Whitby is ideally located for walking and visiting local towns and resorts in the vicinity. The 13th Century Historic Abbey Ruins on the Cliff top overlook the town and Harbour. There are excellent Wine Bars/ traditional ancient Public Houses and of course amusements for the children with us and within us.
Twin Piers protrude from the Harbour and after restoration work both can now be accessed. You can go fishing from the Piers, or Boat fishing from the Harbour by Private Charter for approximately £35pp.
Why not venture along the Cliff top beyond the Abbey to Saltwick Bay, here you can get a bite to eat drink and perhaps go winkling.
for very good information regarding Whitby and the surrounding area.
The Historic City of York with a Designer Outlet, McArthur Glen on the outskirts is only about an 1hr away with Robin Hoods Bay & Scarborough just a short drive South.
Heart Beat Country, Goathland is only approx 20 minutes drive away. 8 miles to the North is Runswick Bay, a relatively unknown beautiful & tranquil place excellent for walkers as it forms part of the Cleveland Way.
There are some wonderful eating houses around Whitby, Harrys Wine Bar on the Harbour side is very good Excellent for Cocktails!, while further a field 1 mile out on the moors road heading towards Middlesbrough is The Stables with excellent food. Not forgetting The Magpie famous fish Chip restaurant just a 2min walk away and Whitbys "The Angel" Wetherspoons which is great for breakfast or a good quality cheaper meal with the usual top branded drinks at knock down prices.
Grosmont only a short drive away welcomes you with a Steam Railway heading to Pickering and sometimes serves lunch onboard on Sundays, this is a journey through beautiful countryside.
There are also occasional Steam engines leaving from Whitby in Summer months and a Santas Special during the Xmas period.

Wonderful period hideaway cottage
The owner Colin provides a wealth of useful information prior to your stay and the cottage is filled with extra touches to make your stay wonderful. We saw far less of Whitby than we intended despite the amazing sunny weather because we were happy curled up on big comfy sofas in front of the log burner. The bed was extremely comfortable and the setting is lovely and so quiet despite the fact that you are right in the town centre. The location couldn't be better. Everywhere was spotless when we arrived and the cottage has everything you need. Next time we will come in the summer so we can make use of the courtyard and summer house. Thank you
Fantastic review and really appreciated, thank you so much for pointing out the outside space which is at a premium in Whitby Holiday Let’s
Also appreciate the repeat booking
New Year at Gullscry Cottage
We found the cottage to be immaculate and very cosy and loved how close it is to the harbour and all whitby has to offer. We loved coming back from our days out to the cottage and it felt like home from home.
Especially liked the log burner and the bedrooms were so cosy and the beds were very comfortable!
Would not hesitate to book again, would like to visit in the summer, would be nice to use the little summer house and sit out in the courtyard with a glass of wine!
Colin is so helpful and recommended different places to eat, we liked Abbey Wharf for fish and chips and we had a lovely meal at the Moon and Sixpence on New Year's Day.
Thank you Colin!
WOW Thank you for a wonderful review, pointing out the locality & advantages Gulls Cry Cottage has.
It’s really appreciated that you have taken the time to let future guests know what Gulls Cry offers.
The Cottage was left immaculate and we would welcome Jackie and her group back any time.
The Old House in Whitby centre
Thirst of all must be said that the service is ok, but the house self is small/ narrow for long people and it's very dark inside the house. Further if you like silence, than is it by the house noisy by the birds there. They crying the whole day and night. It's unbelieveble.
Also is it difficult to find a good place to park your car and 5 pounds pro day is a lot of money for a very simple parking place where people are damaging your car...
Quite a disappointing review when we have over 70 Five Star Reviews on Trip Advisor and 5 Four Star.
This Chap refers to the Seagulls, not in our control I'm afraid. The Cottage being dark yet he left all the curtains shut!
He also didn't have a car but a works van for which we gave him a Permit, as we do all our guests and no mention of damage, I presume Seagull Guano!
He also left hundreds of cigarette ends, fish guts and too many maggots to count loose in the Wheelie bin which had to be emptied by hand.
In addition he almost completely blocked the sink and bath with what looked like beard hair.
Thank goodness not all guests are like this!
The cottage was very comfortable and decorated to a very high standard
The cottage was perfectly situated to enjoy whitby and the walks around the bay. It was very comfortable, and the outside space was a bonus. We did use the outside table and the little lean too summer house.
We get most of our guests appreciating the outside space/Summer House and BBQ at Gulls Cry as most Cottages in Whitby do not have this facility so thank you for pointing this out
Weekend with friends
Lovely cottage in fantastic location for exploring Whitby.
Appreciate the review and for the guests leaving Gulls Cry clean & tidy
Smart and comfortable home away from home
Very nicely appointed cosy yet spacious cottage .high standard throughout .comfortable thus relaxing here.excellant location ; quiet yet literally a minute from the shops .if i were to think hard of a criticism ,it would benefit from a second seperate toilet and a couple of blankets / rugs to enable sitting out in the super court yard when turning chilly.thanks so much for a much needed comfortable stay .
Really thoughtful and appreciated review thank you.
We do have a blanket in the Summer House for guests which perhaps wasn't spotted.
Re-additional toilet, I'm afraid as it is a couple of Old Fishermans Cottages knocked into one detached another toilet would have meant doing away with one of the bedrooms. I fully appreciate given the space a second is always handy.
Thank you so much for the review
