About roberta hunter

In 2004, while on a 2 week vacation into the Yucatan, we chose Xcalak as an out of the way destination to relax and enjoy snorkeling and diving, our 2 favorite activities. That was the beginning of an exciting and enriching adventure that we enjoy sharing with guests who return year after year. Two months of every year we live at the Inn and enjoy the tropical breezes and calm, clear waters within the protective reef. We love our spacious, airy, 2 bedroom suites nestled close to the gently lapping waves that are only 60 feet from our porch. We hope to share our tropical paradise with you and have taken great pleasure in detailing the rooms with local Mayan arts and textiles.

roberta hunter purchased this villa in 2004

Why roberta hunter chose Quintana Roo

We invested in this Villa because of the obvious beauty of the area and friendliness of its local people. The tranquility and its seclusion allows us the slowed down pace we need between our busy lives in the wine country of northern California. The rest and relaxation we experience while reading, snorkeling, diving and just hanging out in a swinging hammock is all the reasons why we enjoy this special retreat and hope you will too.

What makes this villa unique

Fun Things to Do - Walks on the beach, snorkeling with schools of fish along the coral banks, scuba diving the dozens of world class underwater canyons, a sports enthusiasts destination for great fishing, reading that novel that you've been dying to get to, visiting awe inspiring ruins of the proud Mayan people, eating great food, and reaquainting yourself with those you love.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for following up. We had a wonderful stay at Coral Garden. The road wasn't too bad, and our little rental car made it there just fine…albeit slowly. To answer your questions…

Yes, the unit was clean when we arrived.

We didn't have bad weather at all, and the beach was always raked and clean in the morning. We spent a lot of time out there!

Juana and Agusto really kept to themselves. They did come in and do the dishes and change out sheets and towels, and all. Their children were darling. But all in all we didn't see much of them!

Anything to make our stay more enjoyable? i don't think so! We enjoyed the security pups, the kayaks, snorkeling, and the beach. The condo was a little large for the two of us, but i can't complain about that!

My only suggestion is to clarify the driving directions…it would help to describe making your first left in town, and last left from there, follow the beach and then follow the signs to Costa Cocos, and then about 8k from there. We were really confused coming into town…maybe because the roads in town had seem the worst of the washout.

I would be happy to recommend Coral Garden Inn! We had a great time.

Thank you for all your help! we are already talking about Xcalak for next year!

PARADISE FOUND!!! Amazing location/beach and beautifully maintained comfortable accommodations

  • 5 of 5

This is our second trip to Xcalak, and first time at the Coral Garden Inn...we will be back! The house/ location/ beach was such a perfect set-up and location for our family (ages from 9 months to 70). We rented both units and everyone had plenty of space/privacy. For a group who likes to get somewhere and "just chill", the house/beach combo was great...no need to go anywhere as all your beach relaxing and water activities are literally right outside your front door. It was also an easy quick drive into town (15-20 mins) for guided excursions like fly fishing (Captain Victor was great!) and Snorkel/Bird Island tours (XTC dive center highly recommended).

The beach is literally steps out the front door and beautifully maintained. The shade palapas are great, and the shallow sandy water was great for baby to splash around in. Water shoes required to walk farther out due to some shells/coral but nothing too bad...and the water stays waist-chest deep almost all the way out to the reef which was great for everyone to enjoy as swimming is not required. We used the kayaks provided and saw Eagle Rays, a turtle, and lots of Barracuda and other fish out towards the reef. We also brought snorkel gear and enjoyed snorkeling around the coral heads and seeing SO many colorful fish! The info book in the condo has great map/explanation of snorkeling areas immediately around the house. We brought our inflatable stand-up paddleboard and it was LOVELY paddling up the coast from the house. As one of the last properties for a ways north, the seclusion and beauty of the coastline was an amazing way to spend each morning! While the home is a bit further up the beach road than some of the other VRBO's, we enjoyed the privacy of this and the water/reef area is better, in my opinion, farther North from town.

