La Marjolaine is a pretty villa set in the countryside of the central Var, less than 30 minutes from the beaches of the Cote D'Azur and also about 45 minutes from the stunning Gorge du Verdon and close to many delightful villages that abound in this area. It is set in a calm, quiet area only minutes from vineyards and many degustation opportunities!
The self-contained apartment for up to 4 people is the whole lower floor of the Villa, directly opposite the Pool and Patio area and has its own car parking and entrance. Hirers have use of pool, BBQ and garden areas. The Villa is in a quiet Quartier with lovely views south over the Maures hills. The pool area is completely private and not overlooked by anyone. Kathy & Alan, the owners live above the apartment in the house and will endeavour to do all they can to make your stay welcoming and enjoyable.
Additional Information: In addition to the many other activities already mentioned, we are of course in the centre of the Provence vineyards, and within a 15 minute driving radius there are too many local vineyards and wineries to list. Suffice to say, you will not be disappointed if Wine tasting is your passion!
Quite close by you can go horse riding, canoeing, fishing, and there are 6 superb Golf courses within an hours drive, with the best being only 10 minutes away! This also boasts a very comfortable Spa, so maybe partners can indulge in both! In short, you can satisfy most interests easily within a short drive from the villa. Should you wish to just chill out & relax, the house is set in a delightfully calm, quiet area, & the pool & surrounding patio is completely private and secluded, and is ideal for quiet lazy days improving the tan or reading under the Olive trees.
Alan & Kathy retired from a busy life in Hong Kong to come to Provence in 2005. Since then, life has consisted of improving the property, learning to tend gardens, playing Tennis, Golf and generally enjoying the beautiful countryside in and around this wonderful area of southern France-Come and spend some time here!
Alan & Kathy Sankey purchased this apartment in 2001
We had many holidays in the area in the 70's and 80's and always enjoyed this part of the world. With the wonderful climate we always hoped we may one day retire here, and with luck, that has come to pass-We both feel very lucky and very content to be here now.
After spending many holidays looking for a property in the Var region-we both fell in love with the house the minute we entered the front gates-it had many of the features we were looking for, a great position, good views, potential for improvements and lots of projects for Alan to keep busy with! What we didn't immediately appreciate was its great location in relation to proximity to the coast and beaches, access to the Autoroute, main line railway station, closeness to airports and the hills and hinterland of Provence, perfect for exploring the south of France and Spain and Italy too.
This was our second visit to La Marjolaine and dare we say that we have booked again for 2014. Kathy and Alan could not be more welcoming and helpful with nothing being too much trouble for them. The location is an oasis of tranquility but within easy reach of the many and quaint provincial villages and also the major towns of Cannes. Nice, St Raphael, Ste Maxime and St Tropez.
There are a number of restaurants within easy reach of La Marjolaine but for those who like to self cater and enjoy sitting in the glorious summer sunshine beside the pool, there are three supermarkets within a five minute drive of the accommodation.
We cannot recommend too highly this little gem set in the heart of Provence. Vive La Marjolaine!
This was our second visit to “La Marjolaine” (see “A Great Find” reviewed 4th September, 2011 on Trip Advisor) and this time we stayed for three weeks.
The welcome my husband and I received from Alan and Kathy was that of old friends and we felt as though we had returned home. This time though there was a lovely brand new shower room waiting for us complete with a huge shower head, a separate hand held shower and twin hand basins along with plenty of storage.
Our time in the very clean, modern and well equipped apartment, complete with a large outside space with plenty of comfortable furniture was spent lounging around and swimming in the large swimming pool, visiting local haunts including wine producing and tasting areas, visiting Nice, driving along the coastal roads and just getting into the swing of the French way of life.
If you are looking for a very relaxing holiday with the ability to visit many of the numerous local sights and also enjoy gastronomic delights then look no further than “La Marjolaine” where a wonderful time is guaranteed. Should you also wish to walk or cycle then there are various choices of routes available either in the immediate vicinity or slightly further afield. Or else you may enjoy table tennis or badminton, both of which are provided, followed by a leisurely lunch prepared on the gas barbecue and accompanied by the local wine. The choices are endless. C’est la vie!
