property was simply amazing. We hiked all around by the waterfalls and down to Lake Arenal. The trail leading to the lake was ideal for howler monkey sightings. We also saw 2 white faced monkeys there as well! Amazing!! Be sure to get bananas to put on the bird feeder- it attracted many types of birds. The pond was lovely. The kids caught some fish (thank you Glenn for the use of your fishing poles!) and kayaked around a bit. We all went zip-lining at Sky Adventures in Arenal- that was awesome, even if you fear heights as I do. The staff was wonderful there. We also went on a ATV tour with Powerwheels which was thoroughly enjoyable! The tour took you back through the farms, up and over hills, and to a lovely river where we took a swim. We stopped to view howler monkeys on the trip that our guide spotted. Baldi Springs is a must do! Driving home from La Fortuna we saw toucans, coati, howler monkeys and a sloth. Glenn was extremely helpful and was readily available if you have any questions. Although we ALWAYS felt very safe in Costa Rica, we appreciated the fact that the gardener lived on the property. You barely saw him, except at our arrival. He stayed to himself or worked on the property while we were out and about making sure it was always pristine. We appreciated the privacy Villa Encantada offered and the magical grounds. You will not be sorry you stayed at Villa Encantada! It is the best way to experience the rainforest- 40 acres of land surrounding the home- WOW! When it was time to leave to head for the coast, the kids did not want to leave. It truly is a piece of paradise. Thanks for the memories, Glenn!
