We are a family of three very hard working women. There is my mother Janet, my daughter Fern and myself who run our holiday let business here in Shropshire. My daughter has a degree in English Literature and is currently training to be a barrister, while working full time as a hotel manager in an old country Manor hotel in Ludlow. I am an accountant and am lucky enough to work in a beautiful location in Clun. Having grown up in Yorkshire, the beauty of the Shropshire Hills was what I had always dreamed of and when we first saw Bowketts Wood with its stunning panoramic views, woodlands and grounds, I knew that it would be my forever family home. My children have both had a lovely and safe upbringing surrounded by nature and they have come to love and appreciate the Shropshire countryside as much as I have.
Why Owner chose Ludlow

What makes this Cabin unique
The beautiful views of over six counties are absolutely breathtaking. Based on a sight of outstanding natural beauty and special scientific interest, our garden and grounds are home to over sixty types of rare and exotic plants and flowers, as well as a host of wildlife including foxes, badgers and deer. We are also in a perfect location for bird watching and have our own woodland buzzard who often swoops down whilst driving up the drive, In the Summer our woodland is covered in a blanket of bluebells and the whole place just comes to life. Had a lovely time the only downside to it was that the bathroom was cold and felt damp but a lovely lodge
Lovely short break, view from cabin could have been better but a short walk will give you views to die for. Our dog loved it the woods are perfect for walking in if a little steep in places..
A quiet retreat, generally well kept but with some teething problems
A peaceful and well furnished chalet with a very comfortable bed. Accommodation is ideal for two people. Stay somewhat overshadowed by an unlucky mix of appliance malfunctions including shower, hob and wifi that I am sure will be rectified.
It was fantastic beautiful scenery nice and tranquil good place to relax
The property was cosy enjoyed the log fire had all the necessities you need e.g. kitchen bathroom lounge beautifully set within the cabin definitely going back in May
Definitely not a place to stay in winter
The furnishings etc. are very nice but the lodge itself was not of the same standard. We had to leave a day early as the water pipes froze and we did not have any water. The owner provided a container to fill from their outside tap blaming the water authority but clearly the problem was that the pipes to the lodge were not sufficiently insulated. We paid for logs which would not light so after a very cold first night, we ended up buying our own logs, kindling and lighters which worked perfectly. This property is a summer stay holiday but definitely not a winter one.
After just receiving an excellence award for Rowan Lodge we are disappointed with this review and feel we must respond to some of the comments made in it. We have been letting rowan lodge for 3 years and have never had an issue with water supply. These guests arrived at the beginning of some of the worst weather this country has seen for a decade and as a result we had water supply issues due to freezing pipes and burst mains. All of our neighbours were affected, as well as ourselves and the guests were made aware of this. We could do absolutely nothing about this and at 6am as soon as these guests rang to report the problem we called the local supplier who told us there had been issues and that it was not likely to be fixed soon as there were continuing problems all over our locality due to the extreme weather. We supplied the guests with a water tank to use which was all that we could possibly do in this situation. We had other guests staying in 2 different properties who were very understanding of the situation considering it was a global problem and not just us and left us fantastic reviews which you can see on our site. So to say that you couldn’t stay in Rowan Lodge in winter is simply not true and I would urge guests to seek out our reviews for our guests who have stayed in winter periods to see for themselves.
We are also a little confused about the complaint about the wood not burning as this wood is 3 year seasoned wood and is supplied to all of our guests in all of our properties who have never had an issue with burning it. The guests never contacted us regarding this problem during their stay. We can only assume that the guests were not lighting the wood burner correctly. Also when we cleaned the lodge all of the wood had been used up so we can’t understand the comment that they didn’t use it and had to buy their own.
Unfortunately these guests came at a time of global weather extremeties which was completely beyond our control and while we understand their frustration we are disappointed at their clear lack of understanding with the situation and feel that some of their comments reflect this frustration and are neither fair nor true.
We encourage guests to seek out our other fantastic reviews online and judge for themselves.
Rowan Lodge - a very special place
We spent a wonderful few days in this lodge set in acres of gorgeous woodland which we and our dog enjoyed investigating. The lodge is thoughtfully furnished and well equipped with robes, big fluffy towels and lovely toiletries. A few minor hiccups were quickly sorted by Fern and we enjoyed cosy evenings in front of the wood burning stove. Rowan Lodge is perfectly located for those wishing to explore Ludlow and the surrounding area.
