About Dru Howenstine
We have lived at Lake Don Pedro since 1989. The promise of country living brought us here from the Los Angeles area. Our son grew up climbing trees, hiking to the lake and building forts. Friends who visit us call our life style "resort living." We enjoy coffee on our deck in the morning and a glass of wine in the evening watching the sunset. Our families thought we were crazy to move here….and then they all moved here too! I like to call it the wild west. Things are different here. The hills are rich in history and gold. Notorious bandits and criminals have passed through here or stayed to here to hide from the law. Whether you choose to put your feet up and take a break from a busy life style or explore our slice of heaven, we promise you a memorable vacation.
Dru Howenstine purchased this Studio in 1995
Why Dru Howenstine chose La Grange
Why stay in an impersonal hotel or camp in a tent when you can stay in a cozy guest cabin with most of the amenities of home. Our guest house is 5 minutes from the Fleming Meadows boat ramp at Lake Don Pedro. You can ski or fish all day and then come back to the Hide Away to BBQ and relax for the evening. And you can safely park your boat right outside the guest house. Yosemite is an easy drive from here. Take a picnic, hiking boots and your camera to make your own special memories in Yosemite. Or take a day trip to the historic gold mining town of Columbia to experience life in the 1840's. Jamestown and Sonora boast historical downtowns filled with antique shops, restaurants and cultural displays. Lake Don Pedro is 2 hours from San Francisco and an hour and a half from Sacramento. Once your arrive we will share more points of interest that you may enjoy.

Home From Home
What a brilliant find, really enjoyed our stay at this cosy cabin. Everything was catered for. We used as base to go to Yosemitie and also Lake Pedro. All in all perfect thanks for finishing our holiday off with a bang!
Home away from home
The perfect place to stay to explore Yosemite NP. It took us 55 minutes to drive to the Big Oak Flat Entrance. The drive there was very scenic. Ron and Dru were perfect host and the notebook they provided had lots of helpful info. The cabin and precious secluded patio were so comfortable. The decor of the cabin was quite charming. Despite the fact there was no stove the gas grill, electric frying pan and microwave oven allowed us to cook up some delicious meals. The Kurig coffeemaker was wonderful and they supplied quite an assortment of coffees, tea and hot chocolate. We had easy access to our own washer and dryer and full size refrigerator. I can’t express enough what a great, affordable location this cabin is in for visiting Yosemite. We stayed 6 nights and drove to and explored Yosemite 5 of those days. I give “The Cabin” 5 stars and would definitely stay again. If we hadn’t already had reservations at another location to explore more of the parks in California, we would have stayed here longer. Note: We stayed at the cabin and visited Yosemite Sept. 17 - 21 and never had a long wait at the park entrance. The longest line we had at the entrance was on Saturday and there were only 3 cars in front of us. The earliest we arrived was 8 AM and the latest was 11 AM. Thank you Dru and Ron for sharing your cabin.
Was absolutely the best set up for a comfortable nights stay for multiple people. The place was an absolute delight to stay at as were the owners Dru and Ron. Thank you both for the instructions for Yosemite saved hours off out day. Will be back soon!
If you are looking for a relaxing, quiet place, look no further. Dru and Ron were wonderful hosts. They provided us with great tips and helpful information.
The house was cozy, private, clean, and had everything we needed. Would certainly go back again! Highly recommended!!
Great patio, beautiful (and long) drive to Yosemite
My sons and I enjoyed our stay at the Hideaway! Check-in was easy and our hosts made our stay very comfortable. We cooked up some amazing meals using the grill on the patio and had plenty of room for all three of us. It's a beautiful area with lots to do right there, but our focus was Yosemite, which is a beautiful (long) drive away.
Best place near Yosemite.
We love this cabin, it was neat, nice and really clean. I like the owners they are great people. The cabin looks much better than the pictures, if you are thinking of staying at the cabin I promise you will love it.
