Property type cottage

About the property

Private rural 3 bedroom cottage, & optional extra1 bedroom cabin

The charming cottage is tucked away down its own private drive, next to a neighbouring farm where you can buy delicious fresh eggs and homemade cider. The cottage is set on the east side of the River Fowey near the pretty tidal creek of Penpol. Ideal for country walks and exploring the coast and beaches. To explore the north coast of Cornwall, to Padstow is around an hour depending on traffic.

The cottage is west facing, with sheltered patio and orchard beyond. It is near to the pretty tidal village of Lerryn, with its excellent local shop and slipway for launching canoes/kayaks. It is a 10 minute drive to the south coast footpath and secluded beaches of Lantic Bay. The river village of Boddinick is 10 minutes by car, where you can cross by ferry to the popular town of Fowey. Eden project and Lanhydrock gardens and house are 30 and 20 minutes away respectively and the character town of Lostwithiel with local shops and quaint antique shops is a 15 minute drive. The picturesque fishing village of Polperro and Looe for fresh fish are a 25 minute drive away, and inland Bodmin moor is a similar distance for walking and exploring. Polruan is another pretty village, opposite Fowey, with two good pubs and passenger ferry across to Fowey. The later is fun to explore the shops and cafes with excellent pasties.

The cottage itself sleeps 6 people, with a double bedroom and two twin rooms, all upstairs, ideal for a family. There is extra optional accommodation for two in our new separate Eco contemporary oak framed cabin with one double bedroom. This could be ideal for extended family perhaps grandparents or another couple staying. There is room for a cot for a baby/toddler. Both accommodations have super fast wifi.

The garden is private and well behaved dogs may be considered. Although the garden and orchard are surrounded by hedges it may not be escape proof. Note there maybe sheep in the nearby fields. Please consult with the owner should you wish to bring a dog.

The cottage has one bathroom with bath and shower, and toilet. There is also a separate toilet upstairs. Downstairs there is a good sized sitting room with sofas and a wood burning stove (wood is supplied) and piano for the musically minded, along with numerous puzzles and games for entertainment. The sitting room steps up into the beamed dining area looking out onto the garden. There is an oil run Rayburn which provides a lovely cosy warmth to this area (usually it is on in the autumn & winter months). There is also central heating throughout the cottage. The beamed kitchen has an electric oven and hob, with a dishwasher, a fridge/freezer, and washing machine.

Outside there is suitable parking for two cars. There is a paved patio area with a table & chairs for 6 and a sun parasol. The patio area is a real sun trap, lovely for sitting out for meals in Summer.A BBQ is provided and there are two sun-loungers and four fold up canvas chairs. There is also a historic well which for safety reasons is covered and securely locked up.

The optional eco-contemporary cabin is on one level, with a double bed room with en-suite shower/toilet and basin. The sunny living area is open plan, with the dining table overlooking the orchard and sitting area at one end. A self contained kitchen is about to be fitted ready for use in mid to late May of this year. The kitchen will have electric oven & hob, and fridge with small freezer section. Also there will be a private deck area at the end of sitting area through double doors. This is also due to be built with BBQ area by mid May.

The cabin will be available from late May.

About Jane

We purchased the cottage with my sister as our children 'fledged the nest' almost as a mid-life crisis project. Adam runs Carpenter Oak, who build oak framed buildings so the cabin was an exciting project to do. And the cottage a wonderful escape from everyday life.

Now we want to share this special place with others.

Jane purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Jane chose Saint Veep

We love the outdoors, and the surrounding countryside is a beautiful unspoilt area. We are lucky that the sea is a 10 minute drive, and the River Fowey has many lovely walks and canoeing opportunities too.

At the end of the day we come back to the peace and tranquility of the cottage and garden.

What makes this cottage unique

Quintole cottage is 300 years old, and feels warm and welcoming. There is a special light that comes in through the windows facing west, making it a lovely place to be in doors as well as out. The patio is a sheltered suntrap in summer, but in winter the cosy wood burner and rayburn keep the cottage toasty and warm.

