We had a wonderful stay. The villa was so clean and full of comfortable amenities, like nice white fluffy towels. We felt like we were in a hotel, but with all the space that comes from a private villa. Wonderful view and location, steps from the beach, wonderful restaurants and even grocery store. The property managers were also very attentive and kind. Grazie!
Villa Marea is located in Mondello. This charming seaside village, settled between the two rocky hills Monte Pellegrino and Monte Gallo, has a very interesting history. At first, it was a fishing marshy village, until Prince Francesco Lanza di Scalea started the drainage in 1891. In the early ‘900s, a Belgian society obtained the handover of a big portion of this territory, committing itself to create an high-class seaside village; thereby they built a luxury hotel; a bathing resort on the sea, which is also a very elegant and well-known restaurant today; lots of liberty style villas, that you can still admire around; kiosks, gardens and so on. Its lovely bay encompasses a characteristic marina, just opposite to the main square of Mondello, where you will also see the old watchtower of Fico D’India and the “tonnara”, a Sicilian typical building for tuna fishing, both surrounded by bars and restaurants today. Natural reserves of Capo Gallo and Monte Pellegrino The Natural Reserve of Capo Gallo is reachable through a coast path, on the west part of the village. Monte Gallo is a promontory overlooking the sea, surmounted by a white tower called “Semaforo”.It is rich in caves, whose the most famous is “Grotta dell’Olio”, a suggestive sea cavern with clear bright water and light sandy seabed brightened by rays of sunshine passing from some top fissures. This natural reserve has a varied flora and fauna: here you can see plants such as Brooms of Gasparrini, wild Orchids,Sicilian Sparviere and a lot of animals such as foxes, wild rabbits, peregrine falcons, real seabirds. The Natural Reserve of Monte Pellegrino comprises the whole homonymous mountain and the royal estate of Favorita. Goethe described it as “The most beautiful promontory in the world”, maybe thanks to its magic contrasts, different nature colors, steep sides and practicable plains. Here there is the most important pilgrimage place of Palermo,Santa Rosalia’s sanctuary, with its particular rocky church. Palermo Palermo is Sicily’s cultural and touristic capital, thanks to its history, art and architecture. Its sights will really excite you. You must visit Massimo theatre, the biggest one in Italy and the third one in Europe; Piazza Politeama and its renowned theatre; the Medieval Cathedral; the Royal Palace with its Palatine Chapel; the International puppet museum; the Chinese Palace, an oriental building on the foot of Monte Pellegrino; the great number of interesting ancient churches, such as “Casa Professa”, “Church of Martorana”, “Church Magione”, “S.S. Salvatore”, “Church of Santa Maria dello Spasimo” and a lot more. Numerous tourists are really attracted by its delicious food, in particular by its “street food”, so you should not miss its typical street markets of Ballarò, Capo and Vucciria, which will catch your senses through unique smells, flavors and colors. Here you can find “pani e panelle”,“pani ca’ meusa”,“sfincione”,“stigghiola”,“vastedda” and many other culinary specialties. Feasts and festivals WORLD FESTIVAL ON THE BEACH Since 1985, Mondello has been the place of an International sport festival, which includes beach volley, kite surf, windsurf, sailing and musical shows, hosting athletes and famous people from all over the world. It takes place in the end of May and it usually lasts 4-5 days. FESTINO OF SANTA ROSALIA The so called “Festino” is the most important feast for people of Palermo. It is on 15th July, but the great celebration is the night before, when the statue of the Saint wanders the streets of the old part of the city, that are full of food and toys stands. At the end of the holy procession there are very stunning fireworks in the seaport.