The upstairs unit enjoyed an amazing breeze day and night, and in combo with the fans the unit was always comfortable. The downstairs unit was also breezy, although on calmer nights the bedrooms were a bit stuffy due to privacy hedge in front, but the convenience of running straight out the front door and onto the beach was worth it! No stairs involved = great with a crawling baby!!! Both condos were furnished wonderfully with comfy beds, kitchens well stocked for cooking/meals, and full size appliances. The speakers for an iPod player were a nice addition! Caretakers were helpful but not intrusive, and stocking up on groceries/beer in Tulum was the way to go!

Slice of paradise!

  • 4 of 5

What an amazing spot!! Xcalak is an absolute paradise! The beach around the Coral Garden Inn (CGI) is actually the best beach along that whole stretch of coastline. There is amazing snorkelling right in front of the place, with the big barrier reef a few hundred meters off shore and numerous smaller reefs just off shore.

The beach at CGI is wonderful. Well maintained with lots of shade, and the waves gently lapping. So tranquil. Of course, this stretch of coastline is plagued with the problem common to all world's oceans - garbage. It is such a shame to see the most beautiful, pristine marine sanctuary full of plastic garbage swept down the coastline. Agosto, the caretaker at CGI, does his best to remove the garbage daily from the beach.

The house is lovely. Spacious, well stocked, colourful and comfortable. The humidity and salt are a bit hard on the house and furnishings, but the caretakers do their best to maintain it.

The caretakers, Juanita, Agosto and their beautiful friendly kids are lovely people. They don't speak any English, but I spoke a little Spanish and that really helped to bridge the gap. Their daughter, Roberta, played with our young sons and showed them how to capture small fish and build amazing sand castles.

Overall, we had a great experience at the Coral Garden Inn. Such an incredible place!!

6 Wonderful weeks at Coral Garden Inn Xcalak

  • 5 of 5

This is a dream come true vacation. A very private lovely vacation to read, write, relax and snorkel. Its a 2 bedroom Villa on a private beach road in front of the Caribbean Sea.

There are 2 Villa. The downstairs Villa has a DVD and is 90 feet from the water. Both are exactly alike and perfect. The owners are great and the caretakers very helpful. I will surely plan on returning there hopefully as soon as possible. Its a magical place with a rooftop where you can almost reach the brilliant stars in the night sky. Both Villas are equipped with everything. Kitchen was fully stocked and beds were very comfortable.

With new sheets. Lovely. I had a marvelous 6 weeks. Could of stayed another 6 weeks if time permitted.

Thank you all for a special vacation. And the best snorkeling ever.

Simply Outstanding!

  • 5 of 5

I won't repeat what all the other reviewers have said, but simply let you view my videos and judge for yourself (links at end of review). This is not touristville, but real Mexico... beautiful, warm, safe, peaceful, rejuvenating, perfect... We went bone fishing. We went snorkeling. We went kayaking. We slept in. We read books. We took naps. We ate too much!

The owners are great people, great communicators, and gave us more than promised. The caretakers were like family who knew enough to give you your space and privacy. We've been several times to Hawaii, to Florida, to Puerto Vallarta, to Cozumel, and as cliche' as it sounds, this truly was the best vacation we've ever had.

These were just shot with my phone.

Unique Escape

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Coral Garden Inn for a week with our 3 year old. It is a fantastic place to really escape from the world. It is somewhat remote so come prepared. We found this to be one of its most charming aspects. If you are looking for a place for quality family time and relaxation this is it. The house is very comfortable and well spaced from the neighbors. We never felt crowded. Also, the snorkeling and fishing were great. Finally, the caretaker Augusto, and his family, are wonderful and really helped us to enjoy our stay. Knowing a bit of spanish was a big help. If you are thinking about the Coral Garden Inn, I say go for it. We hope to return in the future.

A very relaxing stay.

  • 4 of 5

We had an awesome stay in Xcalak. It is much more remote than several of the other places we stayed. The beach is virtually your own beach! The unit is not fancy but was VERY clean and spacious for just the wife and I. The pans were in better shape than any of the other places we stayed. We REALLY appreciated that as we cooked most of our own meals. The water here is some of the prettiest we saw and the snorkeling was superb. Roberta was very communicative with us from the get go.
