My wife and I enjoyed this past month here in Winter Haven on Cannon Lake. Phil and his wife have been very accommodating. We enjoyed having our friends renting Phil's larger home next door to us. The cottage is adequate for two. We are here for two months, taking refuge from winter back home in the cold and snowy north.
We brought our boat down with us and have enjoyed being able to launch right in front of our home here and boat the Chain of Lakes here. There is a park across the lightly traveled street from the cottage. Carry a chair over there and enjoy a good book or watch the local kids fish from the dock.
Plenty of unique restaurants close by to enjoy dining out or if you want to stay in the kitchen is more than adequate.
There is a washer/dryer in the shared laundry room at Phil's larger vacation rental home, next door.
Your host's live in their home right next door if you need anything.
We arrived the night before the day originally booked and Kyle was agreegable to this. He was very accomodating in whatever we needed as he was there for most of the month we were at the house. Also his parents stayed in the big house for the month of Feb that we were there. We enjoyed visiting with Kyle and his parents and getting to know them.
The guest house itself had everything we needed and Kyle's mom even found a blender she let us use for the time. Kitchen has large refrigerator, oven, dishwasher, adequate cupboards, microwave, and the living room sofa has two recliners. The wall heater did not work but Kyle had two portable heaters we could use the first few days as it was cool at night. Air conditioner was not needed and each room has a ceiling fan. The bedroom is just right for two people and the small bathroom is likewise. We were allowed to use the washer and dryer in the garage of the front house which helped greatly.
The location is close to town. We went to the library (even got a card to take out books) and used their competer. Also we went to the senior center (exercise classes each day. mostly free, one was $2 a one hour session twice a week) and they also have computers we could use. We enjoyed morning walks along Lake Cannon Dr. and in the park across the street form the house. Farm markets were visited weekly where they had all the produce we needed... cheaper than the grocery store. We visited several nature park in Winter Haven and surrounding area. The house is located half way between Tampa and Orlando. We were told there are 50 lakes inside the city limits of Winter Haven. You can get a nice map at the library of the whole area and the lakes. It really came in handy. We would rent the guest house again if we get theopportunity to visit the area in the future and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet place to stay.
We needed a place to stay at while completing the adoption process. We originally contacted Kyle about staying at the guest house (which is small, but very clean and nice). We got to talking with Kyle and decided on staying at the main house. Unfortunately our journey meant that we didn't quite know when we were going to arrive (or leave) We agreed to a one month rental and Kyle was very accommodating of our situation. Having a master bedroom on the opposite side of the house from the other two bedrooms is a huge bonus if anyone has young kids. The kitchen is small, but it works, unless you're trying to have 4-6 people in there at a time.
The area is nice (Lake Cannon is across the street), extremely convenient to LegoLand (opening in October 2011), and very close to Disneyland and Even Tampa. Check out Lakeland,FL if you have some free time. Quiet downtown with "First Friday" celebrations happening from 5-10 pm (I think??) the first friday of every month.
