Porto Rafti is situated on the Rafti Bay, a bay of the Aegean Sea, on the east coast of the Attica peninsula. It is surrounded by hills, the tallest of which is Merenta, 613 m above sea level. It is 5 km south of Vravrona, 6 km east of Markopoulo and 26 km southeast of the center of Athens.
The port was a major trading place until the collapse of the Roman Empire. The names of the ancient villages were Prasiai, Steiria and Koroni. They belonged to the Pandionis phyle according to the division of Ancient Athens Democracy made by Clisthenes in the early 5th century BC. The port of Porto Rafti is no longer in use due to environmental concerns. This port was the scene of the allied troops' evacuation after the German invasion in Greece at the end of April 1941.
Porto Rafti Today
Porto Rafti is nowadays known as a famous seaside resort, as there is the municipal famous beach (Avlaki). Porto Rafti, along with the areas of Keratea and Markopoulo Koropi, has experienced large housing development after the construction carried out in the region in 2004. The problem, which both the region and the whole Mesogeia face, is the creation of an integrated sewerage and watering system. At the borders of Municipality of Markopoulo, to which Porto Rafti belongs, there is the Historic site of Vravrona. Today Porto Rafti is accessible through Attiki Odos and the nearby subway station "Koropi". In addition, a study has been submitted for expansion of suburban railway from Koropi to Lavrio, with intermediate stops in "Markopoulo", "Kalyvia" and "Keratea"
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the main day time activity is water related. Porto Rafti sports so many nice beaches. At the northern end of Porto Rafti there is Erotospilia, it tends to get crowded on weekends but it is a small cove with incredible waters and views. Many young people hang out here. About 500 meters north of Erotospilia you will find younger people sunbathing topless but this is mostly off the rugged rocks. Aulaki Beach is at the southern end and is state-owned (small fee). At Aulaki you will find a very sandy beach, shallow waters, beach chairs and showers. Between Aulaki Beach and Erotospilia you will still find beaches on the bay. These tend to get crowded on weekends as bus operators drop off Athenians seeking to escape the heat of the city.
Along the way to Aulaki Beach you will find several schools offering instruction in sailing, water skiing and other outdoor activies.
The Mare Nostrum Hotel, now converted to a Club Med resort, also offers many water sports activities.
7 kilometers north from Porto Rafti there is the coastal region of Vravrona. In addition to containing the hotel most of you will be staying at, this region contains several archeological finds. In particular there is the Temple of Artemis Vravronia and a museum next to this site.
Artemis Vravronia. In the 5th c. BC, one of the most important sanctuaries in Attica was built. It flourished on the north-west fringes of a hill dominating the plain of Vravrona. Dedicated to the great goddess of nature and protectress of children, the site, with its distinctive features, gave the goddess her epithet: Artemis Vravronia.
Vravrona Museum. The museum contains the best of the findings from the sanctuary of Artemis Vravronia and objects discovered in excavations from various sites in the Mesogaia (this region of Greece).
Directions from Athens to Porto Rafti:
Head straight for the airport. You will see signage for Markopoulo please take it (if you are instead coming from the airport, as of August, 2002 you need to take the 2nd sign for Markopoulo and not the first). Just as you are entering Markopoulo, you will see a Church and cemetery to your left and a left turn lane at the lights. Make a left here and follow the signage for Porto Rafti but one note of caution: the town of Markopoulo, likes to call Porto Rafti by another name. It is referred to as Limin (Port) Mesogeas Once you are on Porto Rafti Avenue from Markopoulo, you will take this for 1.7 kms until you encounter a split in the road. You will bear right and stay on Porto Rafti Avenue. You will take it for 4.8 kms. You will then see on your left the fast food chain: Goody’s and the Hotel Artemis. 300 meters after the hotel, you will see a split. You will turn left. You will know you have made the correct turn because at the split you will see as you turn into it (on your right side) the Supermarket GEGOS. You will be on Gregos Avenue. Take this until you see the Aegean in front of you!
By Sailboat: For those lucky enough to come sailing in, Porto Rafti offers excellent anchorage but no marina facilities. Please make sure to buy the Greek Water's Pilot Guide. Should you be in need of marina facilities, the best is due south of Porto Rafti and is located in Lavrio. You will then need to arrange for a rental car from there to head north to Porto Rafti.
Access to the resort (and the Villa) is easy via the Attica Expressway, from Athens & Airport Areas. Buses come and go, local ones as well.
