On a low ridge, overlooking the 1200 acre Star Lake, and the Highland State Forest, sits one of the most unique and beautiful log homes ever built, the Star Lake Retreat.

Located in northern Wisconsin’s Vilas County just south of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, it’s 10 miles northwest of Eagle River, WI.

Star Lake is almost entirely surrounded by state owned forest preserve, and land, with an abundance of natural beauty and the trail systems to see it.

There are numerous maintained trails for hiking in the spring, summer and fall and for cross-country skiing in the winter.

A great North Woods experience, the Star Lake Retreat was constructed in 1995 of 250 year old hemlock pines felled by a tornado. Situated on a ridge, this log home has a fieldstone base and stone terraced lawns. It’s truly a work of art. The three bedroom, year round vacation rental property has three levels with large windows facing the lake and woods, a balcony off the master bedroom.

Beneath the balcony is a large picnic area overlooking Star Lake, with an octagonal cedar picnic table, charcoal grill and large fire pit forcampfires.

The home has Norwegian touches with pine floors,

a huge stone fireplace and glider rockers to relax in.

A nearby sandy

beach and boat launch providesaccess for guests to enjoy the pristine and peaceful lake.

Picture windows provide beautiful views of the lake and forest. SAT tv, Blue-Ray DVD, flat screen tv w/sound bar w/Ipod dock. Stereo CD AM/FM w/Ipod dock. CD and DVD libraries.

Patio area has an octagonal picnic table with umbrella, Weber grill and fire pit for your campfire.

pans, toaster and coffee-maker are all provided. Enjoy your meals in the spacious dining area surrounded by three picture windows overlooking the lake.

Bedrooms - Enjoy the master bedroom with a king-size bed and a porch with outdoor furniture so you can enjoy the northern Wisconsin starry nights. There are two other bedrooms, one with two twin beds, the other with a double bed and one single bed. Bedrooms sleep a total of seven. Sheets, blankets and spreads are provided for all beds.

Bathrooms - There is one on the main floor off the foyer. On the second floor, the main bathroom has two sinks, tub and shower with heat lamp, ample drawers and storage space. Separate modern walk in shower area off laudry room

Lower Level – A large area on the lower level is arranged as a family room with entertainment center and rec room with full size foosball table. It is an extra living area, children's play area, a storage place for skis and outdoor equipment, or a place for the kids to ‘campout’. It can also be used as a workshop or conference space. Large windows with lake view, double entry doors, wood paneling and beautiful fieldstone walls make this an extraordinary space.

The laundry room is enclosed with entry off rec room. The main wall is fieldstone, the floor, slate. There is a separate area with modern walk in shower and sitting area area, The area has a door which can be locked for privacy.

This cabin is just AMAZING. Very secluded but with everything you need. The place itself is a piece of art, there are a few reviews wich say pictures don't do justice to the beauty of the place and is absolutely right. Place is so cozy but incredibly comfortable at the same time. We were a party of 5 adults a 6 years old and a dog and never feel even close to crowded. Cabin has 3 bedrooms upstairs a large full bathroom, great kitchen, with dinning area, half bathroom and living room with tv on it on main floor and a very nice basement with couches, a foos table, stereo (with a very nice music selection) and a tv. There are so many things to highlight. The area itself is sooooo beautiful and peaceful. Lake, store an bote rental just across street. In regards to cabin it's not only pretty, cozy and very well maintained, it has everything you can think of. Table games, toys for the kids, markers and coloring books, dvds, music, books (for kids and adults) very well equipped kitchen, fire pit, grill I mean you name it. On top of all, it is pet friendly, could not ask for more. I wish we would have stay longer, 4 days feels way to short to enjoy all this beauty and nature. If you love hiking, this is the place to go. Trails every where, if you like fishing you have a lot to choose from, if you are like us who likes a little bit of all you'll feel in heaven. Highly but highly recommended. Can't wait to go again next year and stay longer.

