Beautiful riverside stone house in rural Asturias perfect for families

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 5 nights

About the property

3 bed/3 bath spacious house with garden, 2 terraces with stunning views.

Our beautifully restored stone house in the village of Soto de Agues makes a perfect base for holiday makers looking for rest, tranquillity, all types of outdoor activity as well as painting and photography. Restored in 2011, the house was awarded 3-star status (the highest for rural houses) in August of 2014. Backing on to the river Alba whose gentle babble will lull you to sleep, it has a first floor balcony overlooking the valley. The garden backs directly onto the river and has 2 separate terraces, perfect for family dining or reading under the shade of the climbing rose. Inside the house you will find a fully equipped modern kitchen, a separate area with washing machine and a bathroom.  2 lounge areas; one with library, wood burning stove, flat screen TV and super comfy sofa, the other one with sofa and wide screen TV (perfect for kids or cosy movie nights). Up the original staircase, we have two en suite bedrooms with built in wardrobes and flat screen TVs; one leads out onto the balcony and the other has views out onto the square. (We have 2 additional bedrooms available on request without en suite, suitable for 2 children and 2 adults). Having been a bed and breakfast, the bedrooms are decorated with simple elegance and with thought for the comfort and tranquillity of guests. Upstairs again, you will find a large, light open attic space with a table tennis table and a large selection of board games as well as maps and information on the local area.

The house is in the village of Soto de Agues which is in Parque Natural de Redes.

About Leon

We are Rachel and Leon and our 2 sons; we came to Spain in 2005 for a year to try something different and have not looked back! We bought the house after falling in love with the view from the back balcony and began renovating it in 2011.  With heavy hearts we left Asturias in 2016 to see where life takes us in Mallorca and as a result, decided to continue making our home available for holidays in a self catering capacity.

Leon purchased this house in 2008

Why Leon chose Valle del Nalón

My husband and I spent years decorating, adding touches, making the house fit our desire for a mix of modern and traditional. The thick stone walls keep it cool in summer, it has 3 spacious floors and 2 outdoor levels meaning there is plenty of space for everybody.

What makes this house unique

People who visit say that it is ‘magical’ and it’s true- there is something special about this corner of Asturias. It doesn’t have many tourists, away from the most popular route you will come across few fellow wanderers; the people of the village; neighbours, bar owners, shop keeper are friendly to a fault and will do whatever they can to make your stay special. You can swim in the river, or in the outdoor pool just down the road; there’s a football pitch and a playground and the village is, as the its tourist strapline states, ‘the land like it used to be’ : safe, inexpensive, peaceful and friendly.

there is nothing to add to the prior comments, the house, the village, the surroundings, everything will make you happy. On top of that the friendly and fast owner support must be mentioned. Thanks, Leon, we will come back!

Beautiful house in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week here in August 2017. The house is stunning with everything you could need and more. We enjoyed our morning coffee on the balcony looking out at the mountains. Bedrooms were all lovely, 2 of which have very modern ensuites. Our son appreciated the way you could change the language on the TVs to English. Kitchen was fully equipped but we also used the BBQ and ate at one of the bars in the village. Stunning walks from the door - with eagles and vultures circling above. Great outdoor pool at Rioseco and volleyball net just outside of the village. Our son put down his iPad (WiFi is available at the house) and enjoyed outdoor living. Leon and Rachel kept in touch through email and offered advice about walks etc. Javi met us at the property and told us all we needed to know (his English is very good). There is a file telling visitors everything they need to know - handy tip about daily bread delivered to the door - as well as many leaflets/books. Listening and watching the river at the end of the garden with a large glass of wine in hand - couldn't wish for more. Can't wait to return.

It cant get more perfect than this!

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived until the moment we drove away there is nothing more that we could ask for in a home or place to take a vacation week.

We traveled as a family of 5: my husband and I, 2 children ages 10 and 7 plus my mother-in-law from the US. We stayed for 6 nights.

Soto de agues the town in itself is a gem that I almost wish I could keep secret, with cobble streets, friendly neighbors, stunning views wherever your eyes rest and easy access to what seems like infinite hikes, drives, beach days, or just playing in the river and exploring the area. But what makes this rental so special is the space, the home that Leon and Rachel have created. It is a most beautifully crafted home with revelations of the old stone and wood nicely redone with modern high quality and usable appliances, cookware, furniture, lighting and plumbing. The sheets, the water pressure, the chairs on the porches, the mattresses, the bedside lights and closet spaces and towel heaters... Every last thing works well and is integrated perfectly for your comfort. You can tell that it was their home. Most rentals have the cheapest items for use but at Leon and Rachel's you feel their recent presence.

The sound of the river puts you to sleep each night and wakes you to rise in the late morning when it is customary for the town to get into motion. The only other sounds are the clanking of silverware and hushed voices from the restaurant across the creek and the baaing of the sheep that go out to pasture on the hillside above the restaurant.

Wifi worked well and there were bikes to use, there were tons of toys for the kids so they begged to get more time at home even though they loved our walks and outings as much as we did.

There was so much space and sweet spaces for everyone to be together as well as time apart if needed.

It speaks to how lovely the people of the village are as well as how well liked Rachel and Leon are in town that many people we encountered were happy to help us any way they could. In particular the people that take care of the home are just lovely. The caretaker Javier radiated warmth and respect. Mercedes who cleans is sweet and bright. Both bent over backwards to help or make things more comfortable. Leon was endlessly helpful with our arrival, then to my many questions throughout. I have never rented from a more responsive and conscientious host and staff.

note: plan to shop ahead then to cook your food as restaurants very scarce.

Gorgeous house in great rural location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this lovely house in July. There were two adults + 2 adult "children". The house is really well equipped and in a stunning location. The support service was terrific too, with good communication from Leon the owner, and a really friendly welcome from Mercedes and Javi. The kitchen is great and full of all those things you need from home that are not usually in a holiday house. The description and pictures are exactly how it is: roomy, full of character, beautiful views, good bathrooms. The terrace is wonderful for breakfast and to enjoy views and the sound of the river. There is delicious bread from the local bar each morning, nice places to eat, big smiles from the locals and really comfy beds.

We liked the area a lot. It's popular with Spanish walkers, who head up the Ruta del Alba (an amazing 14km walk to a stunning gorge) and we found lots more local walks right from the house or from Riosecco down the hill. If you are looking for a getaway with great walks and no touristy tourists, then this is it! We would definitely return for more walks, nice food and views. Can't recommend the house and the owners enough!
