Small cosy house, in need of some finishing touches to make it truly comfortable

  • 3 of 5

We stayed at Wild Atlantic Rest for three nights - we are very regular visitors to Dingle and know the Peninsular area extremely well. It was our first time in this particular property and there were things we did and didn't like about it.

The Good:

- Easy to find (good directions provided by YNA) and with stunning views over the Blasket Islands.

- Warm and cosy - the lower floor has underfloor heating, which was on when we arrived, so the house was very toasty (not always the case in Irish rentals!)

- A nice welcome basket - eggs, milk, bread, teabags etc.

Less good:

- Lacking in privacy - the owner lives next door (you can see his house in the photo) and is around all the time. So not a lovely rural retreat in that sense.

- The house is missing some pretty basic household equipment: in 3 days, we noted the lack of an oven glove, a bread knife (there is a knife but it's blunt) and a coffee pot. The upstairs bathroom could use a towel rail and a toilet roll holder - towels had to be draped on the floor or radiator. Curiously, the downstairs bathroom has both.

- The upstairs king size bed (which is squeezed into the tiniest of the 3 bedrooms, not sure why) either needs a new mattress or a mattress topper. Very uncomfortable and we could feel the springs poking through. We improvised and added a spare duvet below the bottom sheet.

- Lastly - the bedrooms lack mirrors! The whole place has three in total: two in the bathrooms and only one in one of the three bedrooms. Very challenging to dry your hair, get ready etc. A simple but significant oversight.

In summary: it felt as if the property had been furnished with leftover bits from other houses, with no real thought as to what was needed or what would add to a comfortable stay. I'd expect more consistency and professionalism at this price point, for a property which is professionally managed and priced as a premium offering.