Pretty and peaceful location

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay in this pretty cottage - it was beautifully clean and well equipped for a family of 5. Jane made us very welcome with flowers and Prosecco which was a wonderful surprise! The cottage is in a beautiful garden next to a farm with sheep in the nearby field, very peaceful. We didn't rent the cabin but it looks stunning. Fowey is a short drive away including a ferry crossing - we were fortunate enough to be there during the Fowey Regatta and saw the Red Arrows which was a real bonus!

Owner's Response: Thank you Sandy, I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay in the cottage. It is a lovely area and we are happy to share our cottage with others. Maybe next time you might like to return with friends and hire the cabin out also (at a favourable discount to you). Kind regards and enjoy the last of the Summer. Jane

Lovely rural retreat

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The cottage was well furnished and very well equipped with everything you could need. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and the beds were very comfortable. We visited in the winter and there was ample heating, we really enjoyed the log burner. A great place to visit and Jane couldn't have been more helpful.

This property is 'work in progress', by the owner's admission.

  • 1 of 5

The cottage is in a poor state of repair, with damp in the sitting room and very tired furnishing and fittings, some of which are broken (for example the bracket holding the shower head). Tins for cooking in were old grimy and unusable, the bath is badly pitted, among many issues here. I do not think it is of an adequate standard for letting- not at the price being charged. Hazardous low ceilings for anyone over 5'9'' in height.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately this group of guests were staying when our brand new sofa was broken and this was not helped by not reporting the breakage, resulting in part of the deposit not being refunded. Sadly this has not helped the owner - guest relationship. With regard to the furnishings this review is not accurate as the sofas are new, and also the curtains in many of the rooms are new. We have employed professional cleaners to clean the properties. The issue of damp is also inaccurate. We have had a very wet August and as with any old property the need to air and put the heating on helps to maintain a dry atmosphere. We have also recently bought a dehumidifier to help in this unseasonally wet weather. We put in a lovely wood burner in the sitting room which generates a good heat and there is central heating and a Rayburn which are excellent during the colder months. The shower has now been fixed with a new head and clip. The issue of the baking trays is sad as many have history with the cottage and are perfectly good to use. Most of the kitchen equipment and crockery are new, bought specially for the cottage and cabin. The beams in the cottage are as seen in the photographs. Bearing in mind that the cottage is 300 years old and that people were shorter in those days, it has not stopped my 6' husband and 6'2" brother in-law enjoying the cottage. They just spend a little less time in the kitchen! It is our first season and we will continue to upgrade and improve the property for all our guests to enjoy.

A thoroughy enjoyable few days - despite being a little unlucky with the weather!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is absolutely sweet, very well equipped and beautifully clean. We had five adult family members staying there and additionally rented the newly finished cabin, just across the garden, for a further couple, who thoroughly enjoyed their time there. Again, the cabin is extremely well equipped and wonderfully light and modern. The location is very peaceful and not far from Fowey and other places of interest. We felt very welcomed on arrival and would thoroughly recommend Quintole Cottage.

Great, quiet, get away from it all place

Lovely cottage in a quite rural location. Cottage was well equipped and surrounded by a beautiful garden. The oak framed annex was gorgeous and beautifully kitted out. The owners left loads of ideas for exploring the area. Thank you Jane and Adam.

Owner's Response: Thank you. I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay and liked the oak framed cabin and old cottage. It is a great place to get away from it all, being tucked away but within easy reach of interesting places to visit, such as Fowey and the beautiful coastline. Your welcome to come again. Kind regards Jane

This is a Gem!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Quintole, four of us and another family of four, worked very well with the modern studio in the garden, even though kitchen was not yet finished. I loved the contrast between gorgeous old style cottage with lovely modern furnishings, and the oak frame and glass studio, with beautiful view on to rolling hills above the river.

The place is well equipped, with interesting books, games and maps; it feels like a well loved home.  Owners very helpful and informative about the area, and best pub lunches etc. The location is superb with gentle river side walks on the door step and dramatic coastal walks close by, a photographers dream!  Highly recommend it, we plan to return.
