Bari Sardo, known as Barì until the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy, is a small town of about 4000 inhabitants located in the central eastern part of Ogliastra. It borders the towns of Tortolì to the north, Ilbono, Loceri and Lanusei to the west, and Cardedu to the south and is about 4 kilometers from the sea. Its economy, little changed over time and still linked to agriculture and pastoralism means that the country is still surrounded by its ancient and fascinating traditions and cadenced by the pace of life of a not so distant past. Its enchanting territory, with the nature, the colors and the perfumes typical of the Mediterranean, still largely uncontaminated, rich in archaeological sites, allows the visitor to experience one of the most fascinating views of Ogliastra. Divided between the plateau of Teccu, the scenic pearl of Bari Sardo, the tower of Barì, the plateau of Su Pranu, which gives the view and the heart different points of view, the rolling hills of Pizzu and Monti and the vast Pranargia plain, offers variety of environments, colors and scents that make it the ideal place to meet and experience a truly untouched portion of nature. The coast, which stretches for about 10 kilometers, from the beautiful town of Cea, continuing in the dark cliffs of Teccu, the beautiful beach of Torre di Barì and sa Marina, and then end up in the immense beaches of Pranargia and Foddini, is composed of several types of beaches and cliffs that satisfy the tastes of all sea lovers.
The position enjoyed by Bari Sardo, central and privileged within the Ogliastra territory, ordered by nature as an amphitheater, allows those who stay there to move easily in all points of the provincial territory; Bari Sardo is configured as an ideal starting point for exploring the natural and landscape beauties and cultural specificities of which Ogliastra is very rich.
The territory of Ogliastra is located in the central eastern part of Sardinia. It faces South and East on the Tyrrhenian Sea, it borders to the North-West with the province of Nuoro and to the South-West with the province of Cagliari.
The name of the province seems to derive from the Olivastri of which the territory is rich, even if others attribute its origin to the huge monolith overlooking the sea located on the coast of Baunei and called Agugliastra (or Pedra Longa).
The Ogliastra, with its 23 small villages, is the least populated and longest-lived province in Italy, with the highest concentration of centenarians; offers unspoiled nature and a great variety of wild and wonderful landscapes. Walking short distances you can go from its enchanting and variegated coasts, bathed by a crystalline sea, to the rolling hills, covered by a thick Mediterranean scrub, up to the centuries-old forests or the majestic mountains of Gennargentu with its often snow-covered peaks.