Wonderful Stay at Star Lake Cabin Retreat

  • 5 of 5

I've been going to the Northwoods for 30 years and this is the ideal place for a family vacation or quite couple getaway. Authentic log cabin well positioned high on a ridge overlooking beautiful Star Lake. All the comforts of your own home with the rustic feeling of tall pines and the log cabin that surrounds you. Convenience story located down the street with free Wi-Fi and nice inventory should you forget something.

Lovely log home at Beautiful Star Lake

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 7 adults and 3 children have stayed at Star Lake Retreat for the last three summer in August for one week. When we arrive the Retreat is immaculate and ready for all of us to move in for the week. Plenty of room for all of us. The view from the dining room and living room are great overlooking Star Lake. We have seen a few deer this year walking across the back yard. The kids and family dogs love the private yard and have plenty of room to play games. They also enjoy the outdoor fire pit at night for roasting marshmallows and checking out the sky.

Star Lake with a small beach and a great playground is a short walk from the Retreat. We also rent a pier near the Star Lake General Store for a ski boat we bring, It is great to be at the park and watch the smaller kids but also see our 8 year old grand daughter skiing. This is where she learned to ski. We are hoping on making this trip again in 2018.

If for any reason we have needed to be in contact with the owner, we have never had a problem reaching him. Enjoyed our stay.

Beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

We greatly enjoyed our stay at Star Lake Retreat: the house is spacious, clean, well-equipped, and has everything you may possibly need. You are a very short walk away from the sandy beach and playground at Star Lake and a beautiful Star Lake hiking trail. There are many more trails nearby, so it's a paradise for nature lovers. We also enjoyed grilling and sitting by the fire, making s'mores in the backyard.

The only minor drawback of the house is poor noise insulation -- because it's an all-wood cabin, sounds travel freely and you can hear people talking on the other floor. But that didn't stop us from having a wonderful relaxing vacation.

Though the place itself was beautiful, we received a call the day we arrived from the owner telling us the 2nd toilet was "sluggish" and advised us not to use. There were 5 of us and doing without the 2nd bathroom that we were told the place had was difficult. Long story short, the toilet problem was never solved even though my husband and an elderly neighbor tried cleaning out the trap. Owner offered $200 off our next visit. We asked that amount off this visit. The owner "was taken aback" at our request. Having rented on VRBO before, all properties we've previously rented had someone on call for any such issues. Also, the place allows pets and there is a strong dog odor in the lower level.

Owner's Response: Dear Mrs K...... On the day of your arrival , our housekeeper called us re mainfloor toilet flush slow, needed plumb....... Called several area plumbers Sat & Sun got vms and left msg's...... Sat. I called Retreat, spoke to your husband....... Told him we were very concerned re: their coping with the situation, told him we calling for a plumber and would keep trying to get one there, day or night....... Your husband stated he did not forsee a problem and that you would be fine....... Finally, Monday a.m. got Muskyland Plumbing, who had plumber working near Star Lake Wednesday...... Called two handymen we use for property, to plumber's "snake" the toilet drain...... One showed up to snake drain.Your husband graciously helped him...... I spoke to your husband re plumber Wed....... Promised to contact him before plumber arrival. He stated you were fine with current situation and there was no need to rush....... On Wednesday the plumber called....... Got permission, from your husband, for the plumber enter house....... The plumber said he could not create improvement, thought the problem was the 4 yr old toilet........ Asked plumber to install a new one....... He said call his office next a.m. resched...... Thurs a.m. the plumbing contractor told us new toilet & next plumber would be ready the following Monday....... I set the appointment & called your husband He again said you all were doing fine...... Friday I told your husband we would deduct $200.00 off your next stay....... He said he wanted $200.00 now because toilet serious problem all week....... I was surprised by his new claim of a serious problem, given his week of statements assuring me they were fine and no problems, no rush....... Said I'd have to talk about it with others, since this a family LLC , asked him call me tomorrow...... Conversation ended with goodbye.
