My wife Susie and I have been visiting Hawaii since we met. I've always heard of Hawaii referred to as being "Romance and Magic Beside the Sea" or an "Urban Fantasy" - both have always seemed true to us. I've been visiting for all my life and although there have been many changes and improvements, the essence is still the same.
Gregory Hose purchased this condo in 2005
Over the many years of traveling to Waikiki it was very easy to narrow the choices to one of the 3 waterfront condo buildings in the main section of Waikiki. The other building had mostly side views of the ocean, while the Ilikai Marina units on the waterfront have a 180 degree panoramic view of the water. We are right on the marina so you get to see all the coming and going of boats and outriggers from the marina and the Ali Wai which feeds into the marina. If you look to the right you see all the way up the coast to the Waiani Mountain range and out to Barbers Point. You also see all the comings and goings from the 4 harbors that lie just up the coast for the first few miles - you are directly above the yacht harbor, the sport fishing harbor is next just past the mile long stretch of Ala Moana Beach and 100 acre of fabulous park in front of the worlds largest open mall. Next is Honolulu Harbor with it's cruise ships that we always watch come in while we drink our coffee on the lani. Next is Pearl Harbor, which although the entrance is probably 7-8 miles up the coast appears much closer due to the size of the ships.
You also look directly off shore at four of the best surf breaks on the South Shore, it's very cool to be able to watch what's going on in the marina and also watch the surfers right in front. This is possible because the entry to the marina was cut through the reef, so the surfing takes place directly in front of you on the outside of the reef, as
well as being visible at the breaks on either side.
The 2 choicest beaches are right next to you on either side. Our Ilikai walkway drops you right on the lagoon at the start of the nicest part of Waikiki Beach. The lagoon has had a recent $13 million make over involving deep water wells that recirculate the water and an island with waterfall, all surrounded with beach making it ideal for swimming, kayaking, floaties. This is the start of Waikiki Beach, you can walk all the way to Diamondhead.
The view from the condo was fantastic. As advertised. Some small issues inside. Dont know if was remodeling, but the box and wood stuffed behind the couch was a bit tacky. Also, when im paying a good bit of money for a cleaning fee, I would expect it to be in great shape when I arrive. I am provided with what is left on the roll of toilet paper (no other I could find), hotel sized bottle of shampoo and conditioner that was already used, and an opened used bar of soap.... kind of disgusting there. Booked it for 2 nights but left after the first night.
Loved all the beach toys (although didn't realize we needed to charge the kayak pump.) Lots more treasures: old Hawaiian records and player, ukulele, binoculars, coolers. Beautiful bathroom and very comfortable bed (we put the foam and mattress pad on the pull out bed making the main bed just the right amount of firm for me). This was our first stay at a VRBO and so we were a little confused by the check in process. If we had just followed the simple instructions in the email rather than trying to understand reservation agents, offices, and phone numbers in all the attachments, we wouldn't have ended up in the wrong building at first. We figured it out though and would love to stay there again.
Loved the unit, the beach accessories were so handy, we felt so at home! Thanks for allowing us to stay at your place
Great location to explore Waikiki and surrounding area. Convenient parking nearby and everything we needed available in apartment made for a very comfortable stay.
My wife and I enjoyed our stay in this unit. We selected this unit to be out of the hussle and bussle of Waikiki proper. While you still get some noise on Saturday nights it was much better than other places we've stayed at in Waikiki. The view was great. I secured my GoPro to the lanai railing and made a time lapse movie of the sunset and harbor activity - very nice. We had a short stay and didn't cook, so I can't comment on the cooking facilities, but there are some cheap restaurants located within a few blocks of the condo (e.g., Cinnamon's at the Ilikai hotel and Wailana Coffee House, as well as some fast food restaurants). The air conditioning was functional and much appreciated. It was nice to have a "smart" TV that supported streaming services like Amazon Prime and Netflix.
If we had to gripe, the unit is almost overdecorated to the point of seeming cluttered (maybe the mirrored wall contributes to that feeling). In the bathroom there was a nice statue and plant, but I think we would have preferred the extra counter space. But I nitpick.
We stayed here for 6 nights with our 1.5 yr old son. It was such a great place looking out over the marina. You could see the lagoon and the views were great! Lots of towels, all kitchen supplies, toiletries, outdoor equipment, and more! I was so impressed with all the items included in our condo. It was comfortable and felt like home for the week we were there. The owner was quick to respond. This was our first time using VRBO and we were highly satisfied. Thank you!
All that Waikiki and Oahu offers is right at your feet in this
incredibly convenient & beautiful unit. Waikiki has been spoken of as "romance and magic beside the sea," or as an" urban fantasy," Both terms have always rung true for me. Although I travel to all the islands, I always return to my favorite, Oahu and Waikiki in particular. There is an energy in Waikiki that I find nowhere else, and yet if I want seclusion or to go back to an earlier Hawaii, it's all there on Oahu. In 10 minutes I'm in an incredible jungle rainforest with a short walk to a waterfall and swimming hole at it's base. 10 minutes more and I'm at the top of the Pali looking down at most beautiful view of the other side of the island - currently my favorite view in the world. On clear days you see Kailua and all of Kane'ohe Bay, with it's many reefs and Disappearing Beach out in the middle. If it's raining, even better, watch the Pali (cliffs) as they turn into waterfalls thousands of feet tall. Last year we stopped counting when we got to more than 30 of these waterfalls on a short drive up the coast about 15 minutes. Continue up the coast and back in time to the Hawaii of decades ago. Don't miss the shrimp trucks for a bite as you approach the North Shore and the 7 mile miracle known as the best stretch of surfing on the planet from Sunset Beach to the Pipeline to Waimea, before you arrive at the cute town of Haleiwa. Stop and look around town or eat in one of the many restaurants before continuing on to the even more remote areas of Mokule'ia and the end of the road at Ka'ena Point (the point at which the Hawaiians believed your spirit departed this earth), or you can take the turn off just past Haleiwa and head back to Waikiki, less than an hour away.