We have stayed in many holiday apartments and villa's in the area over the year's but found that La Marjolaine apartment was one of the best. The villa is situated in a small hamlet but we found the atmosphere extremely relaxing and very quiet but only a short drive with easy access to neighbouring villages and the a8 for travelling further afield. We found the picture and descrpitions on the site to be spot on - however they don't do justice to the beautifull outdoor space with attractive views across the valley from the massive patio area. By far the best feature of this holiday was the exremely friendley welcome from Cathy and Alan - they were superb hosts who were very willing to provide expert help and advice about the area, but had got the balance right in terms of maintaining distance to allow a restfull peacefull uninterupted stay yet warm and welcoming and very hospitable.
My wife and I found the perfect holiday home in La Marjolaine near Les-Arcs-sur-Argens where we spent two wonderful weeks in September 2012. The title to this review tells you much but it is not the whole story. The house is located amidst beautiful and peaceful countryside in the heart of the Provencal vineyards and with wonderful views of the surrounding hills. Although not large the house provides excellent accommodation and is so well equipped that in no time at all we felt that it was home from home, a feeling re-enforced by our host and hostess, Alan and Kathy, who could not have been more welcoming. Never intrusive they were always there if we needed help or advice and were a fund of knowledge when it came to suggested trips, places to eat, local markets or advice on the immediate area.
During our stay we enjoyed many outings but we also enjoyed staying at home - breakfast each morning in glorious sunshine on the terrace, lounging after lunch by the beautiful swimming pool and of course braving the not very cold water of the pool itself.
But of course we didn't spend every day at home. The Mediterranean resorts of Sainte Maxime, Frejus and Saint Tropez and many smaller coastal resorts are within easy reach of La Marjolaine and all live up to their enviable reputations. A lovely way to visit Saint Tropez is to drive to Sainte Maxime and from there take the short inexpensive boat trip across the bay to Saint Tropez. Inland and some little distance away we visited one of Europe's most beautiful canyons - Le grand canyon du Verdon - a wild and spectacular and beautiful landscape - a visit not to be missed.
In summary, Kathy and Alan and La Marjolaine provided us with a wonderful and unforgettable holiday so much so that we are already booked for the same two weeks in 2013.
We had a such lovelely stay in Villa La Marjolaine. We rented the appartment with our family of 4. As we were with 2 small childeren the appartment was big enough. Although some things are a getting a bit old (bathroom) the appartment was very comfortable, very clean and cosy. We adored the tranquillity, the hospitality and privacy the lovely hosts gave us, the beautiful vieuw on the vineyards of Les Arcs, the beautiful terrace with swimmingpool. We are definitely going back to this little peace of heaven.
This is such a great place to stay we returned for a second visit and stayed for a fortnight instead of a week the second time. It's so peaceful, yet close enough to the busy coast if you're after that, and with a large supermarket just 5 minutes' drive away as well as many local markets. We enjoyed visiting the many local wineries - some you can even walk to (we cycled to quite a few).
The accommodation is quite small if there are four in the party, but because the weather was consistently good we spent all the time outside on the lovely terrace, eating all our meals out there. It was also hot inside, whereas there are plenty of shaded areas on the terrace - or of course the lovely pool to cool off in.
Our children really enjoyed using the table tennis table and visiting nearby canoeing and high ropes centre, as well as the water parks.
The owners are very friendly and welcoming and I would certainly recommend this property to anyone I know.
The Villa is ideally situated just 5 minutes from exit 36 (St Tropez/Draguignan) on the A8 Autoroute, and only 45 minutes drive from Nice Airport. Less than 30 minutes south are the beautiful Mediterranean beaches of the Cote D'Azur, with St Maxime being the closest. Here can also be found a large variety of restaurants and bars, and access to all kinds of water sports & activities associated with beach life.
Driving about 30 minutes north will find you in the stunning region of the Gorge Du Verdon, second only to the Grand Canyon in scale and beauty. Within a 1 hour radius, you can find yourself in Cannes, Antibes, Juan les Pins, Nice and Monaco to the East, while West will lead you to Aix-en-Provence, Marseilles, Toulon. There are numerous medieval villages in the area, all offering typical Provencal charm and beauty, of course, we are in the centre of the Provence vineyards, & within a 15 minute driving radius there are too many local vineyards & wineries to mention!
Other Activities: Kayaking, Diving, Windsurfing Sailing on the coast, 25 minutes away. There is also a Water-ski tow on a local lake.
Golf: Within a 1 hour radius there are a variety of courses, with the closest being only 10 minutes drive, St Endreol Golf course is a beautiful and challenging course set in the hills at La Motte. There are 3/4 courses at the coast with stunning views over the gulf of St Tropez, and many more just inland.
